Ойындар

Hi! I’m Ellery Klein. I teach fiddle and violin in Boston after having spent a few years touring round with various groups.
Let’s nerd out on jigs today!!!
Zoom in to your basic jig bowing.
No distracting left hand ornaments, just a solid
ONE 2 3 ONE 23
feel.
Let’s zone out together and try practicing getting this rhythm in our bones & our internal clocks!

Thank you , Elery! This finally makes sense. All the other teachers say emphasis on the first and fourth beat but as a newbie I don’t know what that means! Watching you play slowly helped me understand bowing: long, short, short is a much easier way to understand “emphasize 1st and 4th.” Thank you!

Yes, I wouldn't say the first and fourth beat. There's two main beats in a jig, divided into three microbeats. But you don't tap your foot ONE TWO THREE FOUR FIVE SIX! You tap ONE two three TWO two three. The fancy way to describe this is "compound rhythm," but you can also say "JIGGety- JIGGety"

Thank you for an excellent tutorial - very helpful for one picking up the violin again after decades of inactivity! You apologised for slurring some notes, but in fact I think those specific slurs add beautifully to the character of the jig, and also change the up-bow, down-bow sequence following. Practising without slurring initially could make it hard to later 'undo' the 'up/down' sequence that has become fixed in muscle memory. Your thoughts?

You are fabulous! Thank you for such a clear tutorial! I am practising your suggestions. May I ask - is it best to nail the patterns so you don't have to think about them, before introducing them to a tune? I ask because I tried the pattern (A,DD,A,D,A) and felt okay so tried introducing first on A or second on D and it went pear-shaped 😆
