How to Distinguish Between Female and Male Elephants
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
Senior Carer Owen Dube shares insight into how to tell female and male elephants apart, with Zindoga as the male example and Kumbura as the female. Little Timisa also moves into screen. Carer Last demonstrates male characteristics with Mambo the bull.
Learn more about how to identify an elephant's gender with these tips: males have rounder foreheads compared to females who have more angular foreheads. Males' tusks have a wider space between them where they come out, compared to females who point forward more. Male tusks are also bigger at the base where they come out, supporting their larger trunks, compared to females, who are smaller.

What wonderful teaching assistants. They sure enjoy the extra interaction with their carers and friends.
Every video I try to identify each elephant. So far I can recognize Timisa, Mambo, Fishan, Khanysia, and Lundi.
Such a beautiful and majestic animal. I can't understand how anyone could harm this amazing and intellegent animal. Just looking into an elephant's eyes leaves me speechless and in awe❤🐘❤🐘❤

You would have to have no soul to feel nothing for these wonderful animals it takes years for them to reach their magnificent peak and it only takes a second to stop I cannot imagine what these people are thinking when they look through the sight of gun.. I have to admire the trust that the carers have earned with shear patients and kindness bless them all. Xxx
Very informative, thankyou. The tusk positioning was a real help, hadn’t heard that before. Mambo is such a ham, he is the perfect runway model!

Yes, he was a lot more patient than Zindoga. When Zindoga started running away I was thinking they should have used Jabulani as their model. 😂😂
Very nice when the carers are explaining the elephants. Thank You Owen

Congratulations to all caregivers for this magnificent mission is a privilege to work with these incredible regulations
I never knew you could tell the sex of an elephant by the shape of the forehead and tusks how thick they are. Thank you for sharing this information. ❤️❤️
The HERD elephants are so comfortable around their carers - very well explained and it helps a lot with getting to know them better - thank you - great video-
Mambo was so well behaved and would be interesting to know how he ended up with similar split in his ear as his mama Lundi. On same side too. Thanks Owen and Last.
Very interesting to learn more of these beautiful and incredible creatures. Thank you 😲

Bingo, Shell-Shell! 😄 But the explanation was very cool.
It continuously amazes me how you know all elephants by name. It seems to me that you see individual faces, characters and mannerisms of the elephants, whereas many of us ignorent people have to search for different physical characteristics. In any case I am very grateful for the work you do and especially for the fact that you take time and effort not only to educate us but also allow us to enjoy watching the elephants during their dayly exploits. That was an excellent close up of Mambo. That was, also, a good Elephants lesson. Have a great day Jabuloni herd.
Love how Timi backs away and says “excuse me but I want no part of this demonstration… bye…” 😉
Thank you so much Owen you are a good Teacher because you tell this in a wonderful wayI can tell it to the children school groep for 2 years old children. So they can make a draw. How nice is this. My grandchild is 18 month and let her see how wonderful the elephant is.
What a revelation & educational explanation. thank you
"I've had enough," and he just wanders off. :)

Very informative!
Thank you for explaining the differences.
Very interesting. I love your teachings.
Thank you for the explanation, Owen! 👍
Thank you so much! This was really interesting. I also like what it says on the back of Owen's shirt, "A Soulful Safari Experience." If I ever get down to South Africa, I will come visit you guys for sure 💗
Thank you Owen and Last! and Adine of course! I loved hearing and learning of the differences between the Girls and Boys, that will help me future when i’m trying to figure out who i’m looking at in the herd! love you all!
Loved this! 💕
Thank you, Owen. I'm finding that with the information you teachers provide us I can slowly distinguish the different elephants, by size, the way they walk, distinguishing marks (Lundi's ears) and it is all very interesting. Another new thing I learned today was the way the tusks grow. Keep up the lessons, we appreciate it!
Thank you, Owen, Last, and Adine! I look forward to every video and love learning about the herd. Do you know why there's a difference between male and female foreheads? ❤️🐘❤️🐘❤️🐘❤️🐘❤️🐘
A big hug to this wonderful man and to these wonderful elephants and to all the others
Thank you! I enjoy learning new things about elephants every day. I'm 71 and have loved elephants my entire life and now I can (because of your excellent teaching tools) share this great information with my young relatives. The more we know.....
Mambo was very happy to help show you his head and tusks. The other's looked like they were saying "Stop it. That tickles."
Ohhh!! For SURE now that he's pointed it out, I can see a CLEAR difference in the shape of their heads. Very distinct difference between the two. Females are more square for sure. Yep, I can see the difference in the tusks too, which I'd never noticed bfor.
The elephants cooperated pretty well. 😊
I send my love to that beautiful African elephant,I hope he enjoyed his meal in that African safari.❤️❤️❤️❤️🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘.
Thank you for that easy to see and understand explanation of the male & female differences. Fun and informative.
I like the uniforms the staff wears. They always look so smart, tailored & professional.
Thank you Owen and Last. This is very helpful. I love these educational videos. I learn so much !!!!
Very interesting, indeed. I've wondered how some people can always tell at a glance what the else's gender is. Thanks, Owen! It was a good and clear explanation.🙏💞🐘🐑🌿
The elephants🐘 was like, "Can I just eat in peace!"lol 😆
Mambo like, “I got dis. See how handsome I am.” 🥴🥴🥴
Mambo is a ham!!! Love how he is so happy. She doesn’t stop eating even though he’s the Star.

