Holly, that's such a great idea to photo copy the lessons and teacher key! I never thought of that 🤦 I always lug our books around. I'm totally photocopying from now on.

Thanks Shauna 💜 And yes, photocopying is great, because then you can reuse a lot of homeschooling books. You can save money if you plan to use the same book for the younger siblings. I do photo copies with some books that are a little more expensive, that I don’t want to have to buy again.

We took a trip to Arizona during our school year a couple years back. It was really a nice change and I really enjoyed homeschooling somewhere else for a while. The flying did cut down on what I was able to take. We also visited the local library. This was a great video. I wish I'd had it when we headed out to Arizona.

I know what you mean with flying it cut back on what we could bring -- but that made my kids happy -- because that meant I did not bring their math! And yes, that is wonderful thing when you can utilize libraries on trips! 🤗

At least you can plan your trips around your own schedule instead of a school's calendar. After all, a lot of schools don't allow family vacations during the school year because of each state's mandatory school attendance laws. You also don't have to worry about having a truant officer showing up at your door either. Back in April of 2015, there was a guy right here in the Philadelphia area who took his two kids out of school to Boston because he was running in the Boston Marathon. Then all of a sudden, he gets a letter from the school's principal saying that it was an unexcused absence. He then wrote the principal back, and he said that his kids learned more in the five days that they were in Boston than they would have sitting inside of a classroom.

You're quite welcome. Although my school days were back in the 60's and 70's, and I never had children myself, I have done some research on parents taking their kids out of school for a family vacation. According to the schools' attendance policies and state laws, family vacations during the school year are unexcused absences. Although they get breaks during the school year and the summer off, family vacations during the school year are much cheaper than in the summer and on school breaks. A lot of parents can't afford to take family vacations during the summer. They also work full-time jobs as well. Depending on the type of jobs that they have, some parents can't afford to take time during the summer. Plus, they want to avoid the summer crowds as well. Sure they're going to get flack from the teachers and school administrators. But it's the parents who have control over their kids and their education as well. Some of them don't like the idea of the schools telling them what can and can't do with their kids. Even some of the teachers won't give them make-up work either. And it's just not for family vacations either. The schools have to very strictly enforce their attendance policies and the states' mandatory attendance laws as well. They also wants parents to schedule medical appointments after school hours as well. After all, there are doctors who have evening and Saturday hours. Depending on the schools' attendance policies, they only consider illnesses where you have a written doctor's note, a death in the family, or a court appearance, as an example, as excused absences. Plus, if your kids aren't going to be in school that day, you have to notify the school by a certain time in the morning. If not, the school will call you to find out why your kids are not in school. Plus, they'll also take it to the next level, and the school will take legal action against them. I have also seen some stories on the TV news about parents being arrested and going to court because their kids were simply missing too much school. You're doing the right thing by homeschooling your kids. The schools today want to control all of details of your personal life, especially off school grounds Good luck to you in your homeschooling.
