How to Dye Yarn with Food Coloring

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

BLOG POST: sheepandstitch.com/library/ho...
Food coloring is great for dyeing yarn. It’s inexpensive, accessible and allows you to use existing pots and utensils since it’s food-safe.
What’s more, the whole yarn dyeing process is incredibly easy and fun!

    Just want to let everyone know that this works with a skein that is a 90% acrylic and 10% wool blend! You will get a more pastel color and not all the food coloring will be taken up by the yarn, but it works! It's all a uniform color as well, no splotchiness. Thanks for the tutorial!

    Thank you so much for this tutorial. Is there any way you kan do different colours like a handpainted style? And then maybe boil it after?

  • @sheepandstitch

    @sheepandstitch

    2 жыл бұрын

    You can definitely handpaint! Just make the dye more saturated. Add the vinegar directly into the dye. Paint the dye on and then steam it in a bamboo or vegetable steamer for about 20 minutes. Some people will also spray the yarn with diluted vinegar to ensure the dye stays put. Some people also wrap the yarn in cling film before steaming, but it’s up to you. Good luck! Dyeing is fun!

    This is interesting. I have some questions: 1) is this a colour fast method or do the colours fade over time? 2) This wool is submerged in hot liquid. Is this not against the treatment instruction to use only lukewarm water? Or should we make allowances for shrinkage, as this is an animal fibre? And if so, what would be so bad about washing woollies in hot water? Shouldn’t there be a point at which wool won’t shrink anymore? 3) Is there a difference between non-dyed wool and the cream/ivory coloured yarns one gets easily in shops?

    I’m kinda hoping you answer this, can you do it with an already crocheted plushy and just tint the color?

  • @sheepandstitch

    @sheepandstitch

    I haven’t tried this but I think it could work. The dye won’t be that even but if the yarn is animal fiber (wool, alpaca etc.) it should take the dye

    Thanks for saying animal fiber (wool) and not plant fiber (cotton). it took me a long time to learn that; good for people to know. // SHLM & HaB (peace & love). The Name of the Creator is Hayah asher Hayah, as what He told Moshah (Exodus 3:14), preserved in the Hebrew Scriptures. There is a curse to the G-o-d name (Isaiah 65:11-12), preserved in the Hebrew Scriptures. All followers of the Messiah are to do the 7 appointed times (Leviticus 23), but no more animal sacrifices, following the Crucifixion of the Messiah. We are now of the order of MLK TSDQ (King, righteous), to Whom ABRaHM tithed. Ask the Messiah to be your personal Savior. He said to him, I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6). All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of Hayah (Romans 3:23). The wages for sin is death but the gift of ALaHYM is Everlasting Life through Messiah Yahushgh our Master (Romans 6:23). That if you confess with your mouth the Master Yahushgh and believe in your heart that ALaHYM raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved (Romans 10:9). He Himself is an Atoning Offering for our sins, and not for ours only but also for all the world (1 John 2:2). The Messiah died on the cross, & Resurrected three days later (presenting Himself as First Fruits to the Father). Please ask Him to be your Savior. He is the ONLY way to Everlasting Life.
