How to Do a Two-Player Magic The Gathering Draft: Winston Drafting!

Ойындар

Winston drafting is a little-known Magic: The Gathering format that lets you draft with only 2 players. It also happens to be my favorite way to play the game!
Subscribe for more! kzread.info...
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Each player supplies 45 cards worth of sealed product (either three booster packs or a tournament pack minus the lands).
2 .Shuffle all 90 cards together in one big deck without looking at them.
3. Choose someone to draft first, then put the top three cards from the deck face down next to it as three new small piles of one card each.
4. The first player looks at the first small pile. He may choose to draft that pile or not.
5. If he drafts it, he replaces that pile with a new face-down card from the deck.
6. If he doesn't draft it, he puts it back, adds a new card from the deck face down, and moves on to the next pile.
7. He looks at that pile and decides to draft it or not, replacing it with a new card if he drafts it, adding a new card to it and moving on if he doesn't.
8. If he doesn't want to draft the third pile, he adds a card to it, then drafts a random card from the top of the deck.
9. Continue until all 90 cards have been drafted. Construct 40-card decks and play.

Thanks for showing off the Winston draft format, Nick! A friend and I were gonna try this several years ago, and were a bit thrown off looking at the drafting rules, and just settled on doing sealed instead. It was great to see how Winston is properly drafted.

caffeinethegathering Yeahhh, when the Winston draft rules are written out, they look super complicated, but when you see it in person, it seems much simpler! That's part of why I wanted to make a video about it.

Of course, but you would technically only need roughly 20 of the cards to be able to form a deck... if you draft stupidly enough. The other player would have 70 cards (not sure if this exact equation would be realistic) and have a much better chance to craft a working deck.

  • @begone88

The way he shuffled, you would need to do it 70,000 times to be fully random.

Zeeth I find the "go fish" version of shuffling is the easiest way to actually get cards thoroughly randomized. But you have to have a very soft surface to do it on so the cards don't get scratched up.

Drafting is my favorite form of magic!!! My friends and I made up our own drafting as well. We had a big box of commons, uncommons and rares. We would decide before hand how many of each type we wanted to draft. Some of my favorite games were all rare or all common drafts. We would then use various experimental methods to draft. We did use this one as well. Instead of a trade binder with tons of rare cards, we had the rare draft box ^^. Totally worth it!!!

Huge Magic fan. Literally Winston drafted my friend's cube last night. A few other interesting ways to draft with fewer than eight players: Grid draft. Make a 3-3 grid of face up cards (randomly), and then a player takes a row or column, then the other player gets a row or column, noting that they might only get two cards, since the player before them already took some of the grid away. After these two picks, make a new grid, trashing the unselected cards. There's also solomon drafts, which are a great four-man format. Open a pack, and then split the pack into four piles face up. The player to your left takes a pile, following clockwise, and you get the pile left over. Then the next player clockwise opens a pack, and the process repeats. Three packs per player.

Do you draw the lands too? Or do you add them freely after you drafted all? Also, I don't have boosters, I have a big collection of old cards though, I want to play this but I don't know what cards should I place in that 90 pile, how many colors, if I add lands, or not. Not to mention what cards should I place. Minions? Removals? Duals? Random?

That depends! Every single booster since Shards of Alara has contained exactly 1 basic land and 1 'marketing card', neither of which you want in your draft pool. That said: if you're drafting with old, pre-2008 product, it's definitely worth being careful about!

  • @babylonian

Yup, you take the whole pile. So, for instance, if there are 4 cards in the pile, you take all 4 of them. (You don't have to actually use with every card you draft, btw - so when you take cards that aren't in your color or whatever, you just set them aside during deckbuilding, and that becomes your sideboard.)

  • @babylonian

    @babylonian

    8 жыл бұрын

Yup, that's correct! In most winston drafts, both players won't end up with exactly the same amount of cards (although it'll be close!) The thinking is: if you have fewer cards, it's only because you chose to select individual powerful cards over the bigger stacks full of cards that neither player really wanted. In the end, you'll both end up building 40-card decks from the cards you drafted, so it doesn't matter all that much! Hope that helps!

It's so dumb that people seem to think drafting "require this and that many players" You can winston draft on 4 people too, easy. You can sealed booster draft on 3-4 people too, easy. Why the hells bells fu**s do people say you need 7-8?! When I winston draft with 4 people for example, you chose to put 2(!) cards instead of one down into the three piles. Then when you need to refill you slap two new ones down. But still only one per "skip". And if you don't pick any pile, we use to look at the top 3 cards of the pile, pick 2 and put the leftover wherever you want to.
