Well done. By far most clear demonstration of ARM vibrato, but of course not wrist. However the important part you did not mention is that you could practise this for literally months or years and it won't necessarily get faster. The REAL challenge is getting the movement to a musical speed. You have to make it happen. It will be a frustrating process. Some players find wrist movement more promising in this regard, and others gravitate to the arm vibrato demonstrated. You HAVE to consciously get it faster over time. It will definitely not happen by itself.

Well yes, of course, but you can’t speed it up until you can the basic movement correctly. Once your vibrato is working well I suggest speeding it up by working with a metronome - gradually increase the tempo.

I would suggest starting when you are very comfortable holding the violin, and confidently playing pieces up to about grade 3 level.

I heard it in a video that arm vibrato can damage your hand. Is it true? Also, is it okay to play arm vibrato even in higher level with more experience. Doesn't it look sort of wrong or awkard for an experienced person to play that way?

Hi thanks for your query. No, arm vibrato cannot damage your hand. Bad violin technique can damage your hand, but this is related to many issues, such as how you hold the violin, and how relaxed your left hand is. If you are holding the violin badly then either kind of vibrato could potentially cause you problems. I would advise you to get the basics of violin technique really secure before attempting vibrato. Many, many world class violinists use arm vibrato for example Oistrach, Stern, Vengerov. Professional players don’t use exactly the same vibrato all the time, they constantly vary it to make the sound as expressive as possible. Actually it doesn’t matter if you use hand or arm vibrato (the techniques are actually very similar), what matters is how expressive your sound is. Close your eyes and listen!

Most teachers fail to tell us that we need a good violin to learn vibrato. With a bad violin even with all the dedicated practice we may lose enthusiasm to continue. You will need a $800 violin to start with. After gaining expertise you can do vibrato in any violin. Of course it can be tough in a cheap violin.

  • @RosStephen

You can do vibrato on any violin! It’s just a hand movement. Obviously the better the violin the better it will sound, but there’s no need to spend a fortune.

This is total nonsense. Vibrato is not a function of violin expense. It is a function of skill and practice. You do not need an expensive fiddle to vibrate.
