Reading with ADHD
I’ve always loved to learn new things every day to satisfy my brain’s need for constant stimulations and reading books is undoubtedly one of the best ways to explore any topics of your interest and deepen your knowledge in that area.
But wanting to learn new things and actually following through with it are 2 totally different things for many of us with ADHD, including myself.
I don’t know about you, but I can’t even keep track of how many times I got so excited when just getting a new book to read, only to find that halfway in, or most of the times only after a few pages, I already lost interest in the book.
It just kept happening again and again no matter which topics I chose.
I got so frustrated with myself because deep down, I truly want to adopt this habit of reading for entertainment as well as learning at the same time, but I just can’t seem to make myself stick with it no matter how hard I tried.
But then I realized that I’ve been doing it all wrong, even though that’s how most people read books, but it doesn’t work for me. Something has to change or otherwise, I might as well just give up on reading altogether, which I don’t want to.
In this video, I'll share with you some tips on how to enjoy reading books when you have ADHD!

I just read a few books at a time. 3-5 so it stays manageable. I also make sure that they are different topics, reading difficulty and that I always have at least one fiction and nonfiction. If I get bored with one, even after a few pages or one chapter, I switch to the next. And you will eventually circle back to the first. Also really helps me reading for longer per sitting

Idk why I’m so stubborn. Is it an Adhd thing or no? Because I have to finish one thing, and it stops me from doing anything else. And I end up getting unmotivated and not doing it.

Something that helped me a lot: using different colored sticky notes and asigned everyone to one thing. Like blue would be something sad or yellow is something interesting. It can help remeber the plot even by just looking at the book side :)

I cannot read books, I always forget what I read by the time I get to the second page. I found that the older I get the more I hate reading and studying, which is why I am going to start taking ADHD meds, in hopes that I can make some progress in life

I have the same issue, as a kid I thought it is normal and I just have to reread the page or sentence.

I haven’t been able to complete a book in years! I keep reading the same paragraphs over and over. I doubt I’ll even make it through this video…

Hahaa that's totally ok. There are many ways to absorb new information, not just through books. It's ok if reading is not your thing :) Have you tried reading a physical book while listening to audiobook version of it? I think it helps sometimes with keeping track of where you are at.

I thought it was hopeless for me to read, but I'm finally in 80mg of Strattera and I can focus on reading books like a laser, it's an incredible feeling! Before, I would daydream for ages after reading just a sentence and I couldn't remember the previous page because I would put down the book for months out of frustration. I'm finally a bookworm again, like I was when I was a little kid 🥹💞 I never thought I'd find a medication that works for me, I'm so glad I was wrong!
