    Pete, maybe try growing grass in a small dedicated spot used specifically for back-up patching, like where you pulled the poa or for urine spots. As for raising the bar by further lowering the HOC @1.75 in, my guess would be better at 2 inches during July-August time frame. Hopefully your irrigation system will be the saving grace. Happy Easter! ~ mike

    My yard hasn't been cared for well last couple years due to too much going on in my life. I mowed it low the other week because it was badly matted and I wanted to just get a fresh even cut to start the year. I mowed it about 2" tall and bagged the clippings. After that the whole yard died, nothing but 2" thick of dense thatch. A couple days later virgin blades started popping through. I have a new yard now, but still unbelievable amounts of thatch. I'm not even going to attempt to "take care" of my yard anything like you do Pete. Not at this point in time. But I have been thinking about renting a de-thatcher to clean up the mess I created the last couple years from irregular mowing. I atleast want to mow it regularly this year.

  • @llamacebu216

    @llamacebu216

    Keep mowing it at that height and it'll kill off the weeds. Roots will eventually takeover the weeds since you're not letting them grow. Just put the side blower attachment on and you'll be set

  • @austinpatrick2682

    @austinpatrick2682

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@llamacebu216 That's what I'm doing anyway just by necessity, don't have time to do anything more. I did have to raise the deck one notch though, I was cutting dirt in several places. My yard was poorly graded and very uneven. The problem still remains, that thatch isn't gonna remove itself. Not untill it completely turns to dirt anyway, I'm curious how long that would take.

    Wow, that's a lot of walking with that Thatcher, at the end of the day my legs would fall off. Not to mention that all of the thatch debris is in a pile that has to still be loaded into a truck. My system I've built requires little if any effort, it's a older john deere 445 with engine mounted turbo bagger unit that has a modified Thatcher unit. The Thatcher attachment is hydraulically controlled separately from the mower deck, I can drop the Thatcher on the dime to precise locations with no effort except to push or pull a hydralic lever, when the Thatcher drops the mower deck instantly sucks up the thatch without cutting the lawn because I have the engine speed turned down just enough to create lift for the thatch to be lifted off the lawn and the deck high enough where as it is not cutting the lawn. Every drop of the thatch which is then collected into the triple bagger unit, once full the bags are tossed into dump truck and ready for disposal. Once on the dump truck it's just a matter of taking the load to my private compost site and flipping a switch to dump the days load of thatch/yard waste onto the compost pile for mixing into topsoil for later use, once the compost and topsoil are ready for sale their is a ****bonus**** because all grass clippings & yard waste debris is mixed into my topsoil are sold as organic composted topsoil which is worth big $$$$ in the organic gardening world... Btw Over aerating a lawn can lead to insect problems as a overly thick lawn leads to insects finding homes between the topsoil and the dead thatch layer which is almost always present in any lawn especially super thick lawns. (This then leads to having to treat the lawn for insect problems)

    You just explained why you SHOULD NOT MULCH mow. Thatch chokes your turf. Bagging is king.

    Your going to have absolutely no issues cutting that low! You got irrigation and know what your doing if Bentgrass golf greens can survive the heat in the transition zone I know your yard will! No way your lawn has the stress of a golf green during the summer! This is going to look phenomenal!

    #PetetheLawnBarber making sure his fade is looking sharp! I hope the reel mow works for you. I really do like the attachments the Allett mowers offer.
