*Preface this with the fact that I have entered very few competitions* Watching the reviews on the SJPORR challenge. Carbonation is important, especially if you have to ship. The beer probably needs to be slightly over carbonated when bottled. Great content guys! I want to enter more so all the info is helpful!! 👍🍻

Yeah I agree. If you aren't using a careful process to get beer from a keg into a bottle you need to reevaluate your method. The beer you pour into a glass from the keg might be perfect but its lost some carb along the way. Same thing happens going into the bottle and it needs to be compensated for at some point in the process. Cheers -Mike

Great stuff as aways guys! I've only entered a couple of competitions and have some great mistakes to learn from. First was a wonderful PB Stout that got great reviews from my friends, but I had no idea where to enter it. I tried the Milk Stout category and it bombed. Judges across the board said very good beer, wrong category, you suck (OK they didn't say it, but it was implied). All of the other beers I entered were bottled from my new kegerator 3-4 months before the competition. They bombed as well with many notes referencing oxidation. Lessoned learned - be sure you enter the right category, bottle your beer as close to the competition as possible, and try to figure out how a good method to get kegged beer into bottles (still working on that one).

I have judged many comps and it is subjective, perceptions vary and palates can be fatigued but consistent comments about your beers should be noted. I had a Vienna Lager last year which scored in the low thirties in one major Comp and a week later was BOS 45.25/50 in another major show. So you need a sense of wry humour.

@@BrewDudes Understood. Also - Trust the Yeast - to finish a beer on it's own schedule! I'm one of those Judges who lines up sample cups nearby, and opens Bottles over a bucket since yeast events and foam-overs happen...particularly in the big malty styles. To reduce subjectivity - it is good to remind Judges to re-read the BJCP Style Guideline before beginning.

How about hosting the "First Annual Brew-Dudes HomeBrew Competition?" Pick one style (e.g., NEIPA) and ask for your subscribers to enter. Brew-Dudes judge the entries and pick the winner. I really enjoy your content. I feel like I've learned a great deal more about recipe formulation. Thanks!

I like where you're head is at. However, organizing a comp is a lot of work on our end while trying to brew and build content. We will do another Community Brew in 2020. That is our way of getting our audience/community to directly interact with each other. If you aren't aware; we formulate a single recipe then enlist people to brew it. We then coordinate swaps among people via mail. Its a cool experience to compare how your version compared to someone else. Maybe next time we can encourage a tasting notes email form that participants can send each other too. See if people taste the same thing as you taste in your own beer. A little less work on our end compared to a comp but still a good learning experience. Good idea??? Cheers. -Mike

Make sure the beer is at its peak when they judge...I do the best when the beers are traditional rather than using an experimental type hop I use more established hops like Simcoe ect. The palate is more "familiar" to it is kinda my thought process

One of my favorite recipes is an American pale ale that uses Calista hops. I entered it in comps as an American pale and got docked every time for "fruit notes" "due to fermenting too hot." Didn't think about the notes from the hops being interpreted as a fermentation defect.

@@slegar Best for the Judge to suggest that the Ale be entered in a Specialty category if the variance distracts from the BJCP Style guideline. Rushing during judging - inadequate comment space on forms, and other factors can restrict the quality of feedback. OK to contact a Judge if you know them to be a decent Brewer - and are having trouble understanding their comments.

@@JulieMikalson no judge should ever..EVER be allowed to move beers to or judge them as a different category than entered. They can put in the note that it should have been entered as this or that.. but never modify a score or placement because the brewer entered in wrong.. regardless of why

This was a good reminder for a few items. I like the idea of holding back a few bottles. Never considered doing that. I've done the SJ Porr challenge the last few years and that is cool because you get to be a judge and contestant as well. Learned a lot that way. www.sjporrchallenge.org/ Sla'inte!

Have entered a lot of competitions in the past mostly to see unbiased opinion as Mike says but I am starting to lose faith in it. I have gotten better feedback from you guys they I do in most competitions and a majority of the time the 2 judges will contradict each other in their write ups. Pretty much every IPA I have entered is both too hoppy and not hoppy enough depending on the judge. I'll have some that say a beer is too sweet while the other judge say its not malty or sweet enough. I even recently had one judge score my beer in the teens and saying they were getting all kinds of off flavors, but the beer was bottled at same time as bottles I sent to you guys and to other competitions where the reviews were great.

John still does some comps. I sort of lost faith in it too. I'd like to do a video on some views about judging and BJCO etc etc. But I don't want to get too slammed for it ya know. I think the organization can do a better job at training for feedback. Cheers! -Mike
