One of the #1 questions I was asked in 2022 about my 2018 Audi S4 was how do I launch the car so well? In this video I explain the basics of how I make sure my car doesn't creep forward when activating launch control. I also do my best to simplify how launch control works when using a ZF8 automatic transmission vs a dual clutch transmission.

SAVE MONEY ON YOUR INTEGRATED ENGINEERING PURCHASES BY USING THIS LINK: - performancebyie.com/vancityaudi Something that I should have discussed in this video but forgot to is how long you should hold down launch control. The one thing I always remember is "Spinning ain't winning." So if you are noticing wheel/tire spin on launch, reduce the amount of time you are holding down the throttle before you let go of the brake. I also forgot to mention that these tips will also work with B9 SQ5's. Good luck!

@lits5984 sounds like a software or hardware issue then. Have you logged the car when lunch control is active to see what the car is doing? If not, have you reached out to your tuner letting them know the issue?

I have an appointment at Audi next week for some other issues with the connectivity app. I will see if I can talk to the mechanic working on my car, maybe he can run a diagnostic or knows of the issue. Thanks Adam and thanks to your videos I am seriously considering a B9 S4 soon. My concern though has been from other content providers mentioning reliability issues with the engine. You definitely push your B9 S4 hard. Can you please make a video detailing your findings if any?

No findings to report thus far. My car has been perfectly mechanically sound to date. Please knock on some 🪵 for me 😉
You can actually map the fluid transfer module if you want. The Buick GNx had the same issue and people have custom coded a mapping which acts as a virtual line lock. I am just not sure how you'd equate that on an AWD setup.
Nice tip Adam!

Happy 2023, great to see you! It's interesting that the ZF8 in the Audi doesn't have a legit Launch Control function. I had the same transmission in my '14 BMW 550i X-drive and it had a full launch control feature. I guess it's just Audi vs BMW software.
@VancityAudi
Жыл бұрын
Very interesting. So when you activated launch control in your BMW, the car wouldn't physically try to accelerate while your foot was on the brake? It just sat there and instantly built boost while the rpm's raise?
@scottc78

@@VancityAudi if you had the traction in "sport" or Off, and the car in Sport+, holding the brake and flooring the gas would bring up "Launch Control Active" under the speedo. I didn't have to pump the brakes, but you had to floor the pedal or it could push through them. It held the RPMs around 2900.

@@scottc78 It's a ZF8 with a torque converter. From what you said above It works the same way. You don't HAVE to pump the brakes in these cars but it certainly helps prevent the car from moving forward. Especially with the Stage 3 cars that make well over 600lb/ft.

Absolutely. I always launch with it completely off like I show in the video.
So what kind of set up is this true for? When my B9 S5 was stock, it was exactly like this, it tried to push through the brakes. Now I’m 034 stage 1 and it doesn’t do that anymore. Car holds steady with just a moderate push of the brake pedal and I can build as much boost as I want. Does this start to become an issue again like you described once you get to the higher stages/more power?
@VancityAudi
Жыл бұрын
Maybe it's different for everyone, but I experienced it starting at a Stage 1 - 91 octane power level because I have downgraded brakes. Other people noticed it at a Stage 1 - E85 power level.

2021 SQ5 with but only stage 1 tune here. Pumping the brakes didn't work for me. I'd still push right through. I now skooch the seat up 6-8" to increase leverage. Now, I can hold at 4,200 RPM till the ECU cuts RPM due to transmission overheat warning (~8 sec)!
@VancityAudi
Жыл бұрын
Lol, seeing as pumping the brakes was only half of the equation, I'm not surprised it didn't work for you. You'll also never need to hold down launch control that long, or you'll end up spinning off the line. It's also not healthy for your car to build up that much heat by holding it down that long.
Lovely and helpful video. Okay two questions. What is your desired RPM/boost when launching? Does it change when not on a strip (Mexico.) Also how do you time the launch if it doesn’t automatically hold the RPMs for you? Hopefully those made sense
@VancityAudi
5 ай бұрын
Desired RPM/boost will depend on the amount of traction you have. Proper drag racing tires on a prepped track, you'll be able to load it up more. Shi$$y street tires on a slippery street, then you'll have to dial it back. Once you've established what practice best works on the surface you're on, you'd have to figure out roughly how long it takes to build the appropriate amount of boost before you let off the brake. Heads up racing off a flash light or something like that would be extremely hard. At the track it is easier once you're staged.

Hi mate I have heard that duing launch control on the B9 can break few things and its not safe for your car
@VancityAudi
8 күн бұрын
Whoever you heard that from is being a little b#tch 😂 Of course you are more likely to break things from utilizing launch control when you're making a bunch more torque over stock. With that said though, I did a TON of launches in my car and never broke any components. I also know of a ton of other B9 owners that use launch control all the time that have never broken anything
Is this bad for the timing chain and the torque?
@VancityAudi
10 ай бұрын
They wouldn't offer launch control in the vehicle if it was bad for it. It came from the factory with this option. Now, does it cause additional strain to many of your car's components? Of course.
I just went stage 1 with IE tuning with my 2018 S5 Sportback, and the problem I'm seeing is that when I hold the brake down, and step on the gas, the revs initially build but then go back down to 1000. When I come off the brake, there's a delay, then it accelerates. What am I doing wrong?

It won't. Like myself, there are people and companies that have launched their cars hundreds of times with no damage to the drivetrain. Axles have let go at higher torque levels, but that should be expected when you are doubling the hp from the factory.
