How To DIY Concrete Weight Plates!

By no means should you buy everything from the “concrete weight supplies” it is just a bunch of stuff that I used or had. Feel free to take this concept and make it your own! You’ll appreciate making these things with your own hands every time you lift them! Thanks for watching you hooligans!

I'm in a process of making my own weight plates, we don't have these molds in my country, so I had to use a 3d printer and solidworks to design the molds. I decided to mix my own concrete mixture, because I want my plates to be strong and serve me for a decade or more (since I'm putting so much effort to it, might as well do it right.) Most pre made mixtures are not really good (they have too much sand and not enough of cement), I did a 150mm test cube with my mixture, to know the density (weight of my particular mixture): 1 part of best cement (Portland cement CEM 1), 1.5 parts of sand, I used two types of clean (children grade sand for playground), 0.1-0.2mm and 0.4-0.8mm fraction mixed 1:1 by volume. 2 parts of white marble stone 5-10mm fraction. These main things were measured by weight. Finally 1% of fiber and 0.48-0.50 parts of water in relation to cement. (i.e if 1 kilo of cement was used, I would only add 500ml of water.) So little water was enough because most of the mixture is stone, which does not wet anyway. My concrete cube was like a rock after just 8 hours. The key to good concrete is to combine particulates in very complementary manner, so that finest cement locks-in with larger sand particles, then all of it locks-in with even larger sand, and finally all of it attaches to stone and wire mesh. My test cube happened to be 8.06kg (after 1 month under water and another month of drying), which is 2388kg/m³, adding it to solidworks I got the needed height of my plate (for 25kg it turned to be 68mm). The only thing left to do is to actually make the plates :)

I've had this 45 lb mold for 2-1/2 years . I made 30 plates so far for myself and friends . 1/2 gallon of water = about 4-1/4 lbs . per 40 lbs of concrete . Release Spray will ALLOW the concrete to come out of the mold EASIER . REBAR is NOT a good choice for this type of project. I used Plastic / Nylon Garden fencing . 2 layers( 1/3 & 2/3 ) as yuo yuo fill the molds. EASIER to use a cheap Palm sander if you don't have one INSTEAD of wasting time " hammering " out the air bubbles . Concrete than this thick 3-5 days at ROOM temp ( covered in Plastic ) 24 hours is avg Before sealing . 3 layers . let each dry layer dry 24 hours . Then let each plate ( CURE ) for another 2 weeks. IF yuo have 3/4 " stall mats or thicker YES yuo can deadlift . ONLY issue is the CENTER PVC insert getting loose from impact. HEAVY duty liquid nails in a tube ( AND use after yuo remove the mold )

Dude thanks for the insight! I didn't even think about the sander to get air bubbles out! Nor did I think about quick release. Good looking out!

Thank you! Yeah so I used a rubbing brick which you can think of like sand paper but for concrete. They are found in the concrete section at your local hardware stores next to the trowels. Then I also used a weather proof sealer or sealant which just helps protect the concrete from weather since I kept these outside! Happy lifting!

I just saw that! You should look autumn made In the USA or Stix and Stone. Also check out amazon! Since I’ve made them there’s a couple more companies who specialize in the molds! Or try using a 5 gallon bucket or other cylindrical shaped molds!

Looks like Caveman Weights is out of business. No responses to emails for months, and out of stock on everything. Bummer. I was going to order all of their molds. No one else has the same quality at a similar price. :(
