    Thank you Daz, but how to calculate the shear between the steel beam and the steel plate for specifying welding?

    This is brilliant! I have used 254UCs with plates for cavity walls (either to save on 2 x beams or trying to save head height with a 300UB) but was never confident with sizing the plates. And, never knew about that tedds module. Thanks again Daz, another great video and practical design. Video ideas: raft slab design, timber racking checks, windpost design, roof truss design.

    I suppose you weld these top plates to the I section using fillet welds on either side. When you verify the welds (or determine sizes), do you go by the shear flow or von mises criteria? This pondered me the other day. Keep up the good work.

    for a domestic beam like this I wouldn't really check it, if i had to spec a weld it is a minimum 6mm fillet. tbh, not really sure but if your beam like this example, the top flange is in compression. so you would want to convert that compression force into longitudinal shear for the weld design. for larger projects, we would get the fabricator to design these connections.

    If you'd like to check it then I'd go for the shear flow. Here is a video with that exact calc: kzread.info/dash/bejne/kaWk3Kyxj82smbg.html

    Hi Daz. How did you learn how to do domestic calculations? I did civil engineering so know how to design steel beams and columns but I'd like to learn how to do any sort of calcs for residential. Can you recommend a book or a course?

    If you had an I section (directly supporting an inner leaf) with a boot plate (welded to the bottom flange) supporting a outer leaf of masonry, how would you go about designing it? I suspect you would have to check the section for torsion as there is now an eccentric load acting on the assembly. But how would you go about checking the local stability of the weld? Is that something that you can often ignore in practice?

  • @EverydayDazz

    need to check for torsion and would likely need to add stiffeners to stop the I section from buckling. best thing would be to use a SHS or RHS section. you'd also need to check for rotation instability at the connection or support. welds is typically not something i'd design but you can work out the local force the weld would need to be designed for. i think you'd need to look at the design of the longitudinal shear from the bending moment.

    Hi Bro First thanks for your incredible videos. I need your advice I'm a fresh civil engineer I'm have problems in analysis staff sometimes it's hard for me to imagine the moment and shear and how their behave in the structure. I hope you understand what I mean. Therefore I need your recommendation to improve my analysis sense. My plane currently to see your videos in concrete design staff and maybe it will improve my analysis staff.

    Any chance you can explain how to connect the beam flange to the plate ? plus how do you insert grout between the wall and the plate. and one last quastion- do you assume the wall keeps the beam from LTB ?

  • @EverydayDazz

    @EverydayDazz

    2 жыл бұрын

    you'd weld the plate to the beam. depends how they install the beam but where there is a gap, we typically specify non-shrink dry pack and you basically ram it into the gap to make sure it is tight and that no movement can occur once you remove the props. the LTB resistance would be from the friction between wall and the beam as it is not mechanically fixed. there are equations that you can use to check whether or not the wall can provide sufficient LTB resistance.
