Congrats man! You are my personal favorite as far as car reviews/tours since all the others just walk around the car a million times and talk about what color the interior and exterior is. In other words they just point out the obvious. You actually go into depth about the way the car "feels" and the others don't.

Why are so many people focused on the whole "ZOMG he's gay??????????" aspect like little 12 year old girls. He did a fantastic job showing all the components of driving a manual transmission. His sexual orientation obviously didn't hinder him.

Yep, after watching a bunch of other how to vids on manual transmission yours was by far the best. I think I'm going to be watching it a few times before I get my Honda. Thanks for putting the time into that. My mother used to let me shift for her in her VW Vanagon, reverse on the far left. It WAS super fun, but I was in the passenger seat, right hand side. It was exactly like learning how to drive a stick shift if I were in the UK, ha! So I'm all like backwards and it's going to take some getting used to. Warn my passengers I guess, lol. Thanks again.

Hey thank you for posting this video. It really helps. I already had an understanding of "how" to drive a stick shift (and yes I realize this video is old), but it really helps to actually see your feet while you explain it. I also know jack squat about mechanics so it's nice to know how a clutch actually works. thanks!.

Awesome video man. It's always nice to put a face to the voice we've all gotten so used to hearing. I always love coming home everyday and watching your new vids on my iPad. Not having a manual in my Saab 9-3 is probably my biggest regret. I love that car so much and it's already a blast with the turbo but I know it could be better.

Thanks for the awesome video! I am buying a Fit (glad to hear that you like yours) tomorrow with a manual. I have driven an automatic for 5 years and only once or twice driven a manual. I have always wanted to switch so I could have more control over my vehicle. This video gave me some good tips, insight and helped me set my expectations. Keep up the great vids.

Congratulations! Like others have said I think you are the best car reviewer on youtube right now. Your videos are the perfect length, the layout is excellent, and I like that you share your opinion while not being too biased. You definitely deserve more views, and youll get them if you keep it up. Oh and about driving stick, I'd love to, but I don't know anyone who has a stick who'd be willing to let me drive their car : (

I first learned to drive stick the day I bought my Jetta. I was stranded by myself with this thing at the lot after my grandpa left. It took about 400 stalls and a lot of angry people, but a year later, I'm definitely proficient at driving stick.

I just learned how to drive a manual just over a month ago and it's a lot of fun. I've gotten better at it and can now drive it pretty well on the road. I learned on my family's new 2013 Dodge Dart Rallye Tubo with a 6 speed and that car is so much fun to drive! I agree with you that more people should know how to drive a manual since its just good to know how, even if it's not for everyone. I think the reason many people today don't know how is because manuals are becoming more and more scarce.

This is awesome. I've watched my dad drive stick ALL the time so I pretty much picked up what to do. It know how the actual gears and gates work but I've NEVER driven a stick and my guy friend told me I could drive his RSX anytime I wanted but it's stick lol so this is helping me a lot and since it's a Honda I know it'll be pretty easy. So I'm really excited to drive manual now.

Congrats dude! I grew up with two parents who owned manual cars up until I was 13. That's when they got their first automatic car so I pretty much knew the basics of driving stick all my life. I got my first car in a manual without having driven one ever before and at first it was hard but a week after I was driving around :D Now I consider myself pretty good at driving stick and I love it :D I also made a vid. but I havent put it up yet, and I want to join the campaign to "Save the Stick!" I practiced driving my friend's manual for MAYBE a total of 10 hours about 4 years ago. I bought a manual Chevy Sonic in February (2013) and it was a struggle at first (as it will be when you first start, in any case), but with what I remembered and just the general knowledge of what to do I had no trouble adjusting and getting into it. The hardest part is getting a feel for that specific car, and remembering that you're driving a manual (pulling up to a stop sign without the clutch=killed it).

To answer your question, I've driven manual for many years now. Cars, trucks, semi's, and bikes I've done them all. Modern automatics have come a long way in the efficiency department as compared to their 60's and 70's counterparts. The dual-clutch auto's are nothing more than an automated manual transmission (AMT), aside from mechanical and electrical reliability it's really only software that sets any of them apart from a competitor's AMT.

I learned how to drive a standard in a 1964 Ford Fairlane. Now, know that these years Fairlane's have manual brakes, manual steering, not to mention a manual clutch pedal that is not on a cable. The clutch is actuated directly from the clutch pedal. Also, the shifting was all done on the column, not the floor. This is called 3 on a tree for those old school guys out there. Oh and BTW, manuals are so easy to drive, and my preferred choice of transmission for a car, thanks!!

Tiptronic/Shifttronic transmissions will let you shift the gears with an electronic switch vs mechanical parts, So when you shift up or down the transmission is still somewhat automatically shifting the gears but it will hold it in that certain gear for you. In a Manual you need to use your foot to lift the clutch (the third pedal) and mechanically shift into the gear you want.

