How to drill tungsten carbide

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Tungsten carbide is one of the worlds toughest metals, it is impossible to drill using traditional drill bits. In this video a JCB diamond tech hole saw is used in order to drill through some 6mm or 1/4-inch-thick tungsten carbide. In a previous video I drilled out a snapped off HSS tap using one of these diamond coated hole saws, you can see that video here- • How to drill out a bro...

    I bought one of these on your recommendation to drill wall tiles that were so hard they immediately blunted tungsten carbide drills. Absolute magic - it went through 6 holes with no difficulty and little sign of wear

    What about titanium drill bits will they be able to drill though it? And can it be cut with the oxy/ceteyln? I can see that it's almost impossible to drill into tungsten carbide. Not that I have ever had to work with it and hopefully I never have too ☺

  • @ultimatehandyman

    @ultimatehandyman

    No drill bits will touch Tungsten carbide, it is very tough, which is why they use it for the tips of masonry drill bits and for cutting tools. I only found out that a cutting disc in a grinder will not even cut tungsten, a friend of mine tried it a few weeks back and it just turns the disc into dust! I'm not sure about oxy/acetylene! What was that piece of carbide used for? Some carbides are harder than others. The carbide tip of a masonry bit has more cobalt to make it tougher so it doesn't chip, but it's not as hard as other tungsten carbides.

    There is only diamond that will actually cut Tungsten Carbide. Before the material is sintered you can snap it in half like a biscuit its that brittle. You can chip tungsten carbide if you tap 2 pieces together, dropping it on a floor will do very little if any damage at all.
