How to do small practical wheelies on dirt bikes ∣ Cross Training Enduro

Спорт

Everyone likes a long wheelie but while they might be good for developing your balance, in reality there are very few situations that require an extended wheelie a dirt bike. We can show you how to ride dirt bikes using enduro techniques and dirt bike skills. There is a much greater need for the short practical wheelie to get you over obstacles on the track. These enduro training vids cover many dirt riding skills and dirt bike techniques for improved off road riding. Cross training applies trials to enduro techniques.

How to wheelie an enduro bike? A common issue is riders saying their bike isn't powerful enough, or it is too heavy, or they lack the strength to get the front wheel up. Or they say the only way to wheelie their bike is by dropping the clutch. So, how to wheelie a dirt bike? This vid tells all! If you are really having trouble how to wheelie an enduro bike, try using a kicker first. These vids provide an intro on how to ride dirt bikes with heaps pf free training vids. Many of the riding techniques come from Graham Jarvis, Chris Birch and other top extreme enduro riders to form the concept of cross training - a blend of trials and enduro techniques.
We also believe it's critical to learn covering your rear brake. If you have good clutch control and balance, try this technique from a standstill after you learn the basics of how to wheelie.
The same principle applies for wheelies when sitting down, although it's harder. Remember the whole key of the small practical wheele is good technique. Trials riding doesn't appear to have much in common with dirt riding as much of the action happens at walking speed or even slower - but the balance, precise, traction and clutch skills help with enduro riding, especially for extreme enduro. This not only reduces your speed further for wheelies but stores extra energy in the forks to lift the front wheel higher.
A final note, as your wheelie technique comes together it will also become important to be able to land your front wheel when and where you want, for techniques like the double blip and punch method of crossing logs.
Does all of this sound difficult? But keep practicing as we know from experience there is always that breakthrough moment when it all comes together, and it opens the door to a whole pile of advanced enduro techniques. The growing interest in extreme enduro has seen a resurgence in trials riding riding internationally, and many dirt riders are now joining trials clubs to improve their overall skills for basic dirt riding or hard enduro events and endurocross.

This is just an introductory training vid, please see all the links at the end of this video for further advice. This is like asking 'how long is a piece of string?' It all depends on so many factors, I refuse to give any answers. Experiment, you'll work it out. But it should make sense that the small practical wheelie is for getting over obstacles so usually it will be first gear on most bikes. English not your first language? Subtitles in many languages!

Excellent video. I’d like to add, for those who’re new to this, it may help to try their technique in second gear first and get small wheel hops mastered first before going for the taller wheelies in first gear.

I usually don't make comments. I want to let you know that I have throughly enjoyed your vids. The comedy is outstanding. I laugh constantly at your side comments. I even pause your vids just to read your disclaimers, statements. However, losing your financial sponsor because of being butt hurt. I am tired of these overly sensitive b#S%A$DS. They think of nothing to offend other classes, people. I will continue to watch your vids. Thanks for all the time you spending the time to share your talents. I hope you never go politically correct ever. You should be able to state whatever is on your mind. Screw the negativity.

Another great video! I was taught that when I compress the suspension to drop your knees instead of pushing down on the bars. You drop your knees, then push hard into the pegs to again extend your leg. As you your legs extend fully the suspension will start rebounding and that's when you apply a bit of power. Most of the guys in the video aren't doing this but watch Chris Birch. He's doing it. Watch his knees.

Had this clip saved in my Favorites for some time, then finally today I decided to try the tips out. And WOW, absolutely works a treat! My heavy, seeming un-powerful CRF250 Rally popped up in the air no dramas- so long as the timing was spot on. Even lifted the wheel in second- which I never thought possible. So thanks for the tips, they work a treat- even on bikes that you think could never wheel stand.

Haha. Talking about not being able to wheelie due to a lack of power. I remeber leaving school on my old Honda Px 50. It had 1,5 hp, an automatic clutch and a max speed of 25kph.Then while leaving somebody wanted me to do a wheelie. Their faces were priceless seeing that I almost flipped the "bike" over with that little power. But stamping on those (It had pedals like a bicycle) pedals as hard as i possibly could and then almost ripping out the handlebars really did the trick. Although I have to admit that the bike only weighs only about 60 kg but remeber: It only had about 2 hp.

