The surfactant I sent you for silver plating was K-12 (sodium lauryl sulfate). It is a common ingredient in detergent and hair shampoo. You can use neutral dish soap (regular, not ultra-concentrated) as an easier alternative. I also found that this solution tends to react with certain plastic containers. So it is much safer to use glass containers like you did. Here is some guideline on the solution I have used. This formula is based on making 500mL (half liter) of silver plating solution. You can use NaOH in place of KOH. NaOH comes in more pure form and is much easier to find. For a different volume, adjust all amount accordingly. Chemical list: · AgNO3 (Silver Nitrate) - 5.0 g · KOH (Potassium Hydroxide) - 6.0 g · Succinimide - 11.5 g · KNO3 (Potassium Nitrate) - 3.5 g · Brightener (diluted for you) - 1.2 g (use the eye dropper, the marker in the middle of the stem is 0.2g) · Surfactant (the bubbling agent used in toothpaste) · Boric acid - 12 g · Distilled or de-ionized water - 500 g Step 1: Make of fresh silver hydroxide (dark brown precipitate) Dissolve 5.0 g of silver nitrate in ~200mL (8oz) of water in container A. Dissolve 5.0 g of potassium hydroxide (KOH) in another small container B with ~150ml of water. Pour entire 150mL KOH solution into container A and stir lightly for a few seconds to make sure all the brown precipitation is in fine particles (no lumps). You can rinse container B with a small amount of water and pour into container A. Now all the silver has been converted to insoluble silver hydroxide. Do not let it sit for more than a day before proceeding to the next step. Step 2: Make of soluble silver complex compound Slowly add ~8.0 g of succinimde to container A while stirring the solution. The dark precipitation will slowly dissolve and result in a clear solution. You have just made the magic ingredient! Step 3: Make of final plating solution Measure the following chemicals and add them one at a time into container A with a stirring motion: 50mL of water; 3.5 g of succinimide; 0.5 g of KNO3; 10 g of boric acid. Now you should have a solution at about 400 mL. Using a separate container to prepare a KOH solution by disolving 1.0 g of KOH in about 50mL of water. Add 10mL of this solution, to container A, at a time while stirring and measuring the pH of the main solution. Make sure that the final pH reaches 8.5 to 9.5. To use the pH testing strip, you can cut it into smaller pieces for multiple testing. Do not reuse the testing strip. Use tweezers to grab a small piece of the test paper and dip it into the solution for 1 seconds. Check the color within a few seconds. A blue to dark blue color is your target. Place a small amount of the surfactant into a small, capped container, add 50 mL of water and shake vigorously. After the bubble settles a little, pour this solution into the main container A. Finally, add 1.2g of brightener into the main solution and mix well. Check the final volume to be around 500 mL. · Plating parameters: Voltage: 1.0 - 1.8 V (you can experiment to see what voltage gives a better result) Use pure silver as the anode (to the positive lead on the power supply). Please take extra care so that only the silver is in the plating solution. To get a better result, try to use similar size of conducting surface on both cathode and anode. This is just my finding in most cases. If the anode is much smaller than the object being plated, to achieve a better result, lower voltage must be used which results in longer plating time. Of course, the most important thing is to polish and clean the surface of the object to be plated. I found that a degreaser works well to remove polishing compounds. After degreasing, dip the base in 10% hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid for half a minute to remove any oxidation film. Rinse with flowing water (tap water okay). Plate before the surface becomes dry. Keep stirring during the plating process. The shiny silver coating should develop with a minute. If the surface becomes dull or yellowish again after a few minutes, you can gently rub the surface with an extra fine polishing paste (like a car paint swirl mark remover).

Well I got my ingredients and mixed them up. I am highly satisfied. It worked better than I was expecting. I've silver plated probably 25 rings and the plate is relatively durable and very bright. My solution is about a month old now and I"m getting a precipitate in the solution. I'm assuming it's silver that has precipitated out. You wouldn't know how to get it dissolved back in solution would you? Also, do you have any idea what is in the brightener solution?
