00:00 Intro
01:40 Thermal Switch
03:55 Fan control module
06:00 Econ Button on AC
07:00 Coolant temp sensor
09:35 Fuse box on battery
11:05 Fans
13:10 A/c system
15:05 After Run / Aux pump
Thermal switch ( may vary model to model)
Mounted in the radiator, 3 pin switches than operates based on heat.
Controls low and fast speeds, believe to operate at 95 deg & 102 deg.
You can unplug the switch and check it by finding the live and then shorting that with the 2 remaining pins separately.
Low speed fans should run with Ign OFF, High speed require Ign ON.
This will confirm if it is the switch at fault or not.
Coolant Fan control module ( may vary model to model)
Mounted underneath the battery, has 2 plugs
For the AC they are controlled by the fan control module.
With the AC off (Econ On) the fans won’t run until triggered by the thermal switch on the rad.
Low speed are switched purely by stage 1 if that switch.
High speed are switched by a relay in the fan control module when triggered by stage 2 of the thermal switch.
Coolant temp sensor ( may vary model to model)
Located to right hand side of engine, measures the coolant temp twice, once for heater controls and once for dash pods, so these should be within 1-2 degrees of each other. Remember the dash pod is weighted so 80-99 will always sit solidly at 90.
If needs replacing always replace seal and always buy genuine. Have seen many aftermarket brands fail.
If you have vcds or like you can check measure blocks for coolant temp.
( IF YOU HAVE ACCESS TO A THERMAL CAMERA THAT HELPS TOO )
Fuse box on battery (middle big one, first green one)
Notorious for looking ok but not passing current, visually check, pull the green fuse out and inspect then push back in and make sure seated well.
If your car is also only running the fast speed this can also get extremely hot as they are having to work harder than normal.
Large bolt down - Cooling fans and control module
Push in green - cooling fans
Cooling fans, 2 speeds, slow speed is resistors ( may vary model to model)
Both fans should always run together, there are 2 running speeds,
Slow speed is almost silent and unless your standing next to them you probably won’t hear them.
High speed is loud, sounds like a turbine starting up haha
The slow speed should always run when a/c is on regardless of temp, if this does not but your a/c is working well its likely your slow speed resistors have failed. In turn if your car is getting to 100 deg on 49c or dash then again same issue.
Fan running when A/C is on
ECON BUTTON- When switched, A/C Compressor is switched off, but operation is otherwise automatic.
So, if light on econ is on, you’re a/c is not.
You may not have an issue with your fans it could well be an issue with you’re a/c.
If you’re a/c is low or excessively filled with refrigerant then it will not work, if you have a leek, if the compressor has failed, a leak in the system or your pressure sensor has failed all these will stop operation of the ac.
When turning your climate control on and onto auto you should rear the revs dropped for a second as the ac compressor takes a good current draw.
After run pump ( not 100% relevant but similar subject) ( may vary model to model)
It should run for 10 mins each and every time the ignition has been on and turned off.
Cools the turbo down to help reduce the risk of heat damage / cracks like these cars are well known for!!
That’s what made me swap mine out last year, on a few occasions I could hear the pump not operating.
They’re not noisy, but loud enough to hear quite distinctly when standing next to the bonnet.

Thanks for a really comprehensive video. Really handy. CAn you give any more detail on the running of the fan control module? I’ve been told the relay that switches on/off the magnetic clutch on the aircon compressor is contained in the unit. At what stage does it switch on during the aircon startup? Reason being my compressor clutch is not being engaged and I’m not seeing any difference (in terms of voltage) to the compressor even if the aircon is on. My car has a failed slow speed fan on the larger of the 2 fans (right hand fan nearest the battery) which I will replace but the left smaller fan (furthest from the battery) does spin at the slower speed shortly after the aircon is switched on… but I’m not seeing the compressor clutch engage. What are the steps the car goes thru to start the AC? Is there a way to test the ac high pressure switch to confirm there is enough pressure in the system to switch the compressor on… Where is he AC high pressure switch and what role does the FCM take in the AC startup? Are there any other modules to check as part of the AC startup/running steps? Thanks again for your video. It’s helped me lots.

