Learn how to combine the clutch with throttle and the brake so you take off smoothly and DON't STALL. Learn how here. Manual Car PDF ► www.smartdrivetest.com/drive-... SUBSCRIBE TODAY! ► / smartdrivetest SEE TOPICS BELOW
This video is for absolute beginners.
The two hardest gears to learn in a manual car are first and reverse.
***********************
0:00 Putting the Three Pedals Together
2:07 Going Forward Faster
4:01 Clutch & Throttle - Forward
5:53 Clutch & Throttle - Reverse
7:14 Clutch & Brake Forward
8:50 Clutch & Brake Reverse
9:13 Conclusion
12:59 Question: Do you have exercises for students to learning to combine the clutch with throttle/brake?
14:04 Blooper
This is the second lesson, and you will learn to combine the clutch with the throttle and brake.
However, without clutch control, you are going to have difficulty driving a manual car.
So if you haven't look at lesson #1, be sure to view this video: • How To Drive A Manual ...
***********************
EXERCISE #1 - hold the brake with your right foot and bring the clutch out to the friction point with your left.
When you're at the friction point, the tachometer will drop 1-200 rpm and you will feel the vehicle vibrate a bit.
When you have the clutch at the friction point, the vehicle can now be held by the clutch. Hold the clutch at the friction point and move your right foot from the brake to the throttle.
In a gas or petrol engine car, rev the motor up to 1,000-1,200rpm and control the clutch through the friction zone.
Move your left foot off the clutch smoothly and as quickly as possible.
Take your foot off the clutch to prevent premature wear.
***********************
EXERCISE #2 - after developing competency with the first exercise, move reverse gear and do the same exercise.
Hold the brake with your right foot and bring the clutch out to the friction point with your left. When you're at the friction point, you will feel the vehicle vibrate a bit.
You can't look at the tachometer, because you should be looking out the rear window of the vehicle
That is why it is important to become competent with exercise #1.
***********************
EXERCISE #3 - when you are competent with the first two exercises, move to working the clutch and the brake.
In this exercise it is the same as the above: hold the brake with your right foot and bring the clutch out to the friction point with your left.
Now you're going to throttle up to 2,000-3,000 rpm and then move right foot from the throttle and brake down to 1,000rpm.
When the tachometer goes to 1,000 rpm push the clutch in and bring the vehicle to a complete stop.
***********************
EXERCISE #4 - when you are competent with the first three exercises, move to working the clutch and the brake in reverse.
In this exercise it is the same as the above: hold the brake with your right foot and bring the clutch out to the friction point with your left.
When you're at the friction point, you will feel the vehicle vibrate a bit.
Good luck on your road test.

These videos make more sense than when my dad tried to teach me once. He pretty much completely forgot to mention about this friction point for the clutch, and said simply "release the clutch as you throttle." Little surprise that I kept stalling out. Very informative.

I watched all the videos posted by you on driving a manual and the first time I got to drive a manual which was about 2-3 months after I had watched the videos, I did fairly decent for my first time. I think I only stalled once or twice trying to take off on a bit of a incline, I just purchased my first manual vehicle a few days ago and I absolutely love it! For anyone who hasn't drove a manual or is just starting out watch the videos they will definitely help you learn and get the basic concept of it. Thank you so much for taking your time out of your day to make these videos, they definitely do help.

This is helping a lot, I own a manual as it’s the only transmission my car comes with (2018 Ford Focus ST) but I still make simple mistakes with clutch control.

  • @wheelman1235

Clutch control with gasoline engines is rather more sensitive than the diesel counterpart and therefore the tendency to stall when starting off on first gear . Many videos on youtube about manual driving technique but seldom display correct information . This is the correct technique for standard transmissions by isolating the clutch and then applying minimum throttle . This is also very beneficial for the clutch , especially for trucks , as the clutch isn't overheated and no tear and wear . In some cases with my five speed transmission , I only use the clutch for starting off with NO throttle - on a level surface and lightly loaded. Diesel equipped vehicles are more forgiving with the clutch and as usual PRACTISE MAKES PERFECT !! Happy clutching from Europe .

