How to Diagnose a Faulty Ignition Coil

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Diagnosing an ignition coin fault on a 2001 Nissan Micra K11 1.0L using an OBD2 U480 diagnostic scanner tool. The engine was running rough so I suspected either a spark plug or ignition coil was at fault. I ran a scan and it showed error P0302 which was a misfire on cylinder 2. To confirm the issue was with the coil pack and not some other problem on cylinder 2, I swapped the coil packs on cylinders 2 and 4 and retested it using the scanner. This time the misfire was showing on cylinder 4 which confirmed that the problem was the coil pack. Turn off the car ignition fully each time before touching the coils to prevent electric shock. Error Codes:
Error Code 0300 (Multiple Cylinder Misfire)
Error Code 0301 (Cylinder Number 1 Misfire)
Error Code 0302 (Cylinder Number 2 Misfire)
Error Code 0303 (Cylinder Number 3 Misfire)
Error Code 0304 (Cylinder Number 4 Misfire)
Possible Causes:
• Improper spark plug
• Insufficient compression
• Incorrect fuel pressure
• The injector circuit is open or shorted
• Fuel injectors
• Intake air leak
• The ignition signal circuit is open or shorted
• Lack of fuel
• Drive plate or flywheel
• Heated oxygen sensor 1
• Incorrect PCV hose connection

I have a misfire on cylinder 2 getting trouble code 0302 on my 2008 Frontier 6 cylinder truck. Opening the hood looking towards the back the plug nearest you to your left (passenger) is cylinder 1, then 3 behind it and finally 5. To your right (driver side) you got 2 nearest you, then 4 and 6 right behind. It just happens that cylinder 2 has a broken 10mm bolt securing the ignition coil. Anyone have a left handed drill bit I can borrow?

When the rpm reaches 1500 revolutions, the engine shakes, whether it is moving or standing, and results in a weak engine torque.. Sounds like dry bearings on either one of your accessories or idler pulleys. Consider the possibility that a bad plug on #2 was causing the coil to overdrive the plug and eventually fail ie replace your plugs also.

This fault isolation technique works to determine if it’s your coil or something else (e.g., spark plug) with cylinder #2. The problem will either move with the coil (as in the video) or stay with cylinder #2. So, if you don’t want to replace all the coils and plugs, this can help find the one thing that needs to be replaced. Of course, this assumes a single fault. If both the coil and spark plug are defective, then both cylinder #2 and #4 would be faulty after the switch. This technique is basic debugging 101 and works great for single point failures that can be swapped and monitored. Kudos to the video presenter, but maybe should have been more specific about what he was trying to isolate (ie, not just trying to determine if the coil was bad).

  • @screwsnutsandbolts

I would say it's more likely to be an issue with your transmission. Have you had the transmission fluid checked recently ?. If the fluid level is too low it could cause hard gear changes. There may be other causes too so it might be worth taking it to a garage to have it checked out.

Each spark plug has it own ignition coil. Called a “Coil on Plug” system. Spark Plug wires and distributor are not used at all. It’s not built in, but each spark plug uses it’s own coil connected to the engine wiring harness that send the voltage, that is directly controlled by the ECU.

Here is a real mechanic. Either you understand how things work or you don't. Another way to check is to add an insulated skinny jumper wire from the plug up and out of the hole to another plug sitting out where you can watch it fire. This can be useful with intermittent misfires under load or only at certain temps.
