This is exactly how a virgin relaxer should be applied and all of the tips and techniques were spot on! Back when I did hair in the 00's I had thr privilege of working in a multi-ethnic salon and I actually learned a lot about relaxers from a veteran stylist named Mary and she applied her relaxers exactly like this and all of her clients had long, healthy, thriving relaxed hair. So relaxers don't have to be super damaging the key is to apply them properly. Although I will say most of the risk of damage occurs with retouch application from overlapping relaxer onto previously relaxed hair. That's the biggest challenge with retouches, the biggest challenge with virgin applications is getting the entire head to process evenly, which is why you gotta work quick!

What if your hair is quite long, bra strap length. Should I relax in 2 stages? Left and right?

@@face-in-the-crowd definitely! Take a plastic shower cap and cover one half of your head, apply the relaxer to one half, let it process, rinse, and neutralize. Then proceed to the other half the same way. The entire process will take longer but you will have much more even processing especially with longer hair where the application process takes more time. That way you won't end up with one side of your hair being more relaxed than the other.

Thanks for posting this video. I had no idea I could use Paul Mitchell Number 2 to neutralise the hair. I have, in the past, tried to look for that information on the Paul Mitchell website but it didn’t state it could be used as a neutralising shampoo only as a clarifier.

She has the same texture as my relaxed hair. You don't see too many tutorials on Medium textured relax hair.

Hello So I wanted to get a relaxer after bern natural for the psst 4 years. I colored my hair last month and I was wondering if is safe fir me to relax my hair. I know you mentioned color or relaxed but no both. Are you referring at the same time? Please advise… Thank you

May I ask...when you say " colored "what are you meaning? Do you mean, using a tint or bleaching? If it's been a month and you've used a permanent tint you should be fine with getting a relaxer and if the hair is healthy. However, IF you've used a bleaching chemical/process...a relaxer is NOT recommended. FYI...there are some professional stylists that will put a relaxer on bleached hair and achieve great results. Again, that's ONLY if that hairstylist, IS extremely qualified in knowing the integral structure of that client's hair and deems it safe to proceed with the correct relaxer and processing time for that type of hair. Ultimately, anything that can strip the natural hair of its natural color, i.e. BLEACHING is NOT compatible with ANY relaxer. The different chemicals in the base of the relaxer (sodium hydroxide) and the bleach (ammonium peroxide) just do not mix. A dangerous combination. These 2 chemicals when mixed together will cause severe hydrolyzation aka...melting of the hair. I hope this helps with your understanding 🙏🏾 🙂

No worries. You certainly can bleach your hair after 8 months. However, only...if your virgin hair (No bleach, I mean) is healthy, there should be no issues. When applying the relaxer try to keep it off of the previously bleached hair. Actually, I recommend that you see a professional hairstylist who specializes in doing relaxers on bleached hair. ​@@skankhunt-zo4fmI recommend not doing. Relaxer can often times make hair melt right off if there's any lightener in it. It COULD be okay if you didn't use any, but I would def recommend talking to ur stylist abt it

hello Suzanne they used THE RELAXER (regular strength) by Paul Mitchell, I personally use this product in my studio. the great thing about this amazing product is that Paul Mitchell has streamline it by putting the strength of THE RELAXER in the hands of the stylist instead of have 3 different strengths (mild, regular & strong) by reformulating it into an all in one strength depending how long (time on hair) you leave it on, leaving you in full control of just how much you wish to smooth the curl/texture pattern. hope this was helpful. be safe. @@exodus_prime I'm a former professional hairstylist. I worked with Paul Mitchell products when I worked in the JCPenney's salons back in the 80s and 90s. I remember using a Paul Mitchell relaxer...but it was in a thick liquid form. The relaxer came in a black and white applicator squeeze bottle. This made the application process so much more easier. The end results were phenomenal. The process was very precise and less messy. There was very minimal burning...if any at all. Of course, I'd follow the process up with the necessary Paul Mitchell shampoos and conditioners. The Paul Mitchell " Detangle " conditioner was my favorite. Tangles were never a problem on ANY hair type. I loved the Paul Mitchell "Tea Tree" clarifying shampoo. I sold tons of it. There was a pomade I'd use on some of my clients..that I loved because it slicked/smoothed the client's hair down i.e. frizziness and added shine. I used the Paul Mitchell " Freeze and Shine" spray when I wanted a secure hold for certain styles. Overall, I loved Paul Mitchell products. Sebastian products were another favorite brand/line of mine in the salon. Sebastian "Shaper" regular strength hairspray was my daily go to for a light hold but still malleable. . I truly miss those days. I'm unfortunately disabled now. I have chronic kidney failure. I pray 🙏🏾 that I can get my kidney transplant one day soon! 🙏🏾 Anyway, God Bless. Can I apply a relaxer on my own hair using my hands only? I mean, like if I was appling a conditioner? I want to relax my hair but i'm scared to use a brush and take so long to finish each section, so my hair may end up overprocessed

My experience, I used to but started using a dye brush and that helped me not touch the scalp. Practice putting your conditioner on with a dye brush and you will see how much easier it actually is. Better yet get a professional or have a friend help. If your very concerned about over or under processing. If you have a lot of hair. Long hair. Sensitive scalp. Any breakage. Have color. Don’t regularly do your own hair. Have trouble using mirrors to see the back while working the back. If your hair is everything to you and any damage may affect you emotionally THEN - have it done at a salon.