They are so beautiful just like the care taker team is so full of love with these elephants especially Khanyisa with her smart self growing up so fast with herd , the lovely sheep too. 🐑🐘🐑🐘🐘🐘
Elephants are like, we tryna eat here ...
The Elle's are so beautiful and very civil. No matter what or why you care doesn't matter; just do what you can and help them survive peacefully. They have their needs, too. We all have to do what is best for them and their future. God bless all of the herd family and the Carer's taking care of them🐘🐘🐘
Mambo has beautiful eyelashes 💖💖. I have a soft spot for the bulls of the herd 😍. Sending love to all Ellies and humans at HERD.
Thanks for that information now I can look for those differences
The tusks direction is for me much easier to see, if the elephant have tusks.
Great teaching video. Thank you for using beautiful Kumbura as a model. Now have a better understanding of females and males. The trust between herd and caregivers is amazing!
Great lesson to help us identify the elephants. Mambo: Is this my good side or should I face the other way??😂
Thank you Owen, Adine & Last for the elephant lessons! Enjoying the beautiful herd & learning more about them❤️🐘❤️
Thank you, Carers Owen & Last for your valuable lessons. I simply love our Little Timisa’s Tiny Tusks! 💖

Beautiful ellies modeling their physical characteristics for us.💗🐘🐘🐘🐘💗
Thank you Owen! Another informative and learning lesson about these beautiful elephants. I had no idea about the difference between their head shapes and tusks.
Thank u, Owen and Last, for the excellent information about the differences between male and female elephants. U r both wonderful teachers! Kumbura and zindoga, Mambiwas a natural in her supporting role
Timisa became a bit scared of Owen. Maybe she thought he was going to corral her or something...😉❤
Kumbura was a little skittish. Zindoga tolerated the touching for a bit, but then said "Times up". Timisa was like. "what's going on?". And then Kumbura came to check on her. I sooo love them all. 💕
Male or female, they just are not feeling you today 🤣🤣🤣...... Great job though...I got a better understanding. A GREAT TEACHING OPPORTUNITY!!
Finally I think I understand the rounded/angular description. Thank you❤💞🐘💞 very interesting about space on width of trunk. Good for sparring 😉right Mambo 🥰
Thank you for sharing such great info with us. Having worked w/various animals in my life, I tend to immediately pick up on the sexual dimorphism between male & female of animals.
With my new knowledge I will look at previous videos to test it. Thank you to the carers and their elephant assistant for this new informative video
Very interesting. I wish you the best and best to all of these beautiful animals.
Thank you for these very informative ways to recognize a bull from a cow You have chosen the most beautiful specimens of teenagers to make the demonstration the two sparring friends Mambo and Zindoga and the sisters Kumbura and Timisa
This was wonderful. To see these magnificent beings up close and then to have a class about recognizing female and male elephants. Thank you so much and I hope there are more educational classes.
I wonder why the foreheads are different? But I can totally see it.
thank you for protecting these magnificent animals. african elephant is the most beautiful animal on this planet.
Fascinating, thank you Owen and Last, very clearly explained 🙏😊 The elephant models behaved well... up to a point 😁 Mambo clearly loves being on camera 😄 Love the close-ups of these gorgeous creatures 💖🐘💖
Great job with the differences. I never knew the rounded forehead versus a more pointed or angled forehead!.. it was very pronounced once that was called out! Thank you all!
Claudette: Owen it is a delight learning from you. When I was there you were so special and I loved hearing from you--I miss you and here you are teaching us more! And how I love seeing more of Kumbura!! And yes I have learned to appreciate marvelous Mr. Mambo--Thanks for all that you do for these wonderful elephants--I want to be back in South Africa at Jabulani with all of you. It was/is such a wonderful loving place to be. So I will keep learning with the videos and be able to see more on my return!! Love and Light to all of you at HERD
I do believe Mambo doesn't want us to guess.
Thank you so very much for explaining the difference between the males and females elephants and I really learned a lot as I was listening.
