For some reason I can't use the lava asecond time any tips

I did this at level 5 with all my characters close to death, it felt so epic. I had to let that guy Nere die because I needed to rest and therefore couldnt save him, but I got some loot off his corpse. I then had Shadowheart use speak with the dead on him and got a cool scene. Man, I love this game. Im not necessarily the best at it - and I struggle understanding some mechanics - but man is it fun!

That’s all that matters brother. As long as your having fun and enjoying who cares about the things you don’t know yet. Your first few runs aren’t gonna be perfect. Just keep having fun man, even with the mistakes. I made it a point not to reload after mistakes just to see how the story will develop, and I gotta say…it’s way funner not knowing the outcome than knowing everything….that’s what makes games boring

I also just defeated this boss with my lvl 5 team without using the hammer (didn't even think about it :D) A solid tank, some distant DPS to taunt it and a hammer and voilà ! So epic, it was absolutely amazing.

Guys, one more tip: Try to align the others characters exactly on the same spot showed in the video. Because this is the key to smash down and re-heat the robot in the same turn.

You can also one-shot the boss if you've prepared an Owlbear Druid, an elixir of the Colossus, and some way to cast Enlarge. I used a scroll on my druid I left up at the top bridge, then drank the elixir, wildshaped into an Owlbear, and jumped onto the boss. 10,286 damage. I cackled. My friend and I got the hammerless achievement with that.

I unknowingly beat this boss somewhat easily with hasted monk with electric gloves (I think gave advantage). The monk by themselves took like 80-90% of the HP in 2 rounds

What was the difficultly level?

Alternative: if you have Lae'zel you can use Githyanki Psyonics to tripple her jump distance. She can then release the lava, jump to the center and jump to the forge lever, without using Misty Step (which she also has as a racial ability).

Alternatively to this if you have a Ranger one of the spells is to triple any allies jump distance by touching them and this lasts 10 turns. High strength characters can jump stupidly far with this, for example I got Karlach to jump from the valve to the cheese spot. Edit: this also works with Gith, not just Ranger.

You don't even need both of these, I've got 3 characters standing so he positions perfectly and 1 on the valve(for some reason he goes for the people that are farther) and you can just shoot the lever.

I was literally just running Grym back and forth between Lae'zel and Karlach having them shoot him with crossbows with only a 40% chance to hit and doing 1-3 damage per hit. Got him half way from 300hp and then from some reason Lazy decided to bug out and the fight was basically over. I didn't think to use the MASSIVE FORGE HAMMER, I feel pretty dumb for not thinking about it but really love that it worked. This game still keeps amazing me with all the different ways to go about objectives or how to kill mobs/bosses. Thanks for the vid, really helped me out. :)

if u read his resistance u can tell he is weak to bludgeon dmg, u can equip a hammer or mace to kill it. But still, i didn't know that we could use the forge hammer wtf

@@zhengshilin415 Yeah I read that it was weaker against bludgeon dmg, sadly I didn't have any maces or warhammers equipped to any of my party. Also during the Great Forge process my mind came to the conclusion that the forge (The massive hammer) wouldn't be usable until I killed Grym.

The hammer tactic does not work because even if u get him the middle he has to be top of the middle anvil to get a hit on him. Poor tactic and the lava does not hurt him either.

@@Mulberry2000 Yeah, I think I recall that even if you hit Grym the first time with the hammer it will need to be set on fire again with the lava in order to deal damage again (the lava isn't supposed to do damage, it softens Grym's hard outer shell in order to do damage from spells, weapons, and the HAMMER) with the hammer (which for me he just needed to be standing right next to the hammer on the little lip of the hammer surface). So depending on how the game rolls it's movements and places it's model you may or may not need to reapply the burn effect. It can be hit or miss on that part, but the hammer tactic does work and that's how I beat it after watching this video. Even if you don't use the hammer/lava combo there is an achievement you get for beating it the old fashioned way with just burning it with lava and attacking it normally. Either option is fine, all depends on if you want the challenge of killing Grym with grit over time or if you just want to end the battle really quick to craft some sweet gear much quicker.

How it works on video : Perfection. Reality: Lava dont goes out. Melting and hitting him doesnt make a dmg + he spawns drakes. GG

You need to turn the lava lever after hitting him, even if the lava is still present. The hammer instantly removes the superheated condition from Grym, which makes him immune to all damage. So you need to turn the lava lever to add the superheated condition again.

