To address some common comments: 1: You copied CPG Grey. Not intentionally. These "rules" have been around for much longer than he or I have been making videos about them. 2: These are not rules. Technically, yes, they are not. However, they are standard design principals that should at least be acknowledged when looking to design a flag. 3: Your Voice. Deepest apologies for not being Morgan Freeman or David Attenborough.

About No 2 - The rules you stated aren't really principles either, not globally agreed apon at least. It was written by some dude in his book and ever since Grey guy found it people just believed it to be true/ guidelines. A good flag is a flag people can get behind, it can have anything in it! Great flag though 👌

Sounds more like a list for criticism of flags and less like official rules because it turns out you're not going to get every country on earth to agree to rules about flags, but it turns out flag nerds have a list about what makes a good flag, a good flag, these are the rules in question, they're more like grammar rules and less like official flag rules. Flag nerds are trying to set out the language of flags!

Honestly, these rules are so overused. It’s really hard to meet all of them and even if you do, it’s hard to keep your flag, unique if everyone else is following the same rules. Just because some guy from the NAVS says that a flag should look a certain way to be appealing, doesn’t necessarily make them rules. Saying a flag is bad just because it looks funny. Doesn’t necessarily make it bad, a lot of flags look that way because of the symbolism and the history behind it. (Unless of course we’re talking about the Liberian county flags).

You didn't break this rule but you forgot to mention it. the rule of tincture. there are two groups. dyes, which consist of red, blue, green, black, and purple, and metals consisting of gold/yellow and silver/white. a dye cannot touch another dye and a metal cannot touch another metal.
@veronicaravello-arceo
23 күн бұрын
Legitimate question, how does one follow this rule exactly? I’m trying to figure it out here. Like even with the American flag, where you’ve got your red and white stripes, which is a dye and a metal being alternated, you still have red stripes touching the blue field of stars. With blue and red being dyes, they still technically touch. I bring up the American flag because it was one that came to kind where it does it’s best to follow that rule while being distinctive, but it doesn’t totally follow it perfectly. Makes me wonder what flags do follow it; simply because I’m curious how they did it.
@CrunkusGlunkus
23 күн бұрын
@@veronicaravello-arceo well this rule was mostly used for tri colors but in the modern day it's best to just have atleast one metal on your flag. the reason tincture exists is so you can recognize your flag in the dark so having atleast one metal should do the trick as those are the colors that are majorly visible.
@RepublicOfChebokstan

This is not true. The rule of tinctures is made for Heraldry (such as coats of arms) it is NOT a rule for flags. The reason one might believe this is because many european flags are designed after coats of arms of thier royal family and thus, since the coat of arms follows the tincture rules, so will the flag. Most flags that follow the tincture rule are based on coats of arms. The US flag doesn't follow this rule because 1- it is not based off of a coat of arms and 2- because the rule of tinctures does not apply to flags. Thank you for coming to my ted talk

This is why these a generally considered guidelines instead of hard rules. The reason they're in place is to make it recognizable at a distance and look good. This means it can break the "rules" as long as it achieves these main purposes. This includes stylizing words or not making it overbearing or not using it to replace symbolism. Of course, as you shown these are guidelines that can be mearly suggestions, but also some of these flags can benefit from change and also following these guidelines.

Personally I’d add another couple rules, you should be able to accurately draw it with a ruler and compass, and it should still be recognisable when the details are compressed down into basic shapes (like brazils flag is still recognisable as just a rectangle, diamond, and circle)
I remember for an assignment in world history we were simulating ww2 using fake countries and we had to design our own flags. My group designed a flag with 3 horizontal striped representing the sky, the mountains, and the fields of our country. Our fake country was based on Britain from what I remember.
A few months ago, I started making a fantasy world in my head, so discovering your videos was a really big help and inspiration to me. Keep up the good work

Literally any flag with a tower on it breaks the second rule.
One more thing, depending on the environment, like what plant dyes are available, make the flags colors based off that. Kinda like how not many flags use purple because it was hard to get until chemicals. This is because I’m assuming this is a medieval sort of technological state in this fantasy world

My favorite desing of a flag has quite the backstory. The Puriklan Empire's flag is a simple red backgroud with 12 golden claw marks assembled in a cercle around the middle, the story goes that a king, who was losing à war, escaped his opponent whilst gripping on the flag of their country so tight, his claws tore through the fabric, but when his advisor proposed to repair the flag, the king refused, saying these scar on the flag represented the people's resilience, that despite the holes, they still held together, since then, and after they took back their Land, the flags have allways wore scratches, though in contamporary days, they are figurative.

