Hi a la carte: As a painter for many years, I agree that the eyes are the key to realism in a work. The shape of the iris of the equine is actually a horizontal ellipsis, not oval or round. It is only round in young horses. Regarding the highlight on the eyeball, I only put a dot for the sun, never include the reflection of the surroundings you will see in the reference photograph. If we "see" something else in the eye's reflection, it compromises our connection to the image. Just my perspective. Great videos, and very enjoyable!

An Arabian or Saddlebred eye is different from other breeds.

Try my "how to draw a Circle" video. That might help. It is the method I use to draw circles. Also if you find your circles are more oval, practice tracing a circle over and over to get your hand used to the motion. Let me know if that helps.

I had to disect an eye at school a few weeks back, and that was all I could think of while watching this video. I guess that means that you draw them very realistically, which is a great thing. And no, it was not a horse's eye that I disected. Anyway, that was awesome! :D

Hi there Art a la Carte. You obviously have lots of talent, however I would advise you to actually study the anatomy of a horses eye. The sclera of most horses is actually black, but there are some variations. Some have white irisis, like us, but not too many.Also, you need to have a good look at how the eyelashes fall on a horse. They are thick, can be quite lighter than the eye - or as dark, but the sun might hit them - but they do not grow or show like on a human. Third - the iris of a horse is not only oval, it is horisontallt elongated, with a very special and distinct look. Nice video in all other respects. (Y)

I drew a horse eye after this and it looked amazing!! I went ahead and drew half of the head and the neck going down so it looked like it was grazing. Is there any way I could send you a picture to show you it so you can give me some pointers!??

Mine came ok but because my paper is for oils and acrylics it didn't really let me to shade and put as much detail as I wanted to put

Some horses naturally have smaller iris', or they are worry worts Lol, I have a horse who is a worrier, he isn't scared he just worries, but I see the whites of his eyes alot
