How To Engrave Glass With a Dremel | Beginners Tutorial
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I recently got my hands on a rotary tool, so I decided to try some glass engraving. It turned out to be easier than I expected and I’m very happy with the results. In this video I go over the materials you need and tips and tricks for getting the best results.
What you’ll need:
- Rotary tool (like a Dremel)
- Diamond coated bits (at least a ball-shaped one)
- Poster tacks
- Printout of the design
- Tape
- Wet cloth and a bowl of water
- Towel
- Dust mask
- Safety glasses
If you make one of your own, I'd love to see it! Send me a picture on Instagram :)

I appreciate how you practice first and show us. Others act as if they're perfect from the get-go. And practicing teaches alot.
I'm so glad that I found you! I just won a rotary tool workshop and you make it look so simple and I'll be watching your future videos!
Thank you for doing as much actual demonstrating as explaining! It helps visual learners a lot!
The tree is beautiful! ❤ I'm going out tonight to buy my first rotary tool. Your video helped me know what bit to start with. Thanks! 🙂
Thanks for the excellent tutorial! I'm planning a Christmas present involving frosting/etching glass and I was really fretting being able to do it myself with my Dremel tool. After watching this I feel confident I can pull it off! Thank you!
Excellent and easy to follow video. Many thanks. Enabled me to engrave sentimental mug from my grandfather RIP 1960. Much appreciated.
Nice work. Thank you for shareing this video with us. I really like how you implamented the stencil pattern on the glass.
Wow - I use my Dremel for wood carving. Can’t wait to have a go on glass. Think I know what I’m going to make for Christmas presents 😊
Absolutely love your tutorial. Looking forward to more!
Awesome. As I've gotten older I've found "let the tool do the work" to be excellent advice no matter the task.

that's what my wife says before telling me to do all the chores. i thought she was giving me a friendly pointer. i didn't realize she was talking about me the whole time! *boomer audience laughter*
That was very helpful Ellen, I'm always intimidated by etching. I must remember you said let the tool do the work. Thank you! Happy new year
Very impressive. Thank you for an excellent introduction.
Wow! I’m surprised how easy it looks to do and outcome is very nice. Will try myself, now waiting for dremel tool. This video made my day.
Nice work! And well guided. Thank you!
Fabulous well done ! I am a calligrapher wanting to try this. Good advice. Thank you.
It's funny that the tree you free handed came out better than the police box you traced. The tree almost looks like a machine did it. Very good job!
Wow, that tree turned out amazing!
Cool! I ordered my "dremel" for metal work mostly and didn't even realize it could be used to ingrave glass. That will be fun for my homebrew! :)
Thanks this was helpful, I am etching glass for all of my family for Yule and using them to make etched picture frame mirrors. I thought I could use my dremel for it, but wanted to make sure, and you've helped alot.
The tardis came out great. I’ve been nervous to etch glass but not anymore thanks to you.
Wow, that tree turned out wonderful!
Hi Ellen! Nice video, thanks for sharing your work. I will definitely start trying out these methods, as I've had my Dremel extension for quite a long time and I've actually never used it (nor have I ever engraved anything using the Dremel). I'd like to cut used beer/wine bottles and then engrave them to give them out as gifts. Your tree looked really good by the way :)
Thanks for taking the time to post this tutorial. I really enjoyed it. I am going to play with my dremel now. I am not as intimidated by it now as I was!!

Inspired, well done and thank you, Dremel engraved my first glass picture earlier today. Good video, keep it up
Thank you, have jus5 bought my first Drexel to try glass engraving and found this really helpful 😊
Great little vid. I'm a welder by trade and have a dremel and was looking for something to make I hadn't done before, so now, I'll make a steel wine rack with some engraved glasses I think. Cheers!
nice and easy to follow, thanks Ellen.
Hey Ellen, good job. One tip if you don't mind. When you put the paper inside the glass, put black cloths inside for 2 reasons. Less vibrations on the glass and that the paper remains flat to the inner surface. Where it comes to neck bottles, attach the paper to the glass and use a pointed bit to trace over the paper.
Thank You, Ellen! I got some inspiration from your videos...
thanks a lot , you are a great artist, well done
Your bits would last a lot longer if you lubricate them. You can use either a water drip system (ONLY IF YOU'RE USING A FLEX SHAFT) or glass cutting oil. It'll also cut down a lot on glass dust. You should still wear a mask and glasses, but it'll cut down on the amount of glass dust in your workspace.
Thank you ,excited to get started
Ellen, that tree was gorgeous!!!
Thanks for your video you have shared, it is really encouraging me.
Love that beautiful tree!

Ellen, I loved it! You made it plain and simple, nothing to be scared about. Nice to know which tips to use as you were engraving too. Just super, keep them coming. --Joe

+Works by Solo Thanks! I was a bit intimidated as well but it turned to be much easier than I expected. You only need to touch the glass very lightly, so it's basically just like drawing. Hope you give it a go!
Excellent explanations,thank you!!
I'm about to start messing with glass engraving for the first time, and no lie... I chose your video first because I saw the TARDIS 😹😻👍
Beautiful work, inspiring

The poster putty is a great idea.
thanks quick and fun to watch.
We recently we're able to play with a Dremel micro, it was pretty easy to handle and I think it would work well for a project like this too! Nice tutorial, Ellen.

Yeah, the micro would work great for this I think. I've never used it, but it should be much easier to handle than the bigger Dremels. My flexible extension gets the job done, but being cordless like with the micro would be awesome. Thanks for sharing :)
thank your taking the time and sharing
This is great thanks!
Thx for the tips I just got one for Xmas! 😊
That looks like alot of fun!

+Wood Chip Liz It is! Very enjoyable to see the design appear on the glass. If you have a Dremel you should give it a go :)
Thanks much . . . Just what I needed to know!
Great video thank you for sharing .
Nice video, love the T-shirt (Laura is awesome!) But just a small piece of advice: you want to hang the dremel, preferably above table level so that the FlexiShaft doesn't break or cause damage to the Dremel itself.
@CraftsWithEllen

+Ralph Nabhan Thanks Ralph. I did consider hanging the dremel, mostly to give me more freedom in movement, but couldn't find a good way to do it. Didn't know it also affected the dremel itself. I'll make sure to hang it next time :)
Nice work and some good tips Ellen 👍

Happy to hear it Jim!
Pretty cool
your a pretty good artist i can see you have a knack for it . tip i do alot of wood carving with a power rotary carver its like a dremel in every way just bigger . when you did the tree at the end if you got some spray adhesive you could glue the picture on there with spray adhesive then scrap off the left over paper or even just wash it off . and you would not have to free hand anything . i do that sometimes or use carbon paper again i work with wood not glass . i have seen a couple home made set ups using a 2 liter bottle plastic of course with a hole in it as well with water the water comes out the hole and pores onto the glass to keep the dust down you dont want glass dust in your eyes or lungs young lady . and i would use goggles over them safty glasses dust will find any open area it can and get in your eyes . just tips you dont have to use them if you dont want to good luck with your projects dear .
