That’s how Mexican gardens in Chicago looked like when I was growing up. You made a pot out of EVERYTHING! Sink, buckets, lard & masa containers, tires, etc. We had a water garden made of a bath tub! We had aquatic plants with fish, frogs and turtles

Didn't know this style actually has a name. Its very common here in the Philippines specially in the "baryo" (rural province) as we call it in Tagalog and Waray-Waray language - even the mother Mary in a groto (the arch nook/shelter). The Spanish/Mexican influence from our history makes total sense.

Love this garden... it definitely speaks to a culture that is so a part of the America's, especially in the southwest. Love that things were hand made with what was available. Nothing store-bought could equal the personal and endearing sweetness of these things. I live in Texas, and so enjoy this influence, as after all, Texas was Mexico. We are a lovely mix here and I see this beautiful influence spreading throughout the US. If only we could all see the value in our rich and yet sometimes disturbing history and the natural immigration which continues to bring rich heritage and valuable infrastructure to our nation. Thanks for sharing this part of the botanical garden. I could sit in this space for a while.

This video makes my heart sing. Such a people friendly garden that you can live out your life in. Love that its enclosed too. So beautiful. Its so suited to the climate where i live in Australia and i have seen gardens like this. So sad that airconditioning and modern houses have led people away from creating gardens like this.

I've been in Australia for a few decades but this does remind me so much of the gardens in Arizona and surrounds. It's funny but you see a lot of similarities in some of the gardens of older first/second-generation immigrants from all over here. Not necessarily in the sense of the shade trees but the emphasis on function/food (so lots of fruit trees, incorporating food plants in with the other garden plants), the use of reused momentos incorporated into the garden setting, the economizing of "it's still useful" in various ways, LOTS of pots and finding creative ways that don't cost to decorate the space with handpainted/decorated elements. Pots are cheap and easy to decorate compare to other types of garden features that would cost a lot so easy to do with items you have. It's so much more cheerful than the bland 'modern' grass and yukka stuff that many new estates put in.

The patron Saint of gardening is an Irish monk named St. Fiacre, whose feast is celebrated in my garden, Ireland and France on September 1. 🙏

Being from central Europe, I have never seen such a garden and didn´t know that something like this existed. So it´s very interesting to see 🙂

Oh wow. Making a garden to honour the practices of local communities is such a lovely thing. I haven't thought of this before. I kinda though botanical gardens were about rare expensive plants and that's about it.

Multi-culturalism is nothing new. Almost every food item we associate as "European" was in fact domesticated elsewhere and borrowed from other cultures in the distant past. Unlike Mexico, Europe was never one of the cradles of agriculture, and every one of the major food items associated with European cusine was borrowed (assimilated) from other neighboring cultures whether Africa, the middle east, India or more distant Asia. It was quite natural for Europeans to assimilate much of Mexico's rich food culture, as they had already assimilated the food cultures from across the old world. Even the Mexicans had already likely adopted the use of chili peppers in their cusine from South America. So we see that cultural assimilation (or "appropration" as it is often derisively called) is the normal method of cultural development practiced universally around the world and throughout human history.
