How to do an Irish Roll on the Fiddle: Violin Tutor Pro Tip by Hannah Harris

Rolls are a fairly simple ornament to play as far as the notes go. But the challenge comes down to the timing! Does your roll fit into your tune without disrupting the rhythm? Are you able to fit all 5 notes into a very short amount of time? If you're having trouble with this, then this tutorial is for you!

Hi Hannah. Can you please do a slow tutorial of 'The Morning Dew' from start to finish and building in all the instrumentation. You play it so well but, for a learner, it looks quite difficult...although I'm trying. And, which version are you playing...E minor or Major G scale? It would be great to have the notation and see your left hand etc.

Steven Johnson Hi Steven! It looks like you can adjust the playback speed settings on KZread so you can slow down my playing if you like! Morning Dew is in E minor. I’ll also add it to my list of tunes to re-record. Hope this helps!

@@HannahHarrisCeol Brilliant! Thank you Hannah. I have been slowing it down and can play the basics. Yes, please re-record it when you have time. It's a beautiful tune and it would be great to understand how you play it from the basic form to the more 'jiggy' version at the end. The hard thing about watching somebody play the fiddle is that when you look at what their fingers are doing, it's hard to see whether, for example, it's a 3rd finger playing G on the D string or the third finger playing D on the A string etc and did you just play an open D and then an open A etc, or, two open A's. It would be great if you could just break it down a bit for us novices...And thank you very much for taking the time to reply!

I know I'm asking again, but, please can you make a more in-depth tutorial? I love this tune and you play it so well! There are no 'Morning Dew' fiddle tutorials on KZread as far as I can see. How are you playing your bow hand to get that swing? What sheet music are you using? Sorry...but, please.
