How To Fake Your Way Through A Jam Session

As a guitar player, nothing beats jamming with another musician. The problem is that it can be kind of hard to get into. Not to mention it’s intimidating. And if you don’t have any songs in common, you aren’t going to get very far.
Well luckily, there are some easy techniques you can use to play along to just about any chord progression out there. There’s this magical scale that you’ve probably heard whispers of called the pentatonic scale. This scale is kind of like a secret weapon that you can pull out whenever you’re unsure of what to play.

About Ayla Tesler-Mabe:
Ayla has been making waves in the world of guitar playing as a professional guitarist, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and composer, since the early age of 14. After only been playing for two years, her first KZread video (a rendition of John Mayall’s “Hideaway”) put her on the map and kickstarted her music career. She has since been featured in Rolling Stone magazine, become a member of the Ernie Ball and Fender family of artists, and earned various Berklee College of Music scholarships. Musically, Ayla finds great pleasure in exploring the numerous avenues available to her through various styles of music, as seen through her work with Calpurnia and Ludic.

This is for sure in the top 3 guitar channels in KZread. I've been playing for over 10 years, and I've seen tons of videos about pentatonic scales. I tell you this is the best. Our jam group got asked to play at customer appreciation day at a local music store this Saturday. This is the first time I will play lead guitar in front of strangers. Big step for me, since I have only been playing guitar 4 years. We will be jamming over “While my guitar gently weeps”. We have been practicing this for weeks (I’m pretty much a beginner). Found this video when looking up surviving a first jam session. I’m a bit nervous, but I think the small amount of pressure of playing live (even though it’s 1 song in front of a friendly crowd), I think this will be good for me. I think that’s my long term goal (playing live), so I’m treating this as a first recital.

I thought to myself back then, how is that even possible. Since learning on guitar, I found that was mostly true. Of course, all his bends, and vibratos stretch those five notes a bit.
