["How To" Episode 3] CUSTOMIZING 1/6 SCALE FIGURES--LESSON 1: Choosing Heads, Necks, Bodies

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This "how to" video is my first lesson which describes the different types of 1/6 scale heads, neck attachments, and bodies to give you a basic working knowledge on how to customize 1/6 scale figures. I show you in this video how to change a head for a U.S. army paratrooper I customized a number of years ago. The high end bodies are TBLeague (Phicen Limited) bodies. The universal bodies are Lmzauet MX02-A and B bodies (muscular male, different shades of skin). These bodies have great articulation as well. The muscular body with stiffer joints is the Emulated figure produced by ZC Toys. Here you trade flexibility for a much more improved muscular look (upper body).

I'm so glad!!! You made my day!!! It took some time for me to figure things out. Now I'm trying to figure out this one head I received recently. It was advertised as 1/6th scale, but it looks too big for 1/6 scale, and it does not look good on a 1/6th scale body. It definitely is not 1/4 scale. I'm upset that I spent good money on a good looking sculpt that really won't fit on anything. I can only hope that is a one off. Hope you have fun customizing!!!

This was utterly fascinating, informative, and helpful. I am so glad this video popped up in my random recommendations because you are a hidden gem. Everything I've wanted to learn about sixth scale figures but none of the more popular channels covered, is here. I really like how you present the videos, talking clearly and particularly how you layout the figures on the table and then go into depth about each facet. For example when talking about heads you showed the different types, those with a neck and those without, and even deeper, you showed inside the neck to point out some have a guide, some do not. I've never seen anybody else explain things so well. Normally they just say "and you pop the head on" and you just see them force it down and that's it. I genuinely found everything you had to say truly interesting. I have so many questions but am going to watch your entire back catalogue of videos in order to see if I can find answers there before I trouble and bother you directly. A quick scan of the titles didn't show one particularly about my main question so I'll ask here and please forgive me if you've covered it already. You seem to buy heads that are already made. Do you ever get a sculptor to make you a specific likeness of an actor/actress? I am very new to sixth scale collecting. 10 years ago I saw a figure that utterly captivated me; I longed to own it but family and life always found a more pressing use for the money. Over all those years I would regularly seek out photos of the figure and found that my desire to own it was still as strong and powerful as ever. Recently my wife finally managed to convince me to buy the figure so I did. Hot Toys MMS158 Amber from Sucker Punch. I loved her so much that I sought out her companion piece MMS157 Babydoll. That figure came with mold issues on her clothing (a question for another time) but it makes me so happy to see them both together. However, sadly Hot Toys never made the other three characters from the film (Sweet Pea, Rocket and Blondie). Realisation slowly dawned that to complete the set I'd need to get the final three characters custom made. I expect that to be very expensive indeed, but am more than willing to do this, and think that your channel is going to give me most of the information I need about things like bodies, clothing and accessories. It's the head sculpts that baffle and concern me the most. I believe I'd need to find a good sculptor to make them, then an artist to paint them? Please, if there is any advice or tips you can give, or people you can recommend, I would be truly grateful. Thank you for taking the time to make and share these incredible videos.

