8 Steps To Understand Music Theory | Guitar Lesson

Music theory is one of those topics many guitar players avoid. Guitarists are lucky because we have so many great tools out there that can help us to get around ever learning it. But in the long run, there are some essential concepts that can have a massive impact on your playing. In this video, we’ll be teaching those key concepts.
Each one of these steps will build off of the previous ones. So feel free to pause the video and make sure you completely understand everything before moving to the next step. We’ll start off by learning about pitch within an octave. From there, we’ll learn about half-steps and whole-steps. After that, we’ll go through many more music theory concepts, and by the end of the lesson, you’ll fully understand how keys work and how to find the chords within them.
Spend some time each day working on these important music theory concepts. Don’t worry about working on everything at once. Start with just a few, and as you master them you can move on to later steps. Be sure to download the PDF cheat sheet as well.

So I play for 57 years. 10 yrs school lessons, 2 yrs college lessons Theory. At 50 I am diagnosed with a learning disorder. I am building my own channel to drag myself kicking and screaming with a smile and a tear through music theory in front of the world. Today, ...you helped. I will like, suscribe and stay in touch, not plagiarize you or any other of the diverse sources and methods I must employ to drive the theory home to pragmatic daily use in composition and performance. Sincerely, Thanks. I am 68 and grateful.

Hi , I learnt the guitar when I was 6 yrs after being inspired by my dad who was a guitarist. At that age, learning all this theory made me overwhelmed that I begun to hate it and I quit holding a six string in my life again. My dad passed away in 2016, I took his guitar which was beginning to rust and decided to play instead. I didn't go for classes this time, instead my brother taught me a few chords. Over 6 years of playing I felt a need of learning some basics, which you did. My guitar teacher told me these things when I was 6 years old, which made less sense to me then. But today, your video is ringing bells in my head. With more clarity and understanding, I'm in a pursuit to get a stronghold with theory as well as playing. Thank you very much:)

I’m not musically gifted but I’m hard headed and love to practice . I love the grind, after about a year and a half I’m starting to get kind compliments on my playing from people. What a compliment. I just love to play and always try to learn something new. I may not learn it all perfectly but I’m a little bit better if I get just attain more knowledge. The key is to practice, try to always learn and remember to have fun.

Really excellent explanation of basic music theory. When I was a kid, 10 thru 17 years old, I played Trombone in school band. We learned how to read music (in my case bass clef), and how to play the notes were located on our instruments; but I don’t recall learning any music theory. Years later, I became more interested in theory, as I’ve also played guitar since I was 10. You steps 1 thru 7 make perfect sense to me, but step 8 (majors and minors) is where I start to get lost. Thanks for you video tutorial. I’ll definitely be checking out more of your stuff.

This is a the best video for anyone trying to be self taught. We all learn the best by doing, not by hearing the best. This video gives you the tools to be able to do that in a musical context, usually it’s so alien to beginners. The more theory I learn the more I realize music is basically like learning a new language. Or more like learning a new level of advanced calculus in a new language lol.

Wow! You are a great teacher. I am putting music theory pieces together by watching different videos on theory (lots of them), seeing the logic now, & simplicity, if well laid out and well explained. Your presentations are the dream. Condensed, logical and easy to follow. What you explain in the very short span of this video (16m) would take someone watching other sources four or five hours to gather - if not more. I can't wait to see what you have on triads, the circle of fifths, fretboard theory and layout, and all the rest of the awesome stuff that I do not even know you might be willing to share and teach. Thank you for the patience and for humanizing guitar theory. Yeah, some of us have a hard time learning if they don't understand the formulas, by being told "that is how you play a C because that is just how it is". I am one, and LOVE theory. You are our hero. Keep it up please. You bring value to the art and a contribution to the arts and humanity.

This is the most amazing video I have seen on music theory! Most of the other videos I have watched only built more confusion.