Yeah they patched that out, so after he gets hit the first time with the anvil, he loses his supercharged state and you need to release lava again to supercharge him. Today I heard that yiu can cast heat metal on him to supercharge him without needing lava, but I haven't tried it for myself to see if it works. I'm going to try the heat metal strat next time I play

Well the game is entirely about choices and players learning new ways to kill things, and it's not exactly gamebreaking because it only works on easy and balanced modes

Really recommend to use leizel here, with her chain attacks you can attack lava and hammer lever in one turn, also if you use extra heart turn on her you can hit him 2 times

Great video. For those who are confused, you can make a few slight modifications. If you don't have a character that can teleport, you can shoot the lava valve with a ranged attack. So here's what I recommend: 1) position your characters like in the video, but put someone else near the forge lever since you probably don't have 2 characters that can teleport. 2) enter turn-based mode and interact with the lava valve with your teleporter character to start the battle. 3) with the teleporter character, teleport to the mould chamber and end your turn to lure Grym to that position. 4) end turns until Grym moves under the hammer. 5) with your character near the forge lever, pull the forge lever. Grym should now be damaged and prone, but not superheated anymore. also, mephits will have spawned. 6) with your teleporter character, either teleport back to the lava valve and pull it, or else just get away from the boss and shoot the lava valve with a ranged attack. 7) with your other characters, go ahead and attack the mephits with ranged attacks since you'll need to deal with them eventually. 8) end turns. 9) repeat steps 5 to 8 until Grym is down. 10) profit.

was looking for a strat.. then realized you have this in like storymode.. so yeah.. course its easy .. on to the next hopefully useful video..

Definitely more cumbersome, but I abused the Command spell with my hasted cleric tav to just keep making them "approach" me to either get in the lava or get under the hammer. Did this on tactician, so command was also good for stopping Grym from wiping my party with quake attacks (since when commanded, a creature obeys and does nothing else).

This worked great! Thank you!

Using this strategy you can skip the boss (tried 3 times it really does work): position all four characters exactly like the video (one character should be right next to the hammer) BUT use a mage hand to release the lava AND right after you hear the clicking sound dismiss it. The boss doesn't trigger.

People also forget the easiest way to do it the spell "Heat Metal" you dont even have to move it brings his entire body to a super heated not just the legs and its 100% hit always because hes full metal.

I ended up just giving my whole party hammers I'd been hoarding to fight him after noticing Shadowheart take a good chunk of health out of him with a mace and realized how big that bludgeoning weakness actually was.

Past haste on whole party as well. Also, you can position someone on that rectangle platform next to the crushing platform from the beginning and have someone invisible pulling the lava lever next to the door so they don’t aggro the grym and he still goes for the person next to the smashing platform. You can also hit the hammer lever with arrows.

Thank you for the tip, it was so easy! I tried doing it just attacking him but couldn't finish him off. Btw you can just shoot the wheel to activate the lava and the lever to crush Grym with a bow, i didn't have misty step and it's even faster.

Equipping two brawlers one with a big war hammer and the other with the newly forged adamantine long sword while CC'ing (mostly spamming slow on him and haste on the brawlers) with the other two made quick work of him. Would have gone with the mace but I'm not using Shart and wanted the longsword for later. 300 HP isn't much to chew through. Was intending on using the smashy forge but getting Grym on the crucible was a pain in the butt. Didn't realize its hit box could smash him while not on it but near it. Only ended up fighting him twice. Once to learn that you had to keep him in the lava and to use bludgeoning damage. Second time, simply pasted it--I think he got off two or three attacks total. Easily survivable @ lvl 5. Any teleport or invisibility scrolls gets "prime target" out of dodge and rotate. You get an achievement for not using the forge hammer. Something for the completionists out there. Also when you don't use the forge hammer to hit him, only to make the weapon, those elemental fliers don't spawn. The 10 elemental fliers fight while going after the Mythril vein was much harder largely because I only had one fire resistance potion at the time. Doing the fight at lvl 4 or less, yeah, would prob need the forge hammer. Lvl 5 is when almost all D&D characters actually become the adventurers as intended. Has been true for aeons.

Using the forge on him was my first attempt but I had no idea about the "superheated" thing lmao tysm!

For anyone still struggling, have one person at the hammer lever - that person can reach both the lever and the wheel with an arrow. Keep the others within shooting distance of the lever. Arrows will move it. Once you get the boss down the first time, chances are you'll need to hit the wheel to get the lava to flow back in, this will supercharge the boss again. You should be able to then hit the lever one or two more times to bring down the hammer and kill him. You can ignore the bothersome demons that pop up for the most part as the damage isn't too bad.

I often have the bug that the lava just vanishes for no reason and then he isn't heated anymore when he gets close to the forge.

