How to design an articulated mask (hinged mask/moving jaw)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Little explanation of what you need to use for an articulated mask that opens the jaw using your own jaw. This is the base mask for my Savathun cosplay from Destiny 2! It was 3dprinted after I designed it in zbrush.
Masks can be made from many different mediums such as paper mache, cardboard, (hard) eva foam or hard upholstery foam. For articulated masks to work efficiently it is important the material is non-flexible and close to your skin, across the top of your head and under your jaw, otherwise the movement will be lost. (rest of the mask can be any material)
Your rotation point to be clean, easy rotate and without obstacles, the jaw should be able to fall open on its own if there's no elastic bands or springs to hold it up. Your rotation point should be behind your ear and be parallel to each other.

Thank you so much for this. I've always wanted to know the right way to do it. My Cayde-6 mask does exactly what you said it would do if the articulation point is too far forward, and now I know that's why!

Theres a lot of things to experiment with these for both materials and movement, such as for the wolf mask i extended the hinges to re-use the movement to move the ears as well! But this is just the basics :)

I am an artist as well and people are constantly telling me to get a 3d printer but I'm so old school and not great with technology. My luck is I'd buy it and have no idea how to use it.