Hi Annibal Moreira - thank you for your comment and endorsement. Yes, a number of times after getting out of the diesel truck I would stall my petrol engine car because I was expecting a lot more torque out of the engine. If one can learn clutch control in a gas engine first and then move to a diesel, a driver's clutch control is much better and they will be a better driver with a manual car. Thanks again - if there's anything further we can do, drop us a note. All the best, Cheers Rick

Hi Jake - Thank you for your comment and compliment. And you are most welcome. I might suggest that if you're going to learn drive truck that you just go there and skip driving a manual car. Driving a manual transmission in a passenger vehicle is completely different than learning to shift a non-synchromesh transmission. Hi Tony - Thank you for your comment and and great compliment. I might suggest you work to bring the clutch out first and the rev the throttle - that technique will reduce the wear on your clutch. Still, I'm sure you're proficient with it now that you get the clutch out quick, and that's all the matters to prolong the life of your clutch. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best my friend, Cheers Rick

Are you moving more quickly through the friction zone of the clutch in the 2nd exercise b/c you're giving it more gas? And does your online driving course happen to go into this kind of detail? Thanks so much! :D

Hi. Thank you for sharing. I would like to share my experience. I really practiced what I saw on this 2 videos. I didn't watched the #3 as I thought this is only I needed. We went out somewhere and I drove. I thought I did well. I shift up the same way as I saw on this #2 video. My driver instructor ( family member) told me I drive worst than before and I will burn up the clutch this way !! I didn't understand why ?! I changed the gears the way as I saw in this video. I came home and checked again this video and I recognised that, there are more videos about "manual car driving" I checked out the #3 video and the recognised that the way to change gears is totally different from N to 1 than 1 to 2 , 2-3 and up. Please if you are a beginner and you don't know how to drive a car with manual transmission don't go out and drive before you watch ALL the videos about " How to drive a manual car" Now I know what I did wrong but I still have to work on my first gear too as I hold the clutch way too long at the friction point before I fully release the clutch . Thank you for sharing all the videos

Hey Big$MoneyBoss - after training for years, samurai warriors would go to the mountains, cease training and meditate for a long period of time. Now...I'm not suggesting you go to the mountains, live in a cave, and meditate; however, take some time to breath. You've got this - just take some time to practice you slow-speed manoeuvres. But more important, work on your foundations of driving in a forward motion and your turns. Keep in mind that examiners are somewhat more forgiving if you have the foundations down: 1) speed management 2) space management 3) observation 4) communication. And remember to breath. You're going to do awesome. All the best, Cheers Rick

The day of my driving test I will be driving a car I never drove before and I have 1 week to practice with it is that a good amount of time? So my problem is when I'm trying to apply throttle. My car's accelerator is frustratingly sensitive so that even with a little of pressure, the tach is already up to 2-2500 rpms. This makes starting off jerky and annoying. It might be because my throttle is electronic, yours seems to be less responsive. Have you encountered this before in other cars? If so, how did you make it smooth?

    @smartdrivetest

    6 жыл бұрын

Hi sharad702012 - Thank you for your comment and query. Approximately 1,000 rpm on the tachometer is when the road speed is too low, and engine will begin to bog trying to move the vehicle forward. At this point is when you need to push in the clutch, either to shift to lower gear, or to brake completely and bring the vehicle to a stopl. This technique works on most vehicles. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

Hi DJ Rafa - What kind of car do you have my friend that goes 30kph in reverse? In my experience, you really have to give it a lot of throttle to get any speed in reverse. All the best, Cheers Rick

Hi Corban Cutten - the clutch--simply speaking--is 2 plates that come together. If the 2 plates aren't in full contact, these wear. So with improper use over a period of time, you'll wear out the clutch. Consequently, you'll have to replace the clutch. All the best, Cheers Rick

You only depress the clutch peddle just before you come to a complete stop or when you can hear the engine is at idle point and if you are in a queue of traffic then the carry out the normal procedure by securing the car. Handbrake and neutral in that order and when it's time to move then clutch down engage 1 set the gas and release the handbrake as one coordinated movement to pull away smoothly under full control.
