It's so frustrating to be told "relax" and not know how. A few things you could try: 1) Experiment with making circles with the left hand thumb. First try just in a playing position with your thumb lightly touching the neck of the violin. Circle your thumb one direction and then switch. Work up to playing a scale very slowly while still circling your thumb. This will start to separate your thumb from your finger action. It's normal that every time we drop a finger on the violin we grip with the thumb to try and keep the finger in place but it's important to work on getting the fingers and thumb to be more independent. 2) If you have a bookshelf that is tall or a tall table or an upright piano, experiment (safely and carefully!) with letting the violin be held up by a shelf. Put down a cloth so you don't scratch your instrument and put your scroll on the cloth. Find a position where you feel the violin is supported by the shelf. Play a slow scale and explore allowing the violin (supported by the shelf) to hold the weight of your fingers so instead of pressing your finger down (and presumably gripping with your hand), you are feeling like your heavy hand would fall through the violin if it wasn't there. Explore transferring the weight to each new finger you put down as you play your scale. These 2 exercises should work to loosen your hand and wrist so that you can start to get some flexibility to explore vibrato. I hope it helps!

Your orchestral teacher should "teach" it whenever you desire it. Learning is intrinsically chaotic. A baby isn't banned from speaking until it has learned to walk! All facets of learning can be done at the same time. The notion that you shouldn't "do" one thing until you have "mastered" another is the reason why so many violinists and others are slow to learn. There is an assumption that learning several things at once somehow create bad habits. It's nonsense. If you want to vibrate (and it's good that you do because you recognise it makes your instrument sound better) then go ahead. There are plenty of ways to learn it like this excellent video.

I'm frequently surprised by how essential reductionism is to learning things. It is to music as it is to maths and research and to sports. The way you break down difficult concepts and techniques to its components, or altogether slow down its execution until it is blatantly clear to the learner what they're doing (even if the end result is obscured). And when all core elements are familiar, putting them together is a matter of will. It seems obvious, but still something a lot of people struggle to understand, and which many teachers don't easily convey. But I got the idea very well from this video. Thank you.

This is amazing! I've tried to learn to play the violin three times over the course of my life (now 30 something) and I can play - but I can't play vibrato. All of my teachers have told me that you just wobble on the string - which I just couldn't do. I ended up thinking some people could play violin and some (like me) just couldn't. This is the first time I've seen this technique explained in a way that I'm sure I would be able to practise and master! Thank you for encouraging me to take this instrument up again.

Coming from 30 years of classical and electric guitar(barely scratching the surface of fiddle instruments), where the vibrato requires stiff fingertips and bending the strings either laterally(electric) or longitudinally(classical), this was an eye-opening lesson. Based on this lesson, it appears that vibrato on the fretless instruments is not about stretching or loosening the string tension, but more about "rolling" the fingertips back and forth to vary the vibrating length of the string. Thank you for the great lesson!

You are literally the best violin instructor ever. I'm a new learner with guitar experience, and it's taking time for my muscle memory to kick in to a different way of playing strings. This exercise is hard for me.

As others have said, this is a really good explanatory video. I picked up the violin 18 months ago for the first time since I was 12 (so 27 years ago!) and I got my excellent violin teacher to start me off on vibrato just before we stopped lessons for summer holidays. This video has been great for filling in the gap while I’m away from lessons over the summer, thank you so much!!!

👏 Great video! Unlike brass and woodwind instruments that can do vibrato with each and every note, the violin is at a distinct disadvantage in that open string notes can't do vibrato. If, for example, the song ends on an open G, D, A, or E string, it won't be able to emote that sensational vibrato effect. 🎻🎶
