How to draw from reference and make it your own

How do you go about using photo reference when you draw and not just end up being a copy machine?
In this week's demonstration I’ll show you how to draw from reference in a way that puts you in the driver’s seat, so you end up with a drawing true to your personal style and signature. By following the tips from this tutorial you can feel confident that the drawing is fully yours even though you used reference photos to create it.
Materials I use in this video: Cretacolor Nero pencils extrahard and medium on Strathmore Sketch paper

Thank you! Your videos have been super helpful in breaking down tough topics. Would you be able to provide some insight on how to study drawing skills more effectively? Specifically, my question is: Should one be trying to make a finished piece more often and only study specific topics when stuck? Or should study take up the larger chunk and then application should be the distillation of what one has learned? Sorry if this question sounds a little too basic.

Love this question! It's an important one. I answered that in the video from two weeks ago How to get good at drawing after a plateau ( I think that's the title), but I speak more in depth about this in my free masterclass, which is linked in the description box below the video. They should answer that question for you ☺️
