How to draw fur in pastels | Step by step tutorial

How to draw realistic fur in pastels is all in the layering process. How we order these layers is crucial to creating more depth within the pet portrait. Drawing a Cockerpoo requires soft layers whilst still building details. One common mistake is that we want to add details to early on which limits the amount of depth and ultimately reduces how photo realistic that portrait will be when finished. By layering in this way we will not only capture the correct soft fur texture but also end up with a portrait that is far more three dimensional.

I would like to buy some pan pastels, can you recommend which colors will be the best to start with to do dog portraits?

I don't have many. About 20 colours. But I do like the browns, tinted versions of those colours and a mixture of warm and cool greys. They will work for 99% of dog portraits.
How do you get your pencils so sharp. None of my sharpeners work. I’ve been using sandpaper to get them sharper but they’re never as nicely sharp as yours. Help feel so frustrated!

I use a stanley knife to sharpen my pencils =)