I started off very poorly with the videos, so if you go back and look at the earlier videos, just know I wish I could do them all over, but I cannot. (smile) I cannot make heads myself. I am not gifted in this domain nor am I gifted with painting heads. There is a seller from Spain who makes heads that are obviously not available "anywhere" else that I am aware of currently. He goes by the name enrive and his store is called Custom Model Depot 1/6 on eBay. I don't recall seeing the heads you noted above, but I wasn't looking for them. I know of the figures you are speaking of in that I wanted them also at one time, but had to be very selective way back when . . . I don't know if the seller from Spain takes requests to make other heads, but he has tons of unpainted heads available. I hope this gets you to his store on eBay: www.ebay.com/str/custommodeldepot16?_trksid=p4429486.m3561.l2563. I purchased a few heads after I found out that snyderman31 would paint them for me. I just saw that he will do a custom heads now, and I am elated. I have asked him in the past, and he eluded he might be willing. I'm glad you asked the question. I now know the service is available. Here is snyderman31's URL: www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?item=125555091150&rt=nc&_trksid=p4429486.m3561.l2562&_ssn=snyderman31. Here is his URL for a custom head: www.ebay.com/itm/115923678687?hash=item1afd96f5df:g:OcEAAOSw259k1rHk. I wanted (and still want) an Eartha Kitt Catwoman for Batman and Robin, and I went to UnleashedViper Commissions, but it was going to cost a small fortune. This seller suggested that I look for several people who would be willing to pitch in for the same figure to help ease the cost. Once something is up and running, I am sure the costs are much more reasonable, but I did not research this further. Here is their Facebook page. facebook.com/UnleashedViper.Commissions. They do excellent work by the way. However, if snyderman31 is offering $500 for head commissions, that is probably where I will go if I need a unique head unless UnleashedViper Commissions already has it and is selling it. Regarding mold, I've never had to deal with it, but I did just now see Baby Doll's clothing up for sale minus one shoe. It is here: www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1313&_nkw=1%2F6+sucker+punch&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_odkw=1%2F6+robert+redford&_osacat=0. I hope that helps. I did receive a head the other day that baffled me. It was larger than the typical head but listed as 1/6th. Now I am discovering that some places are making larger 1/6 heads and bodies. That is an alarming trend, and I will have to check from this point on to make sure the head will fit a MX02-A or MX02-B body or if I will need a larger CooModel body. Frankly, I don't see the need to make 1/6th scale bodies larger. Sigh. They are numbered as follows: BD001, BD002, BD003, BD004, BD005, BD006, BD007, BD008, BD009, and BD010. They do not appear to be universal (that's what I call it anyway)--that is, you get one neck only. In addition, some numbers are one shade and others are another shade and some are narrow and some are more muscular. I love that the MX02-A and MX02-B bodies come with two necks and A or B represents simply a different color tone. The problem with larger bodies (in my mind) is clothing. This will get really complicated if this new size takes off. Anyway, thank you for the questions. I hope the answers help!!! I subscribed to your channel by the way. :-)

We're still trying to find our way, but I really really REALLY love customizing figures. It is like a journey . . . The first question is, "What do I want to do?" The second question is, "Can I do it?" That is, do I think I can find the pieces that will make it work or can I just make the pieces. That is the most important question. In the end, I have to love the figure because to me it is a piece of art. That's why I will probably never stop changing head sculpts to my figures. Thank you again for your kind words.

Sometimes it is a crap shoot to be honest. Sometimes the pants aren't long enough or the shirt is way too tight on the muscular bodies especially. You need to try to find a lean or slim TBLeague or Phicen body, but even then it can be a process that does or does not work. Here's a chart that can help!!! www.moviefigures.co.uk/blogs/news/phicen-tbleague-action-figure-body-comparison-chart If you really want to dress a muscular TBLeague/Phicen male body, then consult some of the forums out there to get better guidance than I can give. I know if I am going to use a muscular body, I'm going to try to get clothes that say they are made for more muscular bodies. You can find this type of clothing on eBay now, but it will come from China and take a while to get to you. It won't be cheap either. :-( I can't tell you stuff I've bought that doesn't fit perfectly. I have to improvise then. Sigh.

I think this is what you said . . . Awesome!..I want to buy a 9.25 inch male body I found on eBay under 1/6 scale bodies from China to use as a driver for a 1/10 RC truck. Will any 1/6 head be alright for that height body? In general, I think it is safe to say that a 9.25 inch male body is small . . . even Dragon bodies can sometimes be smaller than the 1/6 scale heads they are making today and these bodies are much taller than 9.25 inches. They are like Mini-Times bodies . . . They work with Dragon heads, but they sometimes don't seem to fit the right proportions with most of the newer heads. Today, I showed Gal Gadot using two different bodies. I opted to go with the larger TBLeague body because the other 1/6 scale body is just too small with her head. The more I learn, the more I understand I still need to keep growing with my knowledge base. I should have just said straight out . . . it won't likely work. I've learned over the last few months how unforgiving slight differences are in terms of body height . . . with 9.25 inches, that would be a deficit that would be hard to make up. If it was sitting in a truck, and you had larger clothes on it, you might be able to get away with it, but my guess is you would have to buff the clothing out with cotton or something else to hide the deficits. I hope this helps!!!

