LOL! I love your no BS approach, and I still learn little tips from you, even when I already know the main subject that you're talking about that. I had to leave the freshwater for beginners group cause there are just to many people flying all over the place with wild and crazy opinions and suggestions and everybody wanted to argue all the time. I would like to add for us planted tank folks that use fertilizer, we have to know how many nitrates our fertilizer adds, and subtract that from the nitrate count to determine when to water change. Example: Tank shows 40 ppm on test strip. I know I dose 15 ppm fertilizer. Tank actually has produced 35 ppm nitrate since last water change. It's all about a routine.

Love the channel! I’m glad you checked that guy on the changing too much water. I change water more than I need to and the fish are fine. It’s a personal choice. I also know they will be fine if I don’t do daily -- as long as the nitrate parameters are at appropriate levels.

@MichaelsFishRoom
Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! But why do you change so much so often?
@brianbuczynski3555
Жыл бұрын
@@MichaelsFishRoom it’s because right now I have the time. And I only have 5 tanks. I have two goldfish in a 40 gallon long and I change that at least 50 percent daily. My betta is in a 3.5 and always dealing with fin biting and fin rot so he is almost always in some medication which destroys the bacteria cycle. Guppies overstocked so just to be safe. I will start texting to know exactly when to do changes but right now I have the time and and easy way to do it and I enjoy interacting w the fish and giving them fresh water. White cloud minnows seam to have most stable tank so they don’t have to have changes daily but I will usually just do bit. I have some new endlers in a 2.5 gallon quarantine (7 males) so I change that daily as it’s so small. But to tell the truth I need to do some testing so I know the parameters and how long I can let them go and be safe. I also followed Rachel o’Leary’s early videos saying water changes won’t hurt the cycle and can benefit the fish. When my ability to do these daily changes I will have to adapt and find new ways. Love your videos. Advice always welcome. Thanks Michael. I joined the BCAC so I hope to meet you there one day!

Also I have really found the fish seam more active and healthier with more water changes. So I think it’s worth it. Since I increased changes I have had no deaths or diseases or issues. Other than my poor betta who gets fin rot when I discontinue treatments. Right now I found tetra lifeguard keeps his fins ok and it’s not an antibiotic so he doesn’t seem to have a resistance.

I change my water way more often then I'd like to as I don't like the look of the tannins my 3 pieces of driftwood create (I know they can be beneficial, just don't personally like It). I'm glad this video showed me that it IS OK for me to do the water changes. In saying that I think sadly I'm going to take out 1 of my three pieces of Wood because I don't really want to be changing water twice a week, my nitrates are never as high as when people would normally change their water and I'm sure my plants hate my constant water changes for looks
@MichaelsFishRoom
Жыл бұрын
You can use charcoal or pureagin to remove the tannins.
I have an established 37 gallon tall aquarium never water change it but top it off when I have a lot of water evaporation my white cloud mountain minnows are just fine and breeding happily but I do have a lot of floating plants and live aquarium plants, aquarium moss and a large sponge filter plus have no ammonia, nitrate, nitrite and if there is any my plants eats it all up

My water change amount depends on the tank. My oscars get 90% weekly. However, I have an understocked, planted 20 gallon that gets a 10% water change monthly. It just depends on the tank, how it's planted, and what my stocking level is.

I guess I suck because I barely change water. Only if my parameters say I need to or my fish are acting weird. And I don't gravel vac either...because I have too many plants. I do maintain my filters, and feed every 2nd day. My tanks are not over stocked either. NOW my tanks are about 2 yrs old..and at the beginning I did water changes every 2 weeks...till the plants got established and I stopped adding fish. I also have a shit ton of plant's growing outside of my tanks (pothos, peace Lilly, mangrove) so now they do the work..but that doesn't mean I don't watch my fish and perform any maintenance. I'm always playing in my tanks ..trimming plants checking equipment..ya know...taking care but enjoying the hobby.

Just as a point of interest regarding the example you gave - you have a 10 gallon tank with nitrates at 20ppm. Two weeks later they have risen to 40ppm so you do a 50% (5 gallon) water change and the level drops back to 20ppm. My question is this - would it be better to do the 50% water change every fortnight or a 25% water change every week. The end result is going to be pretty much the same, you are resetting your level back to where they were to start with, the only difference is that doing the 25% weekly you are only changing the parameters by 10ppm rather than 20ppm.

What is the ammonia? How are you testing? HAve you tested your source?
:P Who in the world does fishless cycling! I never recommend that for beginners --- they can't wait and can't measure the cycle well enough. I normally recommend something like Tetra Start Plus (like it better than Fritz but that works too), a plant that might already be a breading ground for BB, and some test strips to watch nitrate / nitrite for a while. Just don't overstock it and you will be fine. Have started many tanks for myself and others with this method with no real deaths.

I've never had a problem with changing 80 or 90% of my 20 gallon long tank. Never. At least til this last time. BUT THE FAULT WAS MINE. I've been fighting black beard algae for a while. So this time I also took out the wood and some of my larger rocks and my anubius plants. Well I'm sure you know what happened. The next morning I woke up and was having a bio-bloom. I had left behind some plants and rocks so I didn't think it would really matter. But I was wrong. I destroyed my nitrogen cycle by removing a good amount of my biological filtration. So I added API liquid bio microbial stuff (I'm old and can't think what it's called) for 3 days and poof, no more bio-bloom. Damn BBA anyway. I bought 10 amano shrimp and they had all the green algae gone in about a month. But they won't touch the BBA and I was told they'd eat it. GRRRRRRR. Oh I took out the wood and plants to soak in water and hydrogen peroxide to kill the BBA. It worked. Will be adding them back in the next water change.
