Baldur's Gate 3 - Withers intervenes after the Dark Urge defies Bhaal! (Act 3)

Ойындар

I was extremely shocked when I came across this on my third playthrough. After I decided to defy Bhaal and he killed me, the screen goes dark and I was expecting the credits to roll at that point... To my surprise, good old Withers appears and resurrects me.
I decided to look up info on Withers and mostly just see complaints about bugs about him not appearing in camp, so decided to upload this video so others can see this interaction.
[EDIT] Since posted this, I believe Withers to be Jergal. His incredible power, his disdain towards the Dead Three which he ceded his power to, and him being a scribe. There are a couple game hints that talk about this including a loading screen tip and a Crumbled Journal passage that mentions "Jergal, the dead-keeper, the Ed of Everything [...] asked a simple question: `What is the worth of a single mortal's life?`" [/EDIT]
Game choices I made that MAY have (I don't know if they did have an impact or not) contributed to this is...
1) I refused to kill Isobel
2) I resisted the urge to kill my closest companion
3) I fought Orin in a 1 on 1 combat with no outside interference (Dark Urge VS Orin only).

    Withers is actually Jergal, the god of the End. He held the power of Bane, Bhaal and Myrkul. But he got bored of his position. When the Bhaal, Myrkul and Bane were still mortal adventurers, they seeked power. Jergal made a deal with them and divided up his powers and portfolio among the three of them, making them the god of Tyranny, Murder and Death respectively. He himself just became a scribe. That's an interesting idea. As a DM, I could definitely see that happening in a game given proper circumstances (such as the ones here and the setup would have to be made). However, I'd like to submit an idea that he is Jergal... He's a record keeper, he's a scribe, his utter distain towards the Dead Three. The most convincing of all clues though are these two: 1) Loading Screen Tip: "The Dead Three - Bhaal, Bane, and Myrkul - were all once mortal men, but ascended to godhood in a strange bargain with Jergal, the original god of death, murder, and strife." 2) Crumbled Journal found in the Gorion Mausoluem (in Graveyard in Lower City in Act 3) contains the following { I was still a supplicant when I came face to face with him: Masked in gold, his skin fine and worn as parchment. Jergal, the death-keeper, the End of Everything. I asked what he needed of me. He asked a simple question: "What is the worth of a single mortal's life?" I knew not how to respond, and said as such. He seemed nonplussed; neither disappointed nor pleased. I fell to my knees in respect for his awesome power. This garnered no reaction. There I stayed, trembling with an emotion I could not name. And when I stood again, the Finale Scribe was gone. } I only found this note a while after I posted this video. I swear, every playthrough I find things I never knew existed - it's amazing!

    To be fair, telling you that you are the murderer, one of those who were actually reponsible for current crisis is vastly different from him commenting on who you do or do not sleep with 🤣 First off, my char. would not even believe him... Imagine the situation: Some ghastly, dead dude just arrived at camp and started talking about you being one of the worst mortal pieces of shit there is 🤣 And even if MC believed Withers, then what? You cannot run away or u become Illithid. The only result this it could have is to push MC towards enslaving brain instead of killing it. Withers made the right choice, based on his understanding of the nature of the mortals. They would not believe and even if they did, there is literally nothing they could do about it. Worse in fact, some of the companions may even attempt to kill MC for getting them infected(if i remember correctly, originally it was DU char. that helped enslave that brain, not Orin).

    @SadeStVille6 ай бұрын

    While I do wish the companions had gotten a chance for reaction I think a lot of ppl's contempt for this scene comes from a misunderstanding of how DND deities and even quasi-deities work. During the time of troubles (about 130 yrs before game start) literally spread his spawn across faerun bc he knew he was gonna get slaughtered, skip to 1482 (10 yrs before game start) the prophecy of his resurrection is completed. BG3 takes a slight side step in which Durge is implicated to not be a bhaalspawn born from a mortal woman but simply a mortal portion of Bhaal. (2 paragraphs of rambling about the theme of Durge as an Eve allegory). BUT this also means that durge for all intents and purposes is effectively just a divine conduit which during the play through of the game gained it's own consciousness which you prove by resisting the dark urge. But since before that final moment of defiance other gods literally cannot intervene. Post the second sundering every god literally shut up as to not piss Ao off for a second time but also started to not interact with each other. To attempt to directly influence a God's chosen would've been asking for another era of upheaval which is what you're attempting to prevent (or cause) through the cult of the absolute. But once you're rejected by Bhaal, Withers (who is Jergel for all intents and purposes within the game) is actually able to step in and tie off at least one thread from his mistake with ascending the dead three.