Important point: if you want to design a realistic pre-modern flag, break every single one of those rules
Honestly I didn't expect you to draw an actual flag instead of making it a flag
People are starting to move on from the "a 5 year old should be able to draw it from memory" rule and making more intricate pretty designs. That rule can be broken and still look amazing if you know what you're doing.
why does bro sound like he's on the verge of tears
The flag looks nice I design flags as apart of one of my many hobbies, I can tell you I’ve broken these rules a few times but technically these rules don’t really apply it just matters if the flag looks good and represents what it’s supposed to represent

I mean, you can put as many intricate details as you want, as long as there’s enough distinct elements visible at a distance. You could put different patterns in every star on the us flag, and it wouldn’t change the readability at a distance cause no other flags look like that
I seriously love his voice so much
I feel like these are suggestions for "easily" make good looking flags, but not something that if a flag doesnt follow then its bad. For example, nobody hates on the brazil flag, but it has words. What about the south african flag? It's pretty popular, but it has 6 colors instead of the suggested 3. What about all of the tricolor flags in europe or other parts of the world? They don't have symbols and many of them can be confused with each other, but does anyone call them bad?. And yes, not all flags are good, most USA state flags are hated and they dont follow these rules and they could be improved by following these suggestions, but that doesn't mean all flags have to follow them.
FOR EVERYONE: These are the rules he wants to follow, AND he also says that flags DO break these sometimes just chill and let him draw his flags
Nice Job on the flag! I am curious about the resources that were used to make the dyes of the flag in the world setting
These are suggestions and many are broken by real world countries, but ussually its good to keep these rules in mind.
First rule Add on is that languages may not recognize what the text is. And there are always minor exception such as companies, however they need to blend in. Regardless, I love the fact that I see more people using actual rules of flag making.
I need to remake my flag for my sci-fi story and make a bunch more.

Screw kids
Something I’ve noticed personally is that many flags (although there are many exceptions) tend to rely heavily on the rule of thirds, whether vertically, horizontally, or both. Another connection I’m just making now is that this use of the rule of thirds is more common in European or European colonized countries, so perhaps if a country you’re making has it’s culture more based on those of East Asian countries you could reflect that in their flag by giving it a more unique (relative to the rule of thirds anyway) flag design. Another common element in flags are crosses (and “x’s” but they are referred to as crosses anyway), although typically these crosses are based after a saint of some kind, which you could use as an anchor point for when you get to fleshing out the culture and histories of these countries. Lastly, for especially large countries or countries where you already know there’s going to be some kind of regional conflict like a civil war, you could foreshadow that using the flag by taking inspiration from the Union Jack 🇬🇧 , which combines the flags of England 🏴, Scotland 🏴, and St Patrick’s Cross (the flag of Ireland a long time ago, it’s a red slanted cross), which of course are the three kingdoms that united to form Great Britain. Perhaps that can help spark inspiration
These are rules to GOOD flags, some designs are trash, others are so good they can skip a few rules
Maryland really said “screw simple” 😅
Sheldon Cooper ~ presents ~ ✨FUN✨ with flags
If it’s medieval I feel like there should be interesting seals and words. If it’s meant to be heraldry of a magical medieval kingdom it should be wacky
Love how all the rules are broken irl.. *How many countries use white. Red and blue as their primary colors fro flags (and vertical/horizontal stripes alignment)*
Gabon called and said they liked the flag!
And temember, if you're making a fantasy world with multiple countries, color can indicate relationships with other countries. When we thing of red white and blue, we think of very northern countries in north anerica and europe- while red yellow and green make us think of southern ones in south america and africa.
That's a nice flag
Kinda looks like the old sudanese flag whoch symbolizes "the nile flooded the desert, then it was green"
