How To Determine Your Skin Type | Dr. Shereene Idriss
Knowing your skin type is the first step in creating a skincare routine that's right for YOU. Remember, what works for someone else may not always work for you! It's all about learning your skin...This isn't always easy considering the external factors and phrases like "normal skin" so I've distilled it all down for you! Hope this helps!

I’m so happy you started uploading consistently! You make learning skincare so much more fun and a lot easier to understand: the way you break it down, pictures, and putting up those big medical terms on the screen. I’m a visual learner and when I see words, it helps me remember information a lot easier.

I used to have oily skin but then I started listening to my dermatologist, Dr Shereene Idriss, Dr dray. Now my skin has a balanced oil and water. My acne has cleared up. Everyday use of sunscreen, retinod, salicylic acid and a nice moisturizer has helped me most (gentle skin cleanser as well). Now I'm 16 and my skin is at its best stage. Thank you Dr Shereene Idriss.

Seriously! I can fall in this specific category! It is sooo flippin frustrating because anything geared towards acne is oil stopping this, drying out that, cuts out sebum there! I don’t need to cut out or dry out anything oil related!, I need to clear up zits AND moisturize my drier prone skin!😭😩

I can't believe it took me so long to find your channel! You give the clearest explanations for everything skincare related. This video has 100% confirmed what I always thought; that I have dry and sensitive skin. My skin will flake even after a sensitive skin moisturizer has been applied. I use a super moisturizing night cream in the morning (followed by another sensitive moisturizer with SPF 30, of course!). I barely use any products and don't even wear any makeup, but I still randomly get facial hives a few times a week (can't identify a pattern/cause). Even just a simple warm shower gives me big red blotches on my neck and neck (no exfoliation or even body wash/soap on my neck and chest). Now I am 32, and struggling to introduce active skincare ingredients such as acids and retinoids . . . more reason to be excited to have found your channel :)
Thank you for the love towards us sensitive skin people! I feel so understood! :)
This was far and beyond the absolute best skincare intro video I've found online. I am finally on a journey to fix my skin issues after neglecting them for too long and this is my starting point. There is so much wrong (condition-wise) I felt completely overwhelmed but your channel simplifies everything in ways that will help me going forward! Next step, IDing skin type. Thank you for these videos! 🎉
I am so glad to have found this video! I have always had sensitive skin with some dryness. I grew up in a tropical island with 70-90 % humidity so I never worried about hydration. When I moved to NYC my skin went crazy! As I have gotten older, my skin has become more dry and sensitive but now it is also dehydrated (despite the 3 liters of water a day that I drink). Finding products to treat all 3 without breaking the bank has been hard and after 3 years of going to a dermatologist suggesting products and regimes that actually caused eczema on my face and chest, I have been desperate. Armed with a more scientific definition than all the research I've done before, I feel better equipped to understand what to look for and how to document reactions and ingredients to avoid. Thank you!
Been a skincare enthusiast for a few years and how come there are no simple ways of figuring out your skin type, until this video! Shocking! Thank you Dr Idriss ❤️ Would love a video on summer skin care routine. Living in a dry hot environment and now getting ready for the harsh summers in India.
Can I just say I love you? You’re so knowledgeable yet practical. You remind me of my sister, who is an rn. When I’m watching you I feel like I’m listening to her give me advice
This video has enlightened me about skin at a whole new level! Somehow lots of things just fell into place and made sense! Thank you for explaining in such a simple way all these things about SKIN TYPE and SKIN CONDITION!
You’re so insightful, I’ve been mistaking my sensitive skin for a dry skin, this really helped me clarify❤❤
I can tell my skin is screaming for help and your videos are so informative! I’m someone who needs to understand the science behind products (rather than just impulse buying what’s ‘trendy’) so thank you!!! 🤩
I thought I had oily skin all through my teens and early twenties, but it broke out like crazy when I used oily-type products. One day I tried the wash your face and wait 3 hours trick and realised I had dry skin - now I treat it like it’s dry and dehydrated all the time and it’s the best skin I’ve ever had! Nice to know that wasn’t just a fluke and it’s actually the right way to diagnose skin type 🧡
Loved this! Would love a video with serum recommendations for different skin concerns! And moisturizer recommendations for different skin types!
So glad I find Dr.Shereene. I have learned so much about my skin from following her in two days. I will make sure to visit her clinic when I go to NYC next time!
Thank you for breaking this down so simply! I definitely mildly sensitive, dry skin. I wouldn’t say either are TERRIBLE, but I was wondering if you could make a video on the right types of exfoliations people should use in general, but also for certain skin types! I love using them cause they make my skin feel less rough, but make my face red! 🤷🏽♀️
I didn’t know how much I needed this video until I watched it! I love the mix of skin types 101 and examples. So glad I stumbled onto your channel.
you are my number one source of skincare information. I love your delivery and straightforwardness! :) I wish I could go to New York to see you.

This is perfect timing for me! Thank you!
Dry sensitive skin here and sadly I used to have oily and such healthy skin until I completely damaged my skin barrier with all kinds of products that were harsh and foods that didn’t do well for me over the years! Now I’m healing my skin barrier with your tips. 🎉 hope it heals soon!
Ok, based on your do nothing recipe I was able to determine my skin type: combination skin. Some areas feel like they are tight and some are shiny. One esthetician told me I had oily skin, another said she didn't believe that. You have done an amazing job for me and my skin. (Following you)
Thank you Shereene! I finally got someone to guide me to my skin type. Turns out I have mixed/sensitive skin.. like you said, middle of my face is greasy and sides are dry. It has been a nightmare! But I suspected it when I used niacinamide and my cheeks burned to the point I had to wash it off… I definitely used too much too. I am right at the beginning of my journey to skin care at 27 years of age. I also love Guidance to Glow channel. I think it’s called that. Like I said I’m new to this and there are MANY names and products to remember.
You make me love my skin, and love skincare, I mean I just started following you and I learned so much in a short time, thank you so much!
Seriously i dont have words to show you my gratitude.... Honestly... The knowledge you deliver NO ONE TELLS you.... Thank you thank you thank you doc

Oh my God!!!!!! I’m saw many many videos and read a lot about this subject, and, with you, finally I understood and find what’s my skin type is! So, THANKS YOU VERY MUCH!!!!!!!!! I discovered your channel recently and I am loving you!! 💕
Timing on this video is impeccable. My skin was for the most part doing well in the summer with my current skincare products. As soon as winter arrived, I started to notice that I’m experiencing minor but pretty frequent breakouts. I usually receive compliments about my skin, even from my dermatologist so it’s frustrating to see my skin trying to fight me now. I literally decided today that I was going to figure out my “skin type” so I can build the proper skincare regiment, accordingly. I really hope I can get this right.

Thanks to this I finally realized I probably have sensitive combination skin 😢 If I just let my skin be I get red on nose and cheeks, dry and itchy around jawline, and oily on the t-zone. If I use the wrong product I instantly break out on the dry parts of my face. Wether it's too drying, fat, or just sensitizing. Feels like a labyrinth to try and figure out what works.

My skin has had no issues with the treclin! No peeling, no irritation. Its amazing going from a time when I couldn't put water on my face without itching/burning.
