How to Fall on a Snowboard and PREVENT INJURY

Today we discuss some strategies on how to fall well on a snowboard to prevent injuries to your wrists/ elbows/ shoulders/ clavicle/ hips/ knees/ etc. By no means is there one way to do this, but this is my professional opinion as a physical therapist and snowboarder.

Wonderful video! I really messed up my shoulders recently. Night time riding and a jump, and when I got over the jump I realized there was zero lighting where you should land. So I landed blindly which kinda made it impossible to prep for the fall. Anyway I would like to add one thought, and that is to use a back protector. Nothing is more important to protect than our spine and head. The spine can rarely be fixed by surgery if injured. I fully agree with tucking in and rolling backwards on the back, but i really recommend having a proper back protector (preferably level 2 d3o or something) then! Happy riding!

Totally agree with you that our spine and head are our most precious assets!

I searched for this and found very few videos, and this one had clearest information and spot on. Not sure why it has so low views. I have a personal question too, 3 years back I broke my humerus bone in half while ice skating. I slipped and kept my left arm back to stop the fall, it happen instinctively and before I know what happened I was on ice with broken arm. I want to try snowboarding but am really scared, don't wanna end up wasting 6 months recovering. Also I have a titanium rod in my arm, I'm wondering is it too risky to try snowboarding.

Thanks for the positive feedback! Sorry to hear about your injury. To be completely honest, I would need a lot more information on your injury/ rehabilitation/ current activity levels. You're at a point where your bone soft tissues has healed and are arguably stronger than before. You have a titanium rod inserted inside, that things no breaking (Although its not impossible). The fear factor is a HUGE hurdle to get over but take it in small steps.

Just found this video after breaking my wrist my second time snowboarding yesterday lol. Hopefully it’s a quick heal. Mine was from the heel and had done nothing different for the whole day I don’t think. What’s your opinion on wrist guards or other ‘armor’ to prevent injuries.

I’m sorry to hear that! I am a huge advocate for wrist guards and wear them myself. I also wear cheap padded shorts for sacrum protection just in case. It’s minimal and easy to do!

@@MobilityDuo Same to me! Plus I also use knees protector, I bought telekneesis-kneepads from BD and they saved my life this week. Really

What about falling from landing jumps or boxes when you’re not just falling from ground level? Same thing??

So there's only so much you can do when you're falling from an increased height but essentially yes! Falling 'well' takes practice so start on ground level first.
