    I'll bet getting the shoulder out front also has the added benefit of increasing power. It ensures that torso rotation is integrated into the swing, instead of just the arm movement. When I teach punching, I often tell students "The arm is fast, the torso is strong, and strength plus speed equals power." 3:16-3:24 You can clearly see his shoulders load and turn a full 180˚ on both demo swings.

    Easiest way to fix a jammed contact is to initiate the swing earlier. Surprised Nate didn't mention this

    Not necessarily as people like me who have less than ideal fundamentals tend to always be jammed up because it’s just a habit I haven’t been able to break whether consciously or not.

    That solution alone hasn't worked for me, I've struggled for about a year, and needed a bit more progression and guidance to improve it.

    Great to get back to the fundamentals. The forehand, and backhand, are linear strokes. The racket face extends into the court towards the target. This has been lost in "modern tennis teaching." Too often today players on the forehand focus on getting the racket over the non-hitting shoulder, resulting in a "circular stroke." They miss the linear extension. Their balls rarely go deep into the opposing court. Often they do not reach the service line.

    Thanks Nate. Would this mean the chest needs to be fully open or even past open at contact? There are some teaching that advocate keeping the chest slightly closed, ie facing the contact point and not parallel to the net. What is your thought?

    Great question. The variation of how much the chest closes at contact largely depends on the stance the player is hitting from, ie: Open vs. Closed. Regardless the chest should remain slightly closed at contact. The shoulder will still remain out in front with the chest remaining slightly closed. The only time the chest is fully open is out of necessity when under complete duress and defending a wide ball. Hope this helps, appreciate you watching!

    Great Nate! Amazing video! Gotta a pretty bad habit of leaving my non-dominant arm (right one) stuck along my body instead of following the swing. Any tip? I was thinking about using phones when training with a message in loop that sounds something like this "Don't leave your right arm stuck!!" LoL

    Nate, 1-handed backhand looking nice! Are you switching, or are you just doing the tennis pro thing of doing it just so you can hold balls in your left hand? Also, were you purposely trying to not hit a forehand?

    Thanks Andrew, appreciate the kind words. Made the full time switchto the one-hander 8 months ago due to a wrist injury. Had lots of years hitting a very mediocre one while instructing though so the switch wasn't horribly painful. Def took advantage of getting some extra backhand reps here in this vid, while stepping around some forehands. 😉

    Hey Nate, my forehand is messed up real bad. I am hitting the ball close to the body and I end up with just a top spin, short ball with no power. It has become my default action how can I fix it?

    Weak, damaged wrist. He sometimes uses a product called the wrist widget on top of this. Probably a TFCC injury.

    I'm trying not to be offended with my wrist being referred to as weak and damaged lol. But Yes it's weak and damaged due to a TFCC tear. Spot on!

    Its medical tape to help secure a TFCC tear in the wrist.

    I would like to say I'm Aiden's hero and he emulates me but this was just a happy accident. We both cracked up arriving to the shoot seeing that we had matching outfits. Shame we weren’t filming a doubles segment 😉
