How to Draw & Paint Better Tree Branches
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Drawing or painting tree limbs will be much more dynamic and effective if you break down the perspective to simple shapes and shadows. This is a follow up to my bare tree watercolor journal sketch with tips for visualizing and understanding foreshortening in tree limbs whether it be for drawing or watercolor painting.

Very helpful!! This is something I’ve been struggling with for a while. My plan is to get this under my artistic belt. Thank you!

Steve, more drawing techniques please.
@Gloria- Good to know. I will definitely be adding a drawing lesson here or there based on people's interest. Good drawing is the basis for using any painting medium.
Thanks! I have trouble with foreshortening sometimes. And this is pretty useful not just for trees but also other things (even the human body).
Fantastic tips. Thank you so much for sharing 👍🙂
This is the reason we are here, teaching teaching and lots more teaching and a huge thank you as I always get just what I need to move me forward and grow. 👍👍👍👍🇨🇦
Great video! Appreciate your clear and concise instructions snd demonstration .
You made my problem with branches much more clear. Thanks so much.

I have watched this maybe a dozen times. Drawing is important period. I try to practice and get better at foreshortening constantly. It doesn't come easily to me but with your and Alphonso Dunn's help I'm getting a little better. As always, thanks.

Thank you so much for this, Steve! I realize I’m really late to comment on this but it helped me a LOT! ❤
Thanks, Steve ... knew they were cylinders but never really knew how to approach drawing them.
Please continue doing videos. You are a fantastic teacher of watercolor. That is highly unusual as most are too stingy to share their knowledge. So thank you so much for you tutorials, tips, & tricks. Leigh

Now my trees will look better. Thank you!
I wish that I had you for my Art teacher when I was in high school. We have a small watercolour group in a seniors residence and teach each other. I pass on what I learn and tell them about your videos. Thank you for explaining these small details that we miss. Yeah, I'm in Canada (eh!) and that's the reason for the spelling of "watercolour". Just love your work! Thanks again!
Great video. Such an important lesson for us. We see these everyday but do not pay attention to such minute details. Thank you for this lesson
This was a HUGE help....can't thank you enough!! You ROCK Steve!!

I remembered the "forshortened" circle term from Middle School Art Class...but forgot what it meant. This is so important to me and than you again.
Great lesson in foreshortening, Steve. I find the most challenging part of this technique is knowing how much to shorten the part of the subject coming toward me, specially when figure drawing. Would love to have some more in-depth instruction on this if you have time. Thanks so much for sharing.
Thank you again for such an awe inspiring simple yet profound demo! It made so much sense when you explained it the way you had....kind of like dah! WHY didn't I think that way, ha! I know the video is almost a year old but the info. isn't -thanks for keeping them up and running still. I re-watch the videos over again & again, because I find I might have missed a technique because I was concentrating on another technique you were showing and my brain stayed there processing, ha. By the way, I agree with EVERYTHING Leigh Pogue said!!! Along with the other comments. Deb

+Debra Rasmussen Cool! Glad it made sense to you 😃! Sometimes I'm not sure if I am or not.
Oh my, wish Ihad seen this before my urban sketching session today. I was faced with a huge complex tree with a couple of foreshortened limbs. Just didn’t know how to handle them. Tried scouting the angles, etc. this video is just what I needed. I’ll go re-visit that monster tree and now be able to render her limb with confidence . By the way, my attempt looked like Zentangle meets Urban Sketching; linear, angular without life. Onward! Thanks for all your educational videos
you're awesome! thanks for sharing your knowledge! hugs from brazil!
Just at the right time! Thank you so much, excellent video
Oh WOW!! This is SO good! This helps so much. Thank you, Thank you
Thanks, Steve! foreshortening is a huge bugaboo for me. This video clarifies it a lot, especially your suggestion to think in terms of cylinders.

now THAT is a fantastic tip :) thank you
Thanks so much for the wonderful lesson on foreshortening! It was quite informative!
your videos rock! So, so helpful - thank you so much.
Thank you for the tree branch demonstration. Good clarification.
Thank you so very much indeed!
So glad I discovered you. I’ve been putting off painting this tree for weeks! Now I have a plan. Best teacher out there by far! Thank you!
Very useful - these little focussed exercises to accompany the longer videos are really helpful.
Agree 1000% with previous comments...foreshortening and perspective, building blocks of great drawings. Love the "little logs" lesson on overlap. So glad to discover your channel, although it does encourage bing watching! I'll be signing up as a regular. Thanks.

Hi Steve, Shortly after viewing this video we had the first snow fall of the season. The inch of snow on the tree branches made it easy to determine which way the branches were facing. By imagining the snow as a highlight I could easily see the foreshortened branches. The snow on the cedars and spruces clearly showed me what patterns of highlights that I would need to paint to create a realistic looking tree. Took lots of picture for reference. Cheers! Hank

I really like this video. I would like to know how to draw knots in the trunk or an actual hole going deep like where a squirrel goes in. I am bot sure how to create the hole, even with shadow I can't quite get it! thank you- love your show...
@mindofwatercolor

Hmm, not a simple answer. It's a light and shadow thing mostly. Not all knots will be alike. Study the light and dark values and light direction closely.
This was so helpful to me. Thank you!

How do you draw simple people in watercolour?
Hi Steve! Would you mind sharing what type of table top easel you use? There are so many out there..and the prices can really vary. Thanks!

Pamela Goodman I use this one mainly (see link). It was inexpensive and works great. There are many out there with this same design though that should be fine. I don't like 3 legged ones they are unstable. shop.hobbylobby.com/products/table-easel-129031/

Steve Mitchell Design I should also mention that I will sometimes just work flat or with a drawing board very slightly propped up. Mainly for very large wet background washes.

Steve Mitchell Design Thanks! Now I am kicking myself, because that is the easel that I first saw that I liked, and didn't get it! Thought I should look around first, lol. Should have gone with my first choice!
I have watched this a few times and drew it a few times. I get the concept. However, I keep seeing my foreshortened branches looking like "hands on hips" - branches are the arms/hands, and the trunk = hips. Practice, I know. I'm working at it. What I struggle with the most is light/shadow. Also a struggle is painting on good watercolor paper. My dad had tons of it which he carefully stored. I've cut down several full sheets into maybe 6" x 6". The paper is cotton. And I'm painting wet on dry. I've tried to adjust the wet amounts; the worst isn't even the bleeding. It's the thinning areas, where the paper becomes almost transparent. When I use less water, I'm basically doing dry on dry. For these tree practices I've used ordinary pencil or graphite, because I must be doing something wrong with painting to have thinning paper where I paint. Google isn't much help.
@mindofwatercolor
3 жыл бұрын
Not just practice. Observation, its critical. Hmm, sorry, never heard of thinning paper.
@maryhazlett
3 жыл бұрын
@@mindofwatercolor when the paper gets wet, at least in certain areas, when I hold it up I can see areas where the paper has gotten "thinner and the color shows through. Too bad I can't attach pictures. As for observation, I have been an observer, but I'm now beginning to "see". Drove through the cemetery near me where my parents are buried, and was looking at the many old, gnarly trees in a different way. They are similar to the ones you've been painting.
What pencil did you use?
@mindofwatercolor

Graphite wash pencils. Such as these Derwent. amzn.to/1PsXBFx

+debking74 I had an old oak tree die and we had to cut it down. I thought about doing a journal sketch of it. We'll see. Just remember that no matter the subject all drawing or painting is a collection of contours and values. Start there. Visualizing the shadow values is a place I usually like to start. Thanks for watching!
