    My mailbox finally bit the dust. It’s been on its last legs for a couple of years. It’s attached to the post with duct tape right now (of course). I’m an older woman who is not a DIYer by nature. But your video has inspired me to tackle this, with the help of my friend who actually lives in the house. Funny story. I’ve never been stung by anything (mosquitoes don’t count). On my 65th birthday, I went out to get the mail. Apparently wasps had built a nest under the box. Whatever I did annoyed them. Holy stings, Batman! I got stung at least six times, and a couple of those suckers got in my house, to continue the onslaught! That’s one birthday I’ll never forget.

    Aww, so sorry to hear that. Happy belated birthday to you! I had the same problem last year and a friend gave me a suggestion that worked great...lemongrass. Yep, I planted some around my mailbox and haven't had a problem since. I even plant it at different spots around my property now, and it smells good. I'm in Virginia and it grows well. Good luck to you. Be safe!

    2022 Suggestion. Fully install the stake into the post first and then drive it into the ground as a unit. This is the only way to be sure the post is fully seated onto the stake.

    Thank you for taking the time to comment! I'm thinking about doing an update video...it's been over 6 months (through the snow and ice of winter!) and it's held up well, in fact, I would say it's looks just the like the day I installed it. As I mentioned in the video, it doesn't have the sturdiest feel to it, but it's not shifted in position at all.

    Thanks. I purchased a similar post--one with a steel insert. I think that I am going to insert the rod into the post first and set the rod and post into cement. I am referencing several of the comments posted below regarding these two changes to your procedure. I live in a rural area and my mailbox was hit by a farm tractor--which tractor--only the Shadow knows. Anyway, great video!!!

    thank you for the video -- they also have this in a full post, Ive used it twice and it works very well (just replaced it again because the neighborhood drunk took it out.... anyway I also would recommend putting the metal piece in the wood first then using a scrap 2x4 and small sledge hammer to pound it into the ground as an assembly it just seems easier.

    Same happened to me. My neighbor notified me that my mailbox had been run into, leaving the wooden post broken and my very new mailbox scraped up and on the ground. The little solar post light was a few feet away. So much for upgrading the old mailbox. At least the dinged up new one is still usable. Might need some Testor's enamel for touch up.

    I don’t think a little bit of flex is a problem as long as it springs back. If your ground is soft enough or wet enough that it starts leaning incrementally, that’s not good, but as for just having a little flex as opposed to perfectly solid, I would say flex is actually better. The reason we’re replacing our mailbox now is because somebody hit and ran it one night. It was in concrete in the ground, so the vehicle just shattered the wood like a toothpick. I hope it did a number on their car too, ha. But I would rather have a mailbox that could be pushed over by a car, then I could just pick it back up and put it in another spot.

    @@RaymondGinn1978 Oh, you know what? Mine is cedar. Maybe that is why it was more. It is the same as yours in appearance. In any case, I got it in the ground yesterday. I had to use a different wood base to set the box on. The thin wood in the kit came already badly split but it is a 120 mile round trip to Home Depot for me so I improvised with some thicker scrap wood. I set mine in a planter then drove the stake down through the hole in the bottom of the planter. I added quik cement inside the planter leaving room on top for soil to plant some flowers in. That post is not going anywhere and does not wobble a bit. Your video really helped me out. Thank you.

    Unfortunately one year later the post you show isn't available from Home Depot. But the "Simpson Strong-Tie 4-in x 4-in Powder-coated Wood To Wood Post Spike" is almost as easy -- and I used a treated 4x4 that I easily cut to length with a common hand saw.

  • @mst3kpimp

    when you hammer the post on top of metal rod you will likely just be pounding the rod deeper in the earth with not that much getting inside the post, you should hammer rod fully in the post first. The reality is most peoples earth will be too soft for this to really work and I needed to dig and get some concrete but the metal rod is useful for holding position. I dont think the post is weather treated so I put on some Thompsons water seal.

  • @HowTowithKevin

    @HowTowithKevin

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts, valid concern. I was definitely worried about not getting enough of the rod into the wood, like you said, where the stake would just push into the ground But was also worried about splitting the wood by hammering in the whole stake if I put the wood on first. What I found was the wood went over the stake fairly easily with the pre-drilled hole, which you can see by me just using my weight to push it down over it. Hard to know if I got it all in, but until the part I used the hammer to finish off the post, I could see the stake hadn't moved at the time. Also, good move on using the water seal; I would've used that had I some around; just didn't have the time to run out and get some. I was surprised the post wasn't treated when I got it, thus that quick paint job.

    Did the self drilling screws come with the install kit or did you buy them? Sometimes if I'm worried about splitting the wood because of hammering directly on it, I'll instead find another piece of wood and place it on top of the other piece of wood and hammer on that. Or I'll use an outside rug if I don't have scrap wood lying around. Also thank the person who helped film you for me. That was nice of them.

  • @HowTowithKevin

    @HowTowithKevin

    2 жыл бұрын

    The screws came with the mailbox and post kit (not the wood anchoring kit)....using another piece of wood works great, too; if the mallet didn't work, I was going to use that next. Using a rug is an idea that I never thought of!--great idea, because that would definitely help protect it, too...thanks for sharing that!...And then that was my fiancee that recorded me. I'll pass your thanks on...she already likes you from reading your comments...and when you mentioned a video game in one of them, I think it had to do with scrolls or something, it was the game that she plays so that sealed the deal, lol!!

    Great question; you could do that, and that's what I would've done with a full wood post for sure. But I think the issue with the single metal spike (with it being fairly thin) is that the wood over it could still flex in the part above the ground, even if the metal spike submerged in the ground was cemented. Circumstances dictated what I did here, but so far it's holding up well. I'll probably do a quick follow up video after I see how it handles the winter.
