How To Enamel Jewelry: Cloisonné and Champlevé Beetle in Fine Silver and Transparent Vitreous Enamel

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I make a pretty large beetle pendant in this video using various enamel methods: Cloisonné and Champlevé. The fine silver is 0.8mm thick - so both pieces together make it 1.6mm at the thickest point - the walls.

Loved watching your process. I hope one day to have a kiln and try cloisonne with fine silver. The beetle turned out lovely!

Thanks little Cherry! Yes, if you one day afford a kiln you’ll love working in this technique. It’s very meditative. You don’t need a big kiln like mine - the small kilns are also perfect for small work

That's beautiful, did u use any Blue fuse (or equivalent) when fusing your silver? I thought u needed it! but hoping it's possible without as I'm finding it hard to get in the UK, Thanks for another great vid ;@)

Hi Mike, thanks for getting in touch. Yes, I did use Blue Fuse - which I don't think you can get in the UK...I got mine from the woman who makes it via Etsy I think (Lillian - can't remember her surname. She's based in North Carolina). Look it up online and I'm sure you'll find the link. I believe you can make your own. Also, it may not be necessary to use it...I haven't tried fusing without it but I'm sure you can.

Beautiful work, Geraldine!! I have a question... When you sold a piece It didn’t let go in the kiln? I am about to start enameling, but I am going to use just the torch in this beginning. Thanks!

Hi Luiza, thanks for emailing. I use hard solder (Eutectic solder) which flows at a higher temperature than my kiln is set at. In other words, the solder flows at 1000 degrees (Celsius) but the kiln is set at 800 degrees. What you don't want is the solder re-flowing inside your kiln because the jump ring or earring posts that you soldered on will come off. So, when you want to solder a jump ring or bail onto the back of a pendant for instance, you will need to use the hard/Eutectic solder which usually comes in a flat strip. Enamel doesn't combine with solder and that's why I fuse the two front pieces rather than soldering them. But I do use solder on the back for the jump ring. I don't do much torch firing but it is worth a go. Fire the piece from underneath not from on top because it may leave black scorch marks on the enamel. It should be fine to solder a jump ring on and then fire with a torch. Just use the right solder! And make sure there is plenty of ventilation as well. Good luck!
