How To EXPLOIT Loose Poker Players Preflop

Ойын-сауық

Upswing Poker's newest coach, high stakes pro Uri Peleg, walks you through the preflop action of a hand from the new season of High Stakes Poker featuring Daniel Negreanu. He uses the hand as a jumping-off point to demonstrate how to come up with winning exploitative adjustments on the fly versus loose preflop players.

    Just a heads up, but you did a video on a preflop decision without actually getting the preflop action correct. Phil Ivey posted the BB and a dead SB behind the button, hence the 4x open with 4 total bbs in the pot.

    That explains the random 4x! Thanks for letting us know. The general concept Uri explains (treating a loose player like they opened from 0.5-1 position later) is still a useful one, but we'll be sure to needle our new coach for getting the action wrong in his Upswing debut.

    Is the structure 200\400 + BB ante 400? Ivey posted 1k? Because pot shows $2k in the video before Daniel opens.

    @@RunItTw1ce4858 Yes, it looks like Ivey came back after missing the blinds and posted blinds+ante for 1000$, and the structure is 200/400 with 400$ ante. As Daniel pointed out I missed Ivey's post when doing the analysis and his open is actually perfectly fine.

    I don't see an issue with opening "too wide" if opponents aren't adjusting correctly, namely if they're not 3-betting much. If they're just calling wider and don't check raise much, Daniel isn't out of line. Of course I haven't seen this game, but only Durr 3 bets much from what I've seen.

    The general message of the video seems pretty decent, however if you dig into this just a little bit, I think we start to see some pretty big holes. First, from what I gathered, Uri is referencing a fairly minor mistake by Daniel. Even when extrapolating a range for this observation, we're still left with a minor mistake at best, and have relatively low confidence in the observation. Next, Uri is pretty vague in regards to who should attempt to counter this observation. He says "you", but in which position are you? For example, if you're next to act after Daniel opens, how far should you stray in attempt to exploit this, especially given my first point? While I understand that exploitation has to begin somewhere, this doesn't seem like the spot given the uncertainty and severity of the mistake. Obviously, if you input this into a solver, it will make many adjustments, but it has the luxury of being omniscient of it's opponent's range/frequencies where us humans do not, especially in a live setting. My guess is that you'll naturally exploit Daniel in this spot without making any conscious adjustments at all.

  • @shavuri

    @shavuri

    I can see why you think this... but if we see a hand at showdown, even though it's just one "observation" it's actually a fairly strong data-point. It's still always best to have more before making big deviations however as you pointed out, and people differ in how quickly they want to adjust. I'm always on the fast to adjust side because you never know how long you're going to have to play with each player, and if you wait for too much "proof" you might never get a chance. Regarding how to counter - what I explained in the video is that you treat the opener as though he's about one position looser than he actually is. This should actually cover what you do from any position against him - whether your'e one behind or in the blinds. I hope this helps to clarify the video's message.

    This makes sense, though it leaves me a bit confused. It's often said you beat loose players by being tighter and tight players by being looser. So why start loosening vs loose players?

    If he's raising Q5s+ there and maybe Q9o, flatting QJo is gonna print $ in position - assuming typical live non-3bettors behind. ESPECIALLY if there's a for fun player in the blinds. Maybe QTo to 3b range

    Turns out DNegs' open isn't a mistake because there is 2.5bb in extra dead money posted by Phil Ivey in the CO. That makes Hultman's call pretty reasonable as well. Uri's advice in the video is good, but not applicable to this specific preflop hand.