Bruce Lee was a true icon who, in my mind, was the first one who created mixed martial arts. If one can find a very flexible body . . . such a body would do justice to Bruce Lee. A Phicen body would work, but the bad thing about Phicen bodies are the costs. Still, a narrow Phicen body (not overly muscular like Arnold Schwarzenegger) would be great! I buy all hot toys figures or sideshow collectibles and they all have heads that have no neck joints and pivot on a ball joint, I never take their heads off their bodies to swap them out as they have custom outfits per figure, I do have the TTM-19 body that you have the Jake Gyllenhaal head for and I really like him for a fashion figure he can wear just about everything he's got the slim built muscular body, I did buy a Phicen body that I was going to use although I found that the silicone bodies are too difficult to put clothes on and the silicone splits at the joints. My hot toys figures have a lot of articulation and I have many of them from Star Warsbto marvel figures and they all stay dressed in their original bodies, I have 2 figures that I change clothes on that live in a three shelf cabinet that each shelf is decorated and furnished with 1/6th scale furniture. One floor is the bedroom and office one floor is the living room and dining room and the lower floor is the mechanics workshop the cabinet has glass doors to keep it dust free and I spent a lot of time and money decorating the rooms with perfect scale items. In the bedroom their is a large wardrobe that is open that has drawers on one side and a hanging clothes bar with shoe racks on the other side, my figure is posed looking into the closer which is filled with his outfits I take a lot of pictures of him in different outfits and he has a lot of jewelry and accessories he also has a motorcycle and a Hummer that he can drive and be posed in. I belong to two 6th scale collector groups on Facebook the sixth scale figure collector group and the Mos Eisly star wars 6th scale figure collectors group. I have my emphasis on Star Wars collectible figures and so they take up the most space and there are two long shelves in my office where they all pose as well as across the top of three bookcases I only have two female figures, Princess Leia from the empire strikes back and golden armour wonder woman who is still in her shipping box. I have a number of other porcelein dolls of different sizes that are Al, women and a large Bud male body doll that is dolfie size which I had custom made from South Korea I also have a number of 1/12 scale dolls that live in a very large Victorian three story Queen Anne house that I started collecting for when I was in high school and it is extremely realistic with thousands of dollars worth of museum quality miniatures and the whole house is electrified and quite elaborate. I enjoyed watching you explain all the different neck styles which I had to learn about the hard way luckily when I bought my two dolls that I dress up they had heads on them and I haven't needed to change them out.

It sounds like you have really thought of everything. Switching dioramas out for new ones can be fun too. :-) Yes, those Phicen bodies can be tricky . . . getting clothes on them can be frustrating at times. Sometimes baby powder works, but the worst thing is when clothing stains something. I hate that the most. I had one Phicen body where that happened. I need to show folks how to get stains out of a silicone body because those bodies are definitely more expensive. Thanks for sharing!!! :-)

    9 ай бұрын

Most of the time not long at all . . . 5-10 seconds. If that doesn't work, I make the water hotter. Sometimes I've used even boiling water. Microwaves are wonderful!!! :-) The only time this does not work is if you are working with a much older body that has a neck that is not really designed to be disassembled. In those cases, the neck piece will be broken when it comes off. There will be a spring and other piece there that I've never taken off. I just hot glue it back together and save it for a head that will fit on it or you rig something together that works. That is rarely though . . . especially with the newer bodies. :-) Have fun customizing and have a great one today!!!

That's a good question. To be honest, I don't know, but I should try it. I just don't have a head sculpt with blond hair to test it on. The trick is not getting the dye on the head sculpt itself--the face, the ears, etc. One question is, "How long do you leave the dye on for the color you want?" I don't know the answer. There are so many things that could go wrong I am thinking with dye. You could paint the hair. Here you would get immediate results, but again, you have to be careful not to get paint on the face or ears. You could try re-rooting the hair with hair that is a darker color. There are KZread videos on rooting hair. I rooted a Loki figure once with black hair. You start at the bottom of the head (where the hair ends) and glue on a line of hair little by little straight across. You then go up further and put in a line of hair little by little above the first layer and so on. It actually came out pretty good. I should do that to another figure as a how to video!!! The other option is buying a wig, but you would have to take the rooted hair off. I suppose it's a learning process to see what works--basically experimenting until you find the best way to do something. However, I would experiment on a head I don't really care about losing though. :-)

Hello . . . I get clothes from eBay (but they are typically really long waits) so I prefer Monkey Depot, Rattlesnake Toys, Toy Anxiety, One Sixth Outfitters, Zhukov's Attic, and World of One Sixth. I hope this helps!!! :-)

Years ago we thought Ken and Barbie's were the best. No more on my end. :-) Sadly, all the good stuff are being made overseas. I hate that I have to wait so long for some good figures now. :-(

I know Barbie won't go away, but I wish they would do more realistic dolls. Too bad is all I can say that they aren't likely going in that direction. :-(