Good video, and I know you do car videos only and not commercial tractor trailer videos but it would be epic if you made a how-to video for a semi with a 9 or 18 speed manual! I heard you have to double-clutch when shifting and the shift patterns can be all over the place!

Here in Brazil the car sales of manuals ones still beats the automatic ones. The manuals are more fun when you want a sportive drive, but for the day-day use, automatics are so much comfortable. But you can also have a slightly more sportive drive with an automatic, come on paddle shifters and tiptronics are cool too!

It helps to downshift at a lower RPM then you would when up-shifting. For instance, in my car I normally up-shift at about 2k-3k RPM depending on several factors. When I down shift I simply ride the brake and allow my RPMs to drop to 1500 before down shifting. You can also "blip" the throttle a bit to get your RPMs up to where you think they would be after you engage the clutch, if you really want to.

One thing I would like to add; Your father is right. When you are at a stop light if you put it in manual and have your foot off the break if someone hits you you will fly forward into intersection or the car in front you... If in neutral always keep your foot firmly on the break

For Toyota Hiace, starting the engine does not require pressing clutch in. However, drivers should always ensure handbrake on and gear in neutral before starting the engine for manual transmission.

***** No, not quite the '70s. We weren't seeing those until the mid- to late '80s. Our first one was in an '89 Mazda B2200, although I think they were probably putting those in for a few years already. But it's such simple technology to include (merely a push-button switch of some kind) that I'm surprised that they weren't doing that since the very first days!

I'm in the UK, so I only drive a manual. It's a bad idea when stopping at lights or turning just to go to neutral and brake. Use the gears to slow down. Get off the gas while gently braking, down shift to 3rd or 2nd and ease up the clutch, then press the clutch just before you stop to avoid the stall. Its called engine braking, and is how we are taught here. Much safer and better for the car

  • @collinslfc

    @collinslfc

    8 жыл бұрын

+MrPhil1503 If you're going to downshift to slow down, then you would need to rev match otherwise you would be putting more wear on the clutch. Either use the brakes and keep the car in it's current gear before decluthing to prevent a stall; or downshift and rev match.

If you are going downhill you can pretty much just slowly release the clutch and it will get going, most of the times, you need to add gas first and get the revs up to about 1500 then start letting go of the clutch slowly until you feel it catch and the vehicle starts moving.

also about braking, in a manual transmission car it is better to brake while in gear, just let go of the gas and brake, you will improve your brake because the engine compression will also slow down the car, when the revs reach 1000 rpm push in the clutch and downshift or put it in neutral, this is good for emergency braking or higher speed braking

Clutch in, blip to raise RPMs, shift to lower gear, engage the clutch again and back on the gas. Some people can use their right foot to "heal and toe" the brake and gas to break and raise RPMs at virtually the same time. I haven't tried.

I've driven a stick car daily for 5 years. I'm so used to it that when I have to drive an automatic, I accidentally hit the e-brake on the floor. I get lost without my third peddle!

I gave up as I have been trying to learn this since the 80's. Last lesson was 3 days ago- did fine in parking lot. My job is six blocks from my house yet I can't do it. Frustrating is an understatement.

Depends on the vehicle. In my Fit I would be driving 45 MPH so I would be in 5th gear already. If you are just cruising along, you should be in top gear for the best fuel economy

That vehicle is a good choice in the used car market. Only issues you may notice is the noisy interior and somewhat lackluster fuel efficiency. I'd also recommend a used Mazda3 and Honda Civic if you want to stay in that price range.

My son wants to buy a new car and give me his (which is stick). I don;t know how to drive stick..but he says I should learn. SO here I am watching this video to get an idea of how to do this.

also in winter, you do not want to lock up the wheels while braking on snow, ice, so you use it less, you use the engine brake more simply push in the clutch and go down one gear, then release the clutch without giving it gas the car will slow down a bit, also if you need to go down steep slippery hill you put it first or second and let the car go down on almost inertia, this way it will not gain speed limited by the lower gear and you will have full control of it, manuals are better

Very well done video! I have watched other people's instructional videos and each and every time I would get pissed off because they suck at recording. I wish my car had a stick... I have a 2005 Honda CR-V, and I would greatly prefer a stick over an antiquated automatic. Unfortunately, sticks in Honda CR-Vs are so rare, and from 2007 and onward, Honda dropped the manual transmission options from the CR-V...

I will ease off the clutch when shifting from 1st to 2nd for smoothness, if you just dump it you will jerk your passengers around lol and some ppl wiggle the shifter bc some cars have a notchy shifter that is hard to get into gear, not with most Honda shifters :)

That's true about parking in first. My parents had stick cars for many years and they would always park in 1st gear and sometimes they wouldnt even put the e-brake. When I got my car i would always leave it in neutral and e brake but my dad told me about how you can use 1st gear and ever since then I always park with both 1st gear and e brake just for safety's sake lol