I struggled with bugs on xbox, i used mages hand to start the initial lava, once i hanmered Grym, the lava bugged and didnt «disappear», as such, i was clueless to the fact that the lava was gone in the game engine and that i had to turn it back on again. But once i used the misty step and used the character to turn on the lava, it worked as intended. Thanks for the video

I don't know if there was a bug into it, but it seems that sometimes, when you launch the fight, even if Grym is overheated, the debuff doesn't apply on him, I thought it was normal at first until I restarted the fight one or two time to realise that he now get the debuff he normally should get. I don't know if I was the only one having this weird bug or just my mind playing tricks.

it can bug out if you quick save in animation, then you cannot use the valve anymore somehow, if so just go back before he spawns, it took me a while to fix this....

TY! this helped me a lot. I had to kite him a bit since he decided to NOT stand under the hammer at first 😅🤣 I just used Gale, Astarion and Shadowheart, whereas Me (druid) and Gale was the only ones with misty step, Still made it, but probably a easier way to do it 😅.

@@MidoriGa95 I managed to resolve it by returning a save. I noticed this bug happens when I use F5 to Quick save during the cutscene. If saving, do it before or after the cutscene.

Soooo two things. My lava never goes away and second the lever just says it's blocked

Thanks for your video. I modified your strategy and it allowed me to do it almost exactly the same way, but I only needed 1 Misty step. The key is to place 2 characters in Sneak on the Forge Lever platform and a third character in Sneak on the Lava Wheel. You then use a Misty Step character to click the Lava Wheel and MS to the center. Everyone ends their turn and the boss comes to the middle (the hammer). Now you use your stealthed characters and take turns between letting more lava out, and then hitting it with the hammer. I was able to kill the boss on Explorer with 3 hammer hits and the boss never moved after he got to the center.

Everything else wasnt working. this worked first try, i think the key is to always pull the lava wheel, even when lava is still on the map.

I didn't even know you could do this. I just had Karlach throw hammers at him while everyone else buffed her. Her throw build is freaking OP.

Boss stopped ON the hammer for me, so when I hit him once he was prone ON the hammer and NOT touching the lava... fucked up my whole game because I saved at that moment.... can't beat this dude because he won't go in the lava AND go back to the hammer. He moves about 1.5x the distance he moved at the beginning and you can't predict who he will attack (even when it says "primary target" he'll attack ANYONE else). Might have to start my monk run all over again...😢

The golem didn't move a single step in my playthrough and had to get my whole group around him to pummel him to death, it took ages and the achievement added salt to the wound.

Or just Karlach with a hammer lmao. It also only targets the last character to hit it, so you can just ping pong it across the arena with cantrips and bolts, always letting it chase the person far away

This strat is good in theory but in practice it never works due to Grymm not putting himself in a position where he can be BOTH superheated by lava and hit by the hammer. Here's what I did: 1. Follow the first half of this video up until you hit Grymm with the hammer for the first time. Use a ranged attack on one of the grouped party members to activate the lever instead of Misty step. A good tip is to quick save before you activate the lever so you can save scum until you get a hit roll on the hammer for over half his health (150 or more hp). 2. Grymm will get knocked prone and imps will spawn. Keep your grouped members together and on the platform furthest away from Grymm, opposite the lava wheel while you deal with the imps. Move your stand alone character (the one who activated the lava wheel) from the mould back toward the lava wheel and activate it again using Misty step or ranged attack. After activating the wheel move them as close to Grymm as you can without standing in lava. 3. Grymm will wake up and head toward your stand alone member who is the closest, walking through the lava and getting superheated again. He will probably hit them for some damage but this is okay. 4. Move or Misty step your stand alone member back to your group who are still located opposite the lava wheel. After your turns (either spent dealing with the imps or skipped), Grymm will walk towards your group, putting himself back underneath the hammer. 5. Quicksave, then use a ranged attack to activate the hammer lever. Again, you may have to save scum several times until you get a roll on the hammer for half or more of Grymms hp. This just ensures you can kill him in two hammer hits instead of a potential three. Congratulations, he dead.

My tip, have 3 wait on top by stairs, drop one down to operate forge. When robot appears shoot from height and move bottom character around to avoid attack. Use all spells to put image on piston and activate with arrows

Its not working for me. I hit him with the hammer once, open the valve again but he doesnt gain superheated right away as it did in this video. He walks away from the hammer and only after that gains superheated. Have to figure somethinf out

I can’t turn the lava valve back on?? I’m on ps5. I just can’t interact with it

needed an additional turn for a third strike on honour mode, but still worked like a charm! just make sure to keep the lava up

I figured out that you could just kite him by being on opposite sides of the map and taking turns on which side gets the last hit. He will just keep walking back and forth in the middle while you hit him with ranged attacks. Have your STR-based melee-only character (aka paladin or fighter) hang out at the lava valve.