Just a follow up, I found the that the larger fan would not power up at slow or high speed. Removed the fan from the car and removed the back cover on the fan motor. Found one of the motor brushes was stuck in the holder. I freed up the brush, cleaned the commutator & reassembled. Working great. Thanks for the great videos and resources 👍

My car has been overheating, and even when I turn on the air conditioning, the fans don't spin at any speed. I turn off the car, then turn it back on, and the fans start working again. I've replaced the fuse box above the battery, 2 temperature sensors, the thermostat, the radiator thermo-switch, fuse box over battery and the relay box under the battery, but the same issue persists. Sometimes the fans work fine at both speeds, and other times they don't work at all. If I bridge the connector on the thermo-switch, both speeds work, at least when I tried. Any help? Thank you very much.

Great video, very informative. My fans are currently not spinning (this is a mk1 Leon 1.8T, not a TT but figured this is basically the same). I've already replaced pretty much all of this stuff and they still do not work. Stuff replaced with new parts: -both fans -switch in the radiator -temp sensor on the side of the engine -module underneath battery -fuses on top of battery are all okay Have tried to connect the fans directly as described and then both speeds do work. Temperature on the dash goes up to 90 normally and car does not overheat (so far). All this is with ignoring the A/C (this car has the older knobs, not the climate control so there is no "econ") as there seems to be some damage to the condenser so this system is currently not in use. Any ideas what else I can try/check? Unfortunately I'm a beginner and have exhausted my limited knowledge/experience haha

If your car isn’t going past 95 then your fans won’t need to come on as there is no reason for them to. You can leave it sat there on idle and eventually the car should creep past 95 degrees and they should kick in but besides that I wouldn’t worry if your not seeing over heating issues. Both the dashboard cluster and the heater controls measure the temperature from the same place, the temp sensor on the passenger side of the engine. If your fans are not coming on when the car gets hot and the Aircon is off it is likely that the thermal switch in your radiator is failing or failed, this can be proved by removing it and then sorting out the two pins and see if the fans come on if they do then is the switch if they do not then he could be the control unit underneath the battery

I did a Jumper as well in both configurations on the Harness connection and only One way works by firing up both fans with the A/C On or Off. The Module is New and the heat sensor plugs are newer.

Great video! I wonder if you could help me solve my 2003 1.8T VW Golf overheating problem. It's driving me crazy. When I get stuck in a long traffic jam it starts overheating. I think the fans high speed is not working at that point. Fortunately I get the temperature back to 90º quickly from 110 ºC by connecting AC. Thermostat and pump seems to be fine as pipes from thermostat (lower) and from radiator (top) get very hot both, and it keeps 90º in normal driving. I´ve checked both fans turn on (low speed) by themself at iddle and temperature stays at 90º, I also triggered the fans manually bridging the radiator thermo-switch connector. Both fans work in low and high speed. What's the faulty component responsible for this, green temperature sensor, fan control module, fuses? Thank you for your time helping us.

Mine isn’t overheating my issue is after every single journey my cooling fan is coming on for a couple minutes- it’s not loud but it’s there and it’s really annoying 😢plenty of coolant and can’t see any leaks but I see at end of video you say this is normal as some people tell me it’s not? But it does come on after every drive- it’s 2.0 TDI

Impeccable timing, I was just messing with them earlier, fuse s180 on top of the battery was blown as soon as I was about to replace it blown straight away and blew 3 more, what could it be? It is not melted or anything car gets passed 90°c if idling for a while

Usually a short, one of the fans could be failed, a cable could be down to earth, broken wires. my bets are on the fans being failed, unplug the fans one by one and try another fuse

@@TheParrottBros they do work with AC on, I forgot to mention I wired in a manual switch tapped into the radiator temperature sensor, worked the charm for a month then the inline fuse that is on the switch blew, 30 amp one as well, I was taking power from the power supply under the dash, I am not sure if the switch has died, I am going to do the resistor mod soon, as it is driving me crazy, I have been watching the channel for just over a year keep up the good work🔝

Hey, no MK1 has such modern features. At best you’ll get a CD player or disc changer, anything else will be aftermarket. Can be added to some in place of the disc changer

Likely issue, fan has failed / gone short inside and is causing fuse to blow, that or a sensor has gone short, or you have a wiring issue. unplug one fan and replace the fuse, see what happens if blows plug back in and unplug other fan, easiest way to rule that out
