Looks good. The only additional step I'd have added is to tap the wood form with a hammer to get the finer particles to fill the voids where you can see the gravel

To help delete face voids try vibrating with a tap of a hammer or a hand powered sander with no sandpaper attached
Step looks great. Thanks for the demo

What?! Who said you weren't cool?! In my book, you 2 are the coolest, simply because you are real! It doesn't get any better than being real, so many fake people out there. Yay!! Was hoping you might put something special in it like you did the coins since it's such a focal piece. Looks great! Also, wouldn't this be your 4th dry pour, not 3rd? If I recall your first one was the mud room, walkway, pump and hose spot and now the step. 😉👍🌟 Can't wait for the next one!

Great job, I think I would’ve wet existing concrete before the dry pour for it to stick better to existing concrete, but I’m no expert
Jay love and enjoy watching your videos. May the lord bless and protect you and Jen and working on the step
Thank you for the content 😄👍 just a thought in a frugal way 😳, you could have used some of the concrete lumps from the last dry pour to save a bag or so. Happy days 😄
I've watched tons of dry pour videos on youtube.
Looks great! You mentioned you will fix the big rocks you see in the steps. Will you show how you will do that? Could add it to a video of many little projects?

Yes we will probably make it a whole video on it's own - well that being the main topic! Maybe we will film that this weekend! Working on the new building now!
Cheers
Not sure would matter where you live, but where I live in the US Southwest where things are very dry, soaking the bottom (ground) of the form before starting to add the dry mix helps moisture come up as well as the showers from the hose.
Great job on all the cocrete work!! You guys are simply amazing and so sweet. Enjoy that extra step, you really needed it.

In a different life I was a poet or a song writer. 🎵 😉
Going that thick, I think I'd have done a few things different. 1. I'd have drilled some holes into the sidewalk and then put a few short pieces of re-bar in it, and two, wrapped the inside of the form with some towels, to wick the water on the sides. down into the sides, to make sure not to have any dry spots that don't cure because of lack of water. 3. I think I'd also have filled the concrete half full, wet it good, then added the rest and did like you did at the end, just to make sure you get the water all the way through. 4, the voids you had in some of the sides... if you have an air chisel, you could hit the sides to vibrate it so pack to mix a little better. Love you sharing the cheap little projects and also sharing what it cost you to do it.

Hi just my thought I would have built the step out of wood you were almost done when you built the form but again to each their own right. Good job hope you don't need that concrete later lol
I would have cut the back down and notched the sides to fit under your deck stringer. Wouldn’t have left the gap that way.
Should have placed some rebar between two slabs to keep the top step from moving away
Good job gays
Probably would have done a traditional mix for something that thick ,
Did you place a bit of rebar in there? Seems kind of high to support itself wout some strengthening but what do I know?
❤
😎👍 Cool Michigan folks
Great job. Are you going patch the places on the side where the rocks are showing thru?
@OffgridwithJayandJen
25 күн бұрын
We have some ideas and will show the solution in a video coming soon.
If you have a electric sander or something that vibrates (keep your head out of the gutter) us it on the boards to help settle the concrete mix. Even a Sawzall without a blade might even work.
@OffgridwithJayandJen
25 күн бұрын
Smart
Looking good is there a reason that you didn't use rebar into the set concrete so that the new concrete could adhere to the bottom. Love your video's
@OffgridwithJayandJen
25 күн бұрын
Just kind of experimenting here....hoping since it is just for light walking traffic that rebar isn't necessary..fingers crossed
I’m thinking about pulling the trigger on a dry pour for the outdoor kitchen, 80 sq ft

Great job! Did you add rebar to the step?
@OffgridwithJayandJen
3 күн бұрын
We did not.....we figured it was such a small chunk it wouldn't be necessary......hope we figured right lol. Best wishes
I'm sure bush radical is saying oh hell no being a concrete guy...lol

Interesting, didn't know you could dry pour that thick. Please share with me what concrete you uses. I looks pretty course. BTW, what part of Michigan are you in? The U. P. ?
@OffgridwithJayandJen

We were experimenting....it worked out pretty good. Using mix from menards.
i did a dry pour once, i filled gunny sacks with cement mix and aggregate and layed rebar in-between layers, my retaining wall has been standing strong for a couple of decades, i did it to create a level place to park my tractor
@OffgridwithJayandJen

Really cool, do you think it would hold strong for root cellar?
@dirttdude
17 күн бұрын
@@OffgridwithJayandJen Yes but you'll save your back and a fortune if you use those 8X8X16 brick with mortar, if i was to dig another root cellar today, i would do sip walls
Have you thought of making a porch covering? ... so you can sit outside.. also could put panels on it too..
@OffgridwithJayandJen
25 күн бұрын
The was in the original plan....but we decided we like the look of the cabin without it....and we didn't want to block the view
While It worked, I would have put some dirt or wood in it to make it a bit thinner as it might crack at some point this winter. On the other hand I prefer wood to concrete, but it ain't my house... 🤔 😎
So why not add some water to the mix as you put the bags into the form and use the form as the vessel/container. Just put in less water than you might if you put the mix in a mixer and mixed it. Then you would know you have some water lower down. You could still follow the entire remaining process except you would not have to water as much in successive hourly watering. Also could do the first watering, let the top firm up a bit (maybe even after the second watering), then run the tool along the form to create the smooth edge? Seems to me that if you did a wet pour, you would put in the concrete, but let it set for a bit before you do any edge work for the final float (if you wanted a smooth top surface vs rough). That raises a question? Can you do float on the surface after the first couple of waterings to allow for a smooth surface? Are you in an area where the ground freezes or not? If so, frost heaves will probably play havoc with both the sidewalk and the step, but time will tell. It does strike me as less of a physical challenge than mixing, however, for something small like this, I wonder if you could mix a bag of concrete in a 5 gallon pail and just pour the wet mixture in the form. perhaps even do half bucket at a time. Wouldn't take you very long for this small of a pour.
@OffgridwithJayandJen

I'm going to show my husband.. This is way easier.. Good job covering your faces..Jen great job wearing gloves..I didn't making a hearth..my skin rubbed off..it took months to recover
The dry pour is nothing compared to the air conditioner and heater you guys installed...life is good
I thought you forgot to sweep up the overage before the first spray but you must have caught it

You don’t need the board up against the existing step because the existing step is the form itself

Dry pour works well, as predicted. SO JAY... you think you might consider enlarging your bathroom to a size that could actually accommodate an adult. Not saying I told you so
Dry mix ain't half as solid as a wet mix guys. It eventually crumbles over time. 😊
you could have made a pressure treated wood step would have fit in better If you want concreat go bact to the city

@OffgridwithJayandJen
24 күн бұрын
some day.....animals are great, but we have commitments that require we leave the cabin from time to time for a few days or week, so it would be challenging to have animals for us
Dry pour is not the way to pour concrete. Professionals do not do it for a reason. It’s half as strong and crumbles easily. Your choice though.