Much simpler tip- cast sanctuary on your lava puller so they never have to move and Grym will walk right by. Position the others as the video shows, and shoot the forge lever to trigger bonk- repeat before he gets up! Perhaps Blink will work in place of sanctuary? I’ve not played with that spell yet

Just put somebody near the lever and lava valve to press them, the guardian only goes after whoever attacked it last.

Tipp Gale and Will are Humans and both are there for proficient in shields and light armor. Especially the sh8eld adds a lot of survivability to gale!

I'm so incredibly frustratred... Every time I get the first hit done he doesn't stand in reach of the lava anymore when i get it flowing... So the next turns he just dances around, overheated but not coming anywhere close to the middle anymore and wrecking my companions to shreds.

You can also shoot the wheel and make it turn to get the lava flowing good luck every one!

Can confirm, still works. Did it on my Xbox just now. I had trouble getting him into the right position at first but I just moved myself closer to the slammer on the mold. Also, use ranged attack for the lever

Had to look up the anvil after getting an achievement for not using it. Didn't even think to do it. Threw a hammer on my paladin, hasted him and got to swinging. Definetly would've been a less rough fight using this big thing!

his overheat resets after the hammer hits and its hard to get him to walk in lava and then back down the hammer 3 times

This doesnt work, or atleast it didnt for me. The hammer damages him for half health, but it won't let me hit him with it a 2nd time. It does no damage :(

It still works. I had problems with it as well at first. Make sure that Grym is superheated before you drop the hammer on him (he’s superheated when his legs are glowing). I had to to turn the valve twice in a row to achieve that. Apparently the level of lava wasn’t high enough…

Can you do this while only having 1 companion on your team? I do a Astarion and Durge Tav only run and the golem always just misses the edge of either the hammer or the lava by pixels lol

I positioned the party like displayed in the video, Grym died next to the small thing that's used to insert the source material and blocked it, I couldn't use the forge a second time. So I reloaded a save right before the start of the fight and moved the characters in a way that made Grym move to the opposite side where he's died before. The basic idea is the same as in the video, just try to lure Grym to move to the other side of the thing that can smash him.

Playing on tactic before the battle I divided 2 groups, one with 3 characters on the side where the fire bats arrive and my character where we open the lava valve. First I shot a arrow on Adamantine and then used Misty Step to go to the other side BUT aligned with the edge of the hammer forge so Adamantine stop exactly one leg on the hammer and the other leg on lava. To defeat him easily it's just to hit the lava valve to maintain him hot and the hammer lever.

The key thing is getting the lava on hitting him is great but he won’t take any hits without the lava being on cast haste on your fighter and just hit him with arrows is probably enough

I have NO IDEA how, but the first time I got here I killed him in like 3 turns without using the hammer, I even got an achievment for it (was playing a Wildheart Half-Orc Barbarian with the Doom Hammer, Shadowheart, Gale and Astarion as companions). But then, last night I got here again and was stuck, had to google for solutions...

If you go to the camp to swap characters after you put ore and mould, it resets it. You need to prepare misty step before you go down to boss area. only then it let you to click Lava Valve multiple times Same applies even if you fight the boss normally, it won't let you press valve second time = you won't kill the boss at all

Im stuck here because it will only allow me to press the valve once, gonna go back and try using the ore and mould with same character and return with an awnser if it worked.

​@@jockek46I have similar thing. I can use lava valve, but after using hammer lava stays anyway, so Grym is not charging and my hammer hits are for 0 hp

Does anyone know why it’s does that, again I can’t seems to interact with the lava after I hit it with the hammer once? So it’s just immune for the rest of the fight ?

@@TheDanWoolnough I think it's just bugged, when you put stuff in and platform goes down. If you go to the camp and come back, ore just vanishes from the catalyst = broken valve = immune boss

Update, it worked.

If you use wizard with Mage Hand. You can control both the Lever & Lava valve.

If you need time to kill the imps on tactician you can also banish him whike he is prone. Will likely need a scroll since banish is likelu too high of a level for most wizards at the level of this encounter. 😊

Yeah I’m pretty sure it’s a level 4 spell (unlocked at level 7). Unfortunately the scrolls are a rare item. Funny enough, I managed to loot one from a book shelf near the magma mephits

Now I just need an achievement specific guide. Like from start. What character do I make and how do I get weps and companions set up to do the no hammer achievement

May have just been my run but after he awakens, he stays put. You have to guide him with your characters through another turn but was largely still able to do everything like the video showed.

Im, beyond impressed how 🤔 environmental damage almost one taps him

Why can't I turn the lava valve after the first hammer blow? She is permanently inaccessible.

*i'm just playing the game rn so i have 0 knowledge beyond act 1* This gimmic figth was fun, I look forward to more later in the game
