    Thank you very much^^ When Stabilizing 3 colors, just dip the 2 colors and dry them in the air, not in the oven, and the last color can be penetrated using a vacuum chamber and put in the oven?

  • @CaseyMartin707

    @CaseyMartin707

    You could do that but I use the oven to make sure I’m not contaminating colors in my chambers. It’s entirely up to you. If you wanted distinct lines between the colors. Like a half and half, you’d have to cook the first color.

  • @CaseyMartin707

    @CaseyMartin707

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes they do. It technically doesn’t have to be done, but drying them to 0% moisture is the best way. You can still get really good results if they’re already fully dry (usually around 10-20% MC depending on climate), but getting down to 0% through an oven is the best. However I have many times got great results like in this video without doing that.

    Hi Casey, How come you didn't cook the blanks in an oven first to pull all the moisture out before putting them in the dye? I've read you should always bake the blanks for 24 hours at 200 degrees to cook all the moisture out before dyeing or pulling a vacuum. Thanks.

  • @CaseyMartin707

    @CaseyMartin707

    8 ай бұрын

    If the wood feels bone dry, and is very light, you really don’t gain too much by bringing it to 0% moisture. Yes technically it would be a little bit better, but nothing the human eye would be able to pick up on, as you can tell these dyed just fine. If I have wood that doesn’t seem bone dry I will of course dry it. But I think that step is much more relevant if you live in a place with high humidity and so the resting moisture content of wood is higher

    Great video. I'm curious whether stabilizing will improve the finish of cuts, especially on softer woods. Maybe through reducing tearout, idk. Any insights about that?

  • @CaseyMartin707

    @CaseyMartin707

    3 жыл бұрын

    It absolutely does. It holds the wood together better and makes it stronger, so the finish is much better. Whereas softwood will tear out like you mentioned. Cactus juice itself also polishes really well so if you’re using a fine tooth saw blade it comes out super smooth.

    @@CaseyMartin707 Thank you for the reply. I'm very new to woodworking, and I recently purchased a mini lathe to turn cork grips and reel seats for fly rods, as well as other items I'm sure I'll want to make. I live in Montana, and subsequently have a lot of pine and cottonwood around to grab up, so I was wondering how they would turn and how I might deal with the fuzziness and tearout.

  • @CaseyMartin707

    @CaseyMartin707

    3 жыл бұрын

    You absolutely can and in another multi dye video I do that. It’s totally personal preference. If you do pull vacuum, you’re going to get really dense color penetration for the first two colors. Whereas the capillary action basically just does highlights throughout whatever the final color under vacuum is. But like if you wanted to do 3 distinct colors in a vertical straight line on a piece of wood, you’d pull vacuum on the bottom and top color you do, and then final soak pull vacuum for 3rd middle color.
