    Excellent video!! Please keep making these videos. I often wondered how to cover brick walls in homes or building made of cinder block or bricks such as these. This is apparently just one of the many options to cover brick structures. Also video was straight forward, no b.s. and looks simple.

    There are a few reasons we sheet horizontally in Oz. 1 in a typical application the horizontal sheets oppose the studs, making the whole construction stronger (same on ceilings, external cladding, roof sheets etc) its basic engineering. 2 You're working at 1200/1350 off the floor in most cases making it way faster/ more comfortable than reaching up and bending down. 3 Butt Joins... are eliminated by using longer sheets 4. (most importantly) Take for example a 6m run down a hall/ceiling where there is a lot of light thrown (glancing light) - 2x 6m horizontal sheets leaves 1 joint taped and set in contrast to 5x vertical joins to show up imperfections. light is the first thing to consider in any situation and carpenters should always consider and frame with the plasterers in mind.

    OFC, a horizontal orientation increases its raking strength. But it also needs to have stagger the joints and glue applied too. So like it or not these are just basic engineering principles. And its just common sense for anyone that takes the time to think about it objectively. That can be applied for most types of construction. And on a separate note if the gypsum drywall is then replaced with magnesium oxide wallboard. It will add enough raking strengths to make it more practice to replace wood based sheathing ie OSB or plywood with ridge foam sheathing in most cases. But check with a licensed structural engineer to be sure in a particular case.

    @@nc3826 Everything should be glued and staggered. It's just common sense, but unfortunately, in some cases, people don't think objectively.

    Use masonry cement not cornice cement. Both are gyprock products. Use the olaster dobs closer and apply them so it sits off the wall to make up for uneven brick work. Make sure the mix is on the thicker side but not too thick it looses stickiness. Some where around soft serve of thickened cream. Dont apply too much force when slapping the board flat with straight edge. If you dont have a background in a trade i would recommend trying to do it yourself. It might cost you more to redo then to have it done professionally from the start.

The company recommends installing timber battons to screw the wall boards to but this seems extreme to me. Could we use an adhesive instead and if so what would you recommend? We are only going 900mm up the walls and plan to install top and bottom moulding over the wall panels and they only require adhesive. Thanks in advance!

I'm going to be doing it with an aim to soundproof the wall as much as possible. Would it be best to use a stud wall and have sound insulation between the brick and plaster? Totally new to DIY!

    Hi I’m a DIY beginner. Have a few questions: 1. I’m ensuring the plasterboard doesn’t touch the floor to avoid damp. But this means there’s a little void between the floor and the external wall - is this ok/normal? We have an old solid wall house from the 1900s 2. What’s the name of the bonding coat you used? 3. What’s your view on using a plasterboard adhesive instead or a “bonding coat!?

  • @kinetic1259

    @kinetic1259

    Жыл бұрын

    1. The bottom is covered by the skirting board. 2. Gyprock comes in base and top coat. The top coat is a bit finer. 3. Gyprock is a commercial name for plasterboard. 4. Not sure how this guy thinks he's gonna run those electrical cables behind the wall, so if you need to have cables, you'll need a frame or some furring strips to raise the gyprock away from the wall. This shouldn't be done over concrete without a vapour barrier in-between.

    Raman you can coat your wall with bondcrete which also gives a better chance for it to bond which the cement. Also scuffing back the paint and placing cement on the areas you’ve marked back will also give extra strength and the cement will be able to adhere.

    Not if you pick the mortar lines, usually you can drive a nail into these rather than the brick itself; as it's only temporary. It's not holding weight, gravity takes care of that. It's to prevent the sheet falling over away from the wall.

I don't want to batten it out as it's already a very small area. Previous work looks like sheet was fixed with some sort of cement based adhesive (grey) with nail in nylon anchors. The sheet was completely sound when removed so I see no reason to do differently. However not sure what adhesive was used. JH manual only says to batten it out.

    Hey Pete, yeah for a small section cornice cement will do the trick. Its recommended to look at installing a few fixings as well as the weight of the tiles could cause it to come away from the wall over time. Personally id install with cornice cement marking on the board where your dabs of glue are, the wait until the next day when the cement has cured and then install some green plugs and screws into the board directly over where the glue was, making sure to countersink the screw heads first. Just a few top middle and bottom. Hope that helps!

  • @886014

    Ok thanks, yes it seems like cornice cement is our friend here. I just spoke with a mate who sees this sort of thing all the time and he agreed, manufacturers will say to batten it. From a practical perspective, some masonry adhesive and cornice cement to give it some grab should work just fine, but use some low strength fixing just to keep everything from falling on on your toes while the adhesives go off ;) Cheers and all the best for 2019

The taper would simply walk out if you gave him more work than needed, my jobs he would anyway.

    @@tgk300xx4 'fraid it's true! Saw pictures of a cottage in France just after it had been gutted by fire. Masses of burnt furniture etc all over the floor, still smouldering. All the stone walls had these blobs of something arranged as a pattern all over. Of course, it was the ubiquitous "Dot & Dab" holding up the plasterboards. Nothing wrong with dot 'n dab - but they WILL come loose in a fierce fire. A couple of fixings into the brickwork will keep them against the wall for a few vital minutes. Can you imagine how you'd swear as you try to get to the door blinded and choking with thick black smoke, when you hit the edge of a whole sheet of 8' x 4' lying diagonally across your shin bone?!

    Yes it is safe. Tank the walls first if there is damp, tanking solution painted on, let it dry then dot and dab. If your doing a full room then board the ceiling first, it's much neater finish and once you have done the ceiling you will find the walls a piece of piss.

    Hi James, quick question. I have a plaster wall that has been fixed like in your video, but quite a while ago i am guessing as it is now loose and rattles as I push on it. What would you recommend to fix it - I was gonna drill a few holes and ram as much grip fill or similar as possible. Any thing I need to do to prep the holes etc. The plasterboard is fixed to brickwork.

  • @OurBuild

    @OurBuild

    That's a tricky one, if it's only a few spots I would make a some small cut outs in the worst aras, maybe the size of a small spatular.Then try and apply cornice cement into the area and patch over the holes.

  • @GETJUSTICE4U

    @GETJUSTICE4U

    Drill 8-10mm holes through the board where there are gaps (no adhesive) squirt a spray of water between the wall and board then squirt foam gap filler into the gap through the hole. This will fix the problem once the foam solidifies and cures. Alternatively use wallboard fixings these are special plastic plugs that look like plastic screws. You drill the correct size hole and hammer the plug into the wall. Problem is you have to buy a box of these plugs and is about £45 and you may not need most of them.

    Depending on the structural footings, if the brick wall cracks then the plasterboard could also. But generally the brick won't expand and contract all that much.
