It may be easier to use a spoon rather than a butter knife. Just a small spoon, though. Hold it against the material on the side the prongs are coming out and the spoon will (should, atleast) fold the prongs as you're pushing the stud through. Just an idea, though.

I used to do that when i was 15 on my jean jackets, jeans and even dr martens hehe! I also used to take leopart print material, cut my jeans everywhere and sew the leopart print on the holes so it can make a really cool effect.

Hmm, do the stud secures ever poke you when you wear your shorts or do the folded in edges lay flat enough not to bother you? I wonder if it might be a good idea to sew on, or if someone hasn't done this yet secure the studs, under a layer of fabric?
