How To Eliminate Panic When You're Stuck in Mount (BJJ White Belt Tip)

Спорт

In this video I give some tips on becoming more comfortable in the bottom of a tight mount position in BJJ. This video is a response to someone who sent in a question asking for techniques to escape mount. But I don't cover techniques because he said he tends to panic and become uncomfortable with the position. In Brazilian Jiu-jitsu I believe it's very difficult to survive and escape any of the dominant position if you aren't able to get some level of comfort.
Now I'm saying you're going to like being in the position or anything like that, but you do have to be able to relax enough to think and setup a proper defense in bad spots. This is true for any position in Brazilian Jiujitsu but I think it's especially important in positions where you're at a disadvantage and the smallest mistake could lead to getting submitted.
So if you're having trouble panicking in the bottom of mount then I hope this idea of learning to get comfortable with the uncomfortable is useful to you.
Thanks for watching!

I’ve got pretty weak lungs and mount was always a bit terrifying to me in the beginning. I basically did what Chewy is saying. I also found that if I slightly bridged (one or two inches) I got enough pressure off of my lungs enough to be able to breath in mount no matter how the pressure was coming down. That allowed me to chill and think.

The key I think is... Don't try to get out at all when you're working through this mental aspect. When I started, I would waste energy, get frustrated, and panic every time I tried to escape with bad technique and couldn't. If you convince your brain that the goal isn't to get out, but just to relax, it's much easier. Make a mental note of what you should be doing to escape, but make the choice to be defensive and stay where you are. A few weeks with this approach and you can beat that claustrophobic feeling very quickly.

I’m 38 and I finally broke the anxiety and started jitsu. What you just said literally make a click noise in my head. I started doing some private lessons because I felt like I was holding people back (even though everyone is super patient and willing to teach) and wanted be a better training partner. I rolled for the 1st time after about 4 hours of open classes ( 3 weeks due to my own schedule) and was asked to roll to see how I move. It’s been a long time since I’ve been in an uncomfortable position where I felt helpless. I like to think I’m in decent shape and have ok cardio but after being put in just pressure like positions, I felt myself gassing out quick. I was relying on my strength to push and pull and it wasn’t getting anywhere. I tapped 4 or 5 times to just pressure because I couldn’t breath. Now I understand it was because I was in an uncomfortable position and panicking causing myself to hyperventilate because I was uncomfortable. Such a basic statement but crazy how it just clicked with me. Thank and I look forward to watching more of your videos.

Slickcow 101 very limited wresting no BJJ other then messing around with friends. At this point I’ve only got about 6 classes (1 1.3 hour each) on the books. I like to think I’m progressing on the drills we’ve been practicing. I find myself day dreaming the drills in my head the following day and looming forward to doing them again. It’s been a while since I’ve found something that’s grasped my full attention like this has. This coming Monday I have a private with the coach and a pretty big blue belt. I talked with him about feeling uncomfortable under the pressure of weight so I’d imagine some rolling with him should help knock out that anxiety lol

its true, you gotta embrace the panic and the pressure. you are not gonna die from that so just stay calm, same thing happened to me when i got my back taken, i was panicking a lot and when someone got a not so good choke i would tap immediately, now when someone takes my back i stay calm and when someone chokes me i put up with it a tad and try to find a way to get out of it and i do so.

Much of the problem could be the coach telling him to force an escape. Many gyms use lower belts as training dummies. I am not saying this is the situation in this case, but many gyms roll like this. Very glad I started my training over 10 years ago under a great coach who trained directly with Royce, Rorion, and the rest. The focus is always defending first.

If I'm mounted, I tend to arm frame at the opponents hips to not let them mount higher (whilst also intentionally leaving my neck open for bait). Once the opponent goes for the neck (as it's too tempting for most people!) quickly bridge whilst they have no posts, and its amazing how often this works. 👍🏻

@@ShortGirlsClimbCounters If they're ending up higher on your chest after bridging, I'd perhaps suggest your bridging needs a little fine tuning. If your heels are to bum (to give you maximum explosing) and you're timing the actual bridge (the rotation of your body onto one shoulder), the person on mount will either have to post using a hand or take the roll. If they post, immediately grab the wrist of the hand that's posting, and pull to disengage that post.. Now YOU have wrist control. Hold on to the wrist and re-bridge in that same direction. :-)

You've done a video on people not feeling worthy of their blue belt. I'm on the other side of the scenario. I'm a white belt and I beat blues quite regularly with little effort. I sometimes feel really bad for them so I go easier. I know that's not healthy training for me or them to improve, but I'd love to hear your opinion why. Thank you and love your videos!

Chewjitsu: I just watched your Japanese vs BJJ for self defense video. How about pulling a Dave Camarillo and doing both judo and BJJ, but specifically for self defense and not necessarily giving a shit about tournaments? I feel like for self defense purposes getting the takedown is crucial and it seems like judo is a vital missing link for achieving that.

This principle is the same as falling through ice on a lake. If you panic, your heartrate goes up which means you can't breathe which means you can't think which causes more panic. If you relax, you can hold your breath longer and compose yourself to get out of the bad situation.

@CHEWY What should I do if the person who has me mounted (60 pounds heavier) doesn't look to submit? I get with the same partner who's been training for multiple years while I only have a couple months and all the time when he gets mount he will just lay there on top of me until the timer goes off. Sometimes I feel obligated to keep trying to escape and end up burning energy because if not, nothing will happen. Any advice?

What's something you wish he'd do (or would've done in case you don't train with him anymore)? I'm a new white belt and I don't know any submissions but I often sit and think about what my next move is while my training partner is under me. I don't mean to do this so that's pretty much why I'd ask you as someone who's had to deal with it
