How to drill tungsten carbide
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Tungsten carbide is one of the worlds toughest metals, it is impossible to drill using traditional drill bits. In this video a JCB diamond tech hole saw is used in order to drill through some 6mm or 1/4-inch-thick tungsten carbide. In a previous video I drilled out a snapped off HSS tap using one of these diamond coated hole saws, you can see that video here- • How to drill out a bro...

It was only a few weeks back that I found out that an abrasive disc in a grinder will not cut tungsten, I though an abrasive disc would cut through anything! Thanks for the comment 👍
I bought one of these on your recommendation to drill wall tiles that were so hard they immediately blunted tungsten carbide drills. Absolute magic - it went through 6 holes with no difficulty and little sign of wear

Nice job,..now I know how to do this too! This shows that 'quality' of the diamond bit is paramount. Thanks.

Tungsten is a bit of a pain to hold, I could of put it in the vice, but the pressure when drilling it, could have caused it to shatter- hence putting it on a board. Thanks for the comment ;-)

What about titanium drill bits will they be able to drill though it? And can it be cut with the oxy/ceteyln? I can see that it's almost impossible to drill into tungsten carbide. Not that I have ever had to work with it and hopefully I never have too ☺
@ultimatehandyman

No drill bits will touch Tungsten carbide, it is very tough, which is why they use it for the tips of masonry drill bits and for cutting tools. I only found out that a cutting disc in a grinder will not even cut tungsten, a friend of mine tried it a few weeks back and it just turns the disc into dust! I'm not sure about oxy/acetylene! Thanks for the comment ;-)

What was that piece of carbide used for? Some carbides are harder than others. The carbide tip of a masonry bit has more cobalt to make it tougher so it doesn't chip, but it's not as hard as other tungsten carbides.

Nice job. However, would be reasonable to drill the piece under the water. Just create kind of basin around the piece using plasticine for example. Or use some shallow pan :-)

I need to drill about a 1/4 inch (6mm) hole through a piece of hardened tool steel about 3-4 mm thick. Think one of these would work?
@ultimatehandyman

I tried these quickly on a hardened steel bearing race, they started off well, but then the but seemed to stop cutting, after a couple of mm (the bearing race is about 8mm thick). I have drilled hardened steel in the past using an ARTU drill bit - kzread.info/dash/bejne/rJZ-05SzYtzHaJM.html I hope this helps. Thanks for the comment

There is only diamond that will actually cut Tungsten Carbide. Before the material is sintered you can snap it in half like a biscuit its that brittle. You can chip tungsten carbide if you tap 2 pieces together, dropping it on a floor will do very little if any damage at all.
