Nicely done. Honestly, I never thought to clean the bead on my rims before having new tires mounted until I developed one of these slow rim leaks. However, going forward, I sure will.

I took my rims and soaked them (over the bead parts) in white vinegar, overnight, which made for a lot less sanding, and used a scotch- brite pad to remove all black traces of old rubber. I then sanded the bead area, in the round-the-rim direction, with 220 grit (wet and dry). Nice thing about using wet and dry (with 50/50 vinegar and water) is that there is no dust to worry about inhaling, if you have lung issues. I found a few small scratches going across the bead, which I sanded out over a long area, so as to not to create a depression. Some recommend silicon gasket sealer, but I figure if the bead area is really smooth with no scratches, like new, (especially across the bead area) it should hold air like it did when it was new, and I don't have to worry about the gasket material failing or leaving a big mess when I change tires! (Thanks George, I wanted to share my secrets!) Many installers don't check rims carefully enough before mounting tires, and some even use grease to make a seal, which I've never seen work. It has to be smooth metal, unscratched!

two normal scissor jacks , one undir mid car until tire fits under behind front wheel and space above for other jack to push down on bead then other side bead both loose, then screwdrives big ones to lever off start side with dip trench in rim for bead near middle, find vids here on yt.

Good video, but the most important area to clean is where the outside edge of the tire meets the rim, that is where the air pressure pushes the tire bead against the rim, and where most of the seal is accomplished. Also applying a thin layer of grease will help prevent the rim from further oxidation and future leaks.

Great video, Thanks. I have had this problem on a number of vehicles, I am guessing for these reasons. 1. Older vehicles. Driving older cars over time the rim gets debris and corrosion on the bead seal. 2. Living in NE Ohio, lots of snow and slush, road salt and melting chemicals. 3. Due to temperature changes and minor leaks (before they become major) the tire pressure can get low and I think (just my guess) is that lets in more water, salt and grime. 4. Vehicle sitting (for various reasons) and not being driven for 1-3 months, tires go flat and I think water runs into tire. When vehicle was under my control I would fill the tires, but still was sitting waiting until I could repair it. 5. In my experience, the place where I buy tires has tried to stop the leak. They do it for free since I am a regular customer, but what I found out is they simply run a wire bush around the rim 1 or 2 times, then put on a lot of black bead sealer. Then after bring it back a third time they put more bead sealer on it. So much it was on the front of the rim, like big 1/2 inch globs and made a mess and looks bad. And I think that over time that will start leaking again. Summary - I am going to pay someone to properly fix them, or pay a small shop to take the tire off, I will sand it down and have them put the tire back on. IMPORTANT NOTE: if you remove the tire from the rim you need to mark the rim and tire and remount the tire back so the marks line up. If the tire was balanced, I think that will keep it balanced.

I just had the same issue with tires I bought less than a year ago. It is a reputable place but they installed the new tires without cleaning the rims. Since I bought road hazard coverage maybe they just wanted to get the car done quickly. If something went wrong it could be taken care of with the coverage.

Yeah I got new tires on a car I bought but had a leak. Found a leak along the bead. A tire shop near me said they would reseal it for 20. They used the air tool like you had, cleaned it up, also on the tire itself, put some liquid along the rim, put the tire on and done in about 5 minutes. No leaks as of a few days!

Thank for sharing this. I got my new tire from costco and after like a month it slowly starts to leak and my tire sensor came on put some air on, back to normal. A month later my tire sensor came on again i'm like WTF is going on. this are new f@#$% tire!!!! Add some air to it back to normal again. One morning i'm about to go work the damn tire sensor came on again!!! Drove to work thinking it will be ok, once i got to work one tire was half flat i'm like it'll ne fine!!! After work (it was 8 hours later) totally flat had to drive slowly about one block to the gas station, add some air to the tire and drove to my cousin tire repair shop i told him i that i can hear air hissing out from the tire valve core. He look at me use the tool to tighten the valve core add some air to it, you are all set. I ask why is the valve core loose?? He says over time it gets loose i says ok but this are new tire shouldn't they check the valve core to make sure it was tight too?? Make me think costco intentional loose the valve core or they forgot about it?? After tighten the valve core problem solve no tire sensor on anymore

Agree. Also the corrosion inside may be further evidence of their incompetence in that they may not be draining their air compressor tanks which could result in excess moisture being pumped into tire when inflating.

I can agree, use only enough "roughness" as needed to clean the rim. If a wire bush would work then use that. But in my area, NE OH, the grime due to moisture (rain, slush, snow), the use of salts and snow melting chemicals, a wire bush may not be enough to get it clean.

It may not seem intuitive but the bead seat is actually clear coat and should be treated like so. Tire shops need to use correct bead lube that dose not deteriorate clear coat (dish soap should not be used). For better protection clean and wax the bead seat prior to mounting the tires Andy this should never happen