I know you guys know this but your videos are just fantastic! Especially in lockdown! I'm 50 years old, I got into trail riding about a year and a half ago and got myself a CRF250X and joined a local club here in Herefordshire UK. I've been trying to build confidence and skills and your small practical wheelie vid and the tight 'spinning' 180 turn seemed like two really good skills to have in my toolbox. I watched each vid about three or four times carefully noting the key 'dos' and 'donts'. I went out and spent two hours in a field next to my house (with permission from farmer of course!), and in the gravel on my yard for the skid turn. Full armour, boots, helmet, gloves, and water, as seemed like a good idea for a real 'get stuck in' session. The wheelie is coming really nicely and a few more sessions and I feel I will nail it. The skid turn was a great success, after building up steadily to having the confidence to use enough throttle to spin the tyre and use clutch to ease off. Amazing to be able to put your vids into practice they are so full of gen and tips, can't thank you enough. I have subscribed. Only downside is that now I'm sweating like a piglet in a blanket and the bike is filthy :-)

@@crosstrainingenduroThanks for your reply. Yes, it's the last of the carb models (2017). I rode it at the Dave Thorpe Centre in Devon alongside the incoming CRFRX. They told me that the newer model had to have a mapping to make it more newbie friendly but my era bike is perfect for a newbie but you can grow with it as skills improve and never want for anything else. An ex-KTM mechanic told me to snap my CRFX up as they are massively in demand amongst people who know their onions. Needless to say I was told that it was many times more bulletproof than a KTM :-)

thanks brandon but i can't help feeling i'm just too chicken to push the boundaries with feeling comfortable at the balance point and beyond. i probably should have started the slow jarvis-style wheelie three decades sooner when i was dumb enough to not worry about crashing lol.

Since i recently got my suspension done on saturday ill be disling in my weight and ill actually be able to compress my suspension instead of hurting my back everytine there is overhang and i have to sit down but then there is a drop off and all the force goes strait to my back instead of the suspension so im super stoked and this vid was timed perectly for me too thanks

Nice work and thanks for all you help over the past 12 months. Been off the bike for about 20 yrs and in my 40's, purchased WR450 and pooped myself frequently in the early stages but your vids have taken me from being completely crappola rider who spent lots of time cleaning the pants to a semi Gumby who just cleans his bike P.s dont change your style and if your ever over the west coast look us up and i will show you around, should be able to scrounge a bike or two for a tour.

Loving the vids. I am slipping over from road to dirt and these are as funny as they are inspirational. You might have been asked but I can't be arsed looking for it but what model are the Klim grey pants. I like them as they don't have too much bloody advertising. Hate buying something that makes me look like a billboard. Thanks in advance

Figured I'd comment, just to say thanks. Bought a crf450x to practice off roading and stunts. Since I've had spare time, I've been doing well. Manage to keep a 2-8 second wheelie whilst sitting, standing up i get too much wobble from side to side. I also found i tend to turn the handle bars by accident which results in an brutal landing. Still practicing, still re-watching. 🖒🖒

Good video! It nicely refreshes wheelie topic. In our recent training coach explained very similar points for practical wheelies and he also emphasized the need to work on elbows up and wide habit when learning wheelies as it provides more control during subsequent phases for log hoping, etc. I can help translating into Lithuanian although not sure how many more there are watching who don't understand English ;)

+Mindaugas Milašauskas doh, great point on the elbows mindaugas... i've just put an annotation in the video. chris birch kept telling us the elbows should be up and out all the time. thanks for the offer of translating, i'll leave it to your judgment. i suppose the majority of lithuanian riders would have enough english to understand the vids, and I usually try to put enough text and slow motion bits in to make it easier. :)

What timing for this vid. I was out on a ride yesterday practicing this (in what looks like some of the exact same locations on your vid) and it finally all came together. Amazing how little throttle is required when technique is required. Next ride is to put this into practice over logs. Can't wait, was so stoked to finally get it right.

Have you any idea where i might buy one please? + are you still running this sprocket? The 14 t front and 43t rear sounds like just what i want! Thanks for your assistance..... well, you old bastards are pretty damn awesome. Thanks for all the great videos and advice. My buddy and I started riding about a year ago and have progressed beyond what we thought we were capable of in just one year. We watched/watch your videos fairly regularly and practiced what you preached. you are doing more of a service than I think you know! Anyway, enough ass kissing from me. keep it up! If your interested in watching a bunch of gumbies figure this stuff out the hard way over here in Washington State, check out my channel it would be an honor.... mostly. cheers mates!

Hard enduro seems apealing but I only have a heavy nx650 (basically the same as a DR650). Time to learn balance and wheelies, I think it will take me forever but hey, it will improve riding and enjoyment Also I noticed that being good at your own body balance or on a bicycle, helps you ride motorcycles better.

+CROSS TRAINING, ENDUROCROSS & ENDURO TECHNIQUES These days people will go out of their way to be offended so they feel like they are taking some kind of moral high ground which makes them better than everyone else. 'normally your vids are okay but this one sucked big time'. lol
