Another great video Dazz... please keep them coming. Will you be doing any Istructe exam questions in the fututre? they'd be so useful to people since no one's doing them on youtube. Thanks for your efforts

Oh wow, it's amazing to see that the wind load calculations presented in the video are so advanced that they even defy the laws of physics! Who needs to divide by 4 when you can divide by 2 and still have a structurally sound building? 🤣🤣😆😆😆🤣🤣

Do you disagree with his assumption that the wall is two way spanning?

Hi would this be the same process for a cavity wall? What wall thickness do you consider?

Hi Dazz. When you did the calculation by hand, did you also determine the ultimate failure load using the yield line method as Masterkey evidently does? This process can be quite tedious to do by hand since it is a upper-bound limit method, where you have to determine the most critical failure pattern. This is complicated by the presence of the holes in the wall. Or did you use another method which you can point to?

Yield line analysis is an upper-bound solution.

    @@SMSBJM1981 yes, my bad. I meant upper-bound.

Absolutely not 😂 don’t have time for yield line analysis. Just a simple assumption that the wall/windows/door can span in 2 directions. Just to get the load onto the middle pier.

Do you use 230mm for the thickness or you make it a bit smaller to take account of the pointing? Not familiar with UK practice.

it was only 230 for the pier portion. the main wall was 170mm thick.

Great example. Its surprising how many Structural Engineers do not check the wall panel for wind loadings. If its the ground floor of a two storey property and with returns I assume that the top and sides of the wall panel are fixed. If I am doing design for proposed alterations then I always add a note for lateral restraint straps. MasterSeries is a great package for masonry panels.

Did you consider calculating the moment capacity just based on the axial load? Could figure out the pier is good by multiplying the axial load on it by the lever arm

  • @EverydayDazz

Are you referring to calculating a bending capacity based on if the axial load was eccentric?

  • @joeycheng6696

@@EverydayDazz Works both ways. Any compression force on your pier will add moment capacity. However in this case, the force is eccentric - therefore will be better. In my opinion it would be more realistic then using mortar tension capacity as that requires an assumption of no cracks in the wall.

It was a solid brick wall. Weirdly build but was what I measured 🤷🏻‍♂️
