    Man Subaru people can be so uptight. You helped someone with info to do this swap into my LGT and it’s a great engine. People hate this swap and I don’t know why ..it’s a better engine and the ej255 is crap. Across the board it just falls apart constantly so idk why everyone hates this swap so much … I’m glad to see people like you with good credibility giving these swaps some justice. People swap Hondas all day and it’s no issue but with Subarus people just love to judge 😂 thanks for doing the car community a favour.

    Extremely valuable video, thank you! Question, to avoid any issues later with tuning, have you swapped the exhaust side cams and camshafts to non avcs components? This is also factoring in doing valve clearance corrections with the new cams etc. would this be a better option than manually advancing the avcs exhaust cams?

  • @TheSubieSanctuary

    @TheSubieSanctuary

    4 ай бұрын

    I personally have not done that. Yes if you swapped 255 exh cam shafts and gears it would leave you with correct exh timing. Youll need a non avcs cam seal. As for the solenoid and stopping or restricting its oil flow. That part is slightly unknown to me. Ive heard of people removing the valve and plugging the in and out oil holes. But cant confirm function or safety

It's the same final drive I'm pretty sure so would I be able to use the same rear diff and axles also? Last question, what drive shaft would I need to use? Hey guys, another question for you: do you add a timing belt guide/keeper when swapping these 20X motors into a WRX? Many of the 20Xs obviously come from auto cars that don't have the timing belt guides...

  • @TheSubieSanctuary

    @TheSubieSanctuary

    You could add them if youd like. It would require removing gears on both engines to get back timing covers off. In the many I’ve done, there has yet to be an issue just using the crank guide. For us and people paying for the service, it all comes down to is the cost worth it to them. If your diy’ing and want the extra piece of mind, definitely no harm in swapping the rear timing covers over

    Ive done this a few times using the twinscroll. The twinscroll is actually may better suited for the ej20x/y. They are incredibly responsive in the low end and sound sweet with the EL exhaust. When buying a motor just make sure you get the twinscroll intercooler and the twinscroll downpipe cut off. As long as your 20x/20y came with the top mount intercooler (they are different from original wrx one) and also the twinscroll turbo downpipe cut off (optional) the reason for this is to cut and weld it to your stock downpipe. Secondary option with respect to downpipe is just getting a twinscroll downpipe. Note* the front o2 sensor will now mount in the top of downpipe. Soo good it’s outlast my lgt with 240k I don’t want to put money into. Already looking to part out car and take motor to swap into a hatch. I love Honda because of the cheap k20 so I can beat it no worries. But ej20 now is my new k20. It’s taking my 20psi on a vf48. I’m sure it’s not efficient but idc lol. Just want a new body subi at this point and I need a reason to convince wife I need a new ride.

    Because the 20X has variable exhaust timing, wouldn’t it be able to advance or retard with oil pressure changes, even after setting the timing back one tooth? I’m just not clear on what that ~14 degree retard (I believe) accomplishes if the AVCS lets it still actuate.

  • @TheSubieSanctuary

    It can lightly and unnoticeably float but since the no power to the oil control solenoid, Its remains in the same phase all the time. Turning back the exh cams, just gets the 20x exh timing closer to the original 255 exh timing. They can be a little gutless in the bottom end without doing the timing mod vs doing the timing mod

    @@TheSubieSanctuary that makes sense. Thanks for clarifying. I’ve heard some folks say it’s essentially a set it and pray kind of modification but I guess the theory is that both cams are getting equal oil pressure and should hypothetically affect both cams equally, even if the ECU isn’t actively phasing the exhaust side. How many degrees of retard do you think the one tooth change works out to? Somewhere between 7 and 10?

    @TheSubieSanctuary have you tried retarding the exhaust timing 2 degrees? I'm curious what the difference between 1 and 2 teeth is down low.

    @@codyd.18 hey there, we have not tried 2 teeth, but we did try 3 teeth once. The prefect spot is actually 1.5 teeth which isnt possible obviously. 2 teeth would be fine as well, may net a slightly lumpy idle and warm up though.

    can you keep the ej20x turbo and up pipe?

  • @TheSubieSanctuary

    @TheSubieSanctuary

    Yes you can, you would leave on 20x/y header, up pipe, turbo. You would also need to make sure you get the 20x/y intercooler as they are different. Lastly you will need to either weld a twinscroll flange to your down pipe or buy a twinscroll downpipe. Your front o2 sensor will now have to go into the top of down pipe as well
